The Better Sex line of
videos has sold millions of copies, thanks to the endless number of mail order
ads in the back of magazines. Way back when, I even ordered these tapes
from such an ad. The producer is the Sinclair
Intimacy Institute, although it's called "The Townsend Institute" in
the video. Personally, I find it too convenient that Adam & Eve, the
largest adult mail-order outfit in the world and this Institute are both located
in North Carolina (these video are, after all, featured prominently in A&E's
catalogs and distributed on DVD by Ultimate). But that's neither here nor
there...
Hosted by Drs. Roger Libby and Judy Seifer, sex educators, this volume follows a simple premise: a video introduction talking about a particular topic, followed by a narrated scenario featuring purported real-life couples (although two of those featured were definitely porn stars from the 80's and 90's -- Rick Savage and the girl's name eludes me). The other real-life demonstrators fit the role though: they're not beautiful people but overweight, balding, and older -- that makes the scenarios more believable to me. The topics featured in Making Sex Fun With Games & Toys are: sex toys, sex games, sex in the pool, sex in the office, sex outdoors, tie-up games, romantic sex, and fantasy. The video is definitely explicit (shows aroused genitalia, oral sex, and penetration) but is no more explicit than you'll find in the tamest adult videos available today. The "sex in the office" scene was done by the porn stars, so it's the most explicit (pretty much a full-length porn scene). The other "show & tell" segment featuring believably "regular" people are also hardcore, but much briefer (15-20 seconds). The audio and video quality matches the dated feeling you get when you watch this video -- it's circa 1992, and the quality is on par with a VHS tape. There are occasional glitches in the master tape that appear on the disc, and the audio is hollow. The DVD itself is rather bare-bones, but has some pleasant looking, if sterile, menus. Aside from the option for English or Spanish language tracks or English closed captioning, the only extras are several screens of "sexual health information," which is really just a bunch of justification for this sex ed video, not any really helpful info. Overall, I found Making Sex Fun With Games & Toys interesting as a curiosity, but it doesn't have any replay value for all but the most sexually inexperienced. Even though it's porn in the sheep's clothing of an "educational video," I doubt that you'll find enough naughty bits to get excited over. The advice is nothing more than you'd get from The Joy of Sex, and if you are looking for demonstration of techniques, there are much better examples in the adult video world. I got this as a freebie, and would suggest that you don't pick this up unless you can get it nearly free.
