Cage (Hustler) Review

Review: This disc proclaims to be "The Greatest XXX Anime Ever Made". That always aggrevates me to begin with, especially in a genre such as adult erotica. Different people are gonna have a wide variety of how they think something is, and it is just ridiculous to claim such things. If this disc was good or excellent in all the non viewpoint catagories, I could atleast see why the hype, but frankly, this disc is plastered full of errors and issues. It has no place to claim it is the Greatest of anything in my view. I always try to find some positives in anything, and there are a few periods where the sex is decent, but there is just flaw after flaw here, that really atleast in my view keep it from ever being anywhere near acceptable.

The basic structure here, is that the disc is about 56 minutes long, and a 2 part movie with 28 minutes an episode. The story is often what really is aspiring in these Anime discs to me, many times other areas fall short, but usually the story atleast is somewhat interesting. This one though doesn't do much with story, basically there is this girl named Sakimi, and she gets ripped off by her boyfriend and ends up with some debt, so this freak boy gives her an offer to be in his stable of hookers, and the rest of the movie is her being a prostitute and being raped (but yet she is there on her own free will, sort of) and whinning like a mule about everything that happens to her. Now that in and of itself is not horrible as a porn plot, but it's all about the execution, and this one shot itself in the eyes.

The audio is Japanese, no problem there that is often the case in Anime due to it's origins, but that leaves all the story telling to us non japenese speaking people, up to the subtitles. Here we have more letdowns. Often in anime discs the translations are sometimes a little iffy, but here the text is just plain horrible. Phrases like "I am are ready, I you left" are things that occur often, and the grammar is just horrible throughout, it becomes almost a chore to ready and follow the story at times because of this, and it takes a lot of the heat there is in the sex scenes away because it just reads so poorly. All it would have taken was a little more work and proofreading to show the intent of the translation better. Poor effort.

As far as those sex scenes go, they are another tangle of webs. The animation and artwork is actually pretty decent, but the presentation is poor. There are around 8 or 9 sex scenes throughout the hour, but they are very short, and they ruin just about every one. If you have ever watched softcore porn, you will be well familiar with using shots where a guy's leg or just the placement of the camera blocks out the penetration shots or blowjob shots, well they do that same thing here, often. There are many times where they block out the blowjob by using the male's leg, or focus on the girls eyes an no lower as she sucks, or focusing on the girls drool filled mouth for half yes half a short sex scene to avoid showing her being screwed, that and they seemed to have an affection for showing old dirty light fixtures during the sex scenes, and focusing on them for long periods. Not even half the scenes show a cumshot, they just fade to white after a few seconds and sometimes show the aftermath, and most of the cumshots they do show are the fluid flying on a black screen method that other anime films use.

The real problem with this one, is that there is never a sense of anything actually happening, they just jump around from here to there, both the plot and sex segments just show a brief clip of something, then jump around to something else, and sometimes just completely unrelated, it's like a coma or drug trip kind of movie. For an example, the main Character Sakimi, is pissing and moaning about everything, so dingus teaches her a lesson by tieing her up and having her watch her friend and fellow captive prostitute Mana screw 3 guys. So after they jump around with why she is tied up and why the guys are there and if dingus can stay and watch, the guys go to work on Mana, and they block out most of what we see, and then jump to a side story of why Mana is at this place, (it involves being raped by her father and him committing suicide, but we see no sexual or killing action) right when it may have gotten good, and then they come back for literally 30 seconds at most and then white out instead of having the guys cum. It just becomes an exercise in frustration so many times. And then it abrubtly ends with no real build up to the finish, just a few quick occurances to get out of the plot, and boom it's done.

Final Thoughts and Recommendations:

I sat through this entire hour disc and even watched a few segments twice to try and get into the disc and story. However for every chance I gave it, there was more mistakes and issues that frankly had no logical reason for being there other than the fact that nobody cared enough to fix them. It's dissappointing, but it is what it is. Some really diehard anime fans may like this one, and maybe I'm missing something, but I have seen a bit of Anime before, and this one just has some problems that I think are unforgivable.
