The Little Details

Running Time: 89 min.

Production Date: 1991

Director: American Video Productions

Cast: Dr. Judith Seifer, Dr. Michael Kollar, Diedre Holland, Jon Dough, and plenty of other people

The Short Story

Initial Expectations: It’s been a long time since I’ve watched one of Sinclair’s DVDs, but I remember them being extremely basic. I’m not expecting a lot here, but every now and then Sinclair does surprise me.

Initial Reaction: It’s okay, but a little too basic to be called “advanced sexual techniques”.

Who Should Watch It : Anybody who feels clueless about sex

Who Should Avoid It: Anybody who has put so many notches in their bedpost that it’s starting to look like a toothpick

The Technical Stuff

Audio /Video Quality: The technical aspects are a little weak, and very similar to what I’d expect the VHS release to look and sound like. The audio is pretty clear, but nothing too outstanding. The video is much the same. It’s nicely lit, but it has some very minor grain and odd black bars at the top and bottom that make it look like somebody wasn’t quite sure what they were doing when they matted the video.

Music: The music is soft and very non-threatening. Although I’m sure this is great for some people, for others it might make it too soft and non-threatening and cause it to be boring instead.

Disc Complaints: There’s’ no time stamp to the feature, so if you stop the movie, either on purpose or by accident, you might end up starting it again at the beginning of the chapter. This is something that always annoyed me, but this is also an older DVD and I think Sinclair has moved past this problem.

Menus: The menus are extremely basic. The main menu is plain and almost sterile. The chapter menu lets you choose a chapter based on a still of each chapter and the subject of the chapter.

The Feature

Currently, we live in a sexually negative culture. Yes, it’s getting better in many ways, but it’s still hard to talk about sex in most places. The Better Sex Video series was made to help combat that. They’re developed as being a video textbook, and Sinclair advocates watching them with your partner so you can stop it and talk about different subjects as you go. In the second volume, they move on to a few slightly more advanced sexual practices under Dr. Judith Seifer and Dr. Martin Kollar. The doctors normally give a voice over as performers demonstrate what they talk to.

The first subject covered is masturbation. It’s covered for both men and women, and goes through some basic anatomy as well as a few simple techniques. They cover natural masturbation as well as using water and sex toys, and even talk about methods to strengthen your sexual muscles. After covering the basics they move on with mutual masturbation.

After masturbation, the doctors move on to cover a few different aspects of foreplay. They start with manual stimulation of your partner. One should not confuse this with Manuel stimulation of your partner, as one never knows when INS will show up at your door. They move on with fellatio, which Dr. Kollar lists as one of men’s favorite sexual activities. I have to agree, since my favorite sexual activities always involve women doing things to my cock. They talk about most everything from teasing to having the guy pop in the girl’s mouth. Next they cover cunnilingus, both from the girl being on her back and her being on top. They even cover the 69 briefly.

Of course, intercourse is also covered. They go through the positives and negatives of missionary, cowgirl, reverse cowgirl, and doggie. They also talk about using different rooms in the house to vary things a little, but never go so far as to suggest using the neighbor’s house when you know they’re gone for a few hours. Anal sex is also covered briefly. There isn’t a lot of information here, but some very important basics are covered nicely including the importance of taking it slow and anal foreplay. Finally, there’s information on safe sex.

Better Sex Video Series Vol. 2: Advanced Sexual Techniques is a decent educational movie. Yes, it’s very basic, but I think that’s a fairly good thing here. This movie is definitely aimed at people who are nervous about sex and afraid to talk about it, and as such it does a very nice job of covering the topics. Nothing is forced, and things are covered from both the male and female perspective very well. There’s even some nice little sex clips built in as demonstrations. Unfortunately, the biggest problem with the movie is also one of its biggest strengths. I think that the soft and basic feel to the movie will turn off many couples who pick up this title looking for something different to spice up their love life, and I just don’t think they will. Better Sex Video Series Vol. 2: Advanced Sexual Techniques will do a good job in its place, but I think that place might be a little too limiting.

The Extra Stuff

There’s several pages of Sexual Health Information covering the Sinclair Intimacy Institute, a definition of sexual health, the history of explicit sexual health films, testimonials, and key points from consumer, customer, and professional research. It’s all pretty dry, but makes a decent extra.

The Down -n- Dirty Sex Stuff

Themes: Educational, masturbation (both male and female), oral, straight, and anal

Raincoat Factor: Low

Condom Usage: Very few

The Bottom Line:

Currently, many DVDs from the Sinclair Intimacy Institude can be found online for between about $10 and $22 with several stores offering them for around $15. I’d recommend renting this one first. It’s a bit dry and basic and I think will lose quite a few people, but I’m sure that it will really help some others. The technical aspects are pretty basic, and there’s not much effort put into the extras.

Note to Sinclair: It would be nice to give a segment or two from a more advanced episode as an extra to help encourage couples to look more to the future.
