Apocalypse X is one of Digital Playground's epic adult movies. The film appears to be a take-off of the world of Mad Max, at least in style since this is not a direct “parody,” which is good since the industry has really shredded those to bits at this point. Digital Playground has put a lot of work into this movie and with the exception of one aspect, Apocalypse X is a great adult movie.

The plot has Razor (Stevie Shae) trying to survive in the post-apocalyptic world by stealing food and gas while trying to extract revenge against a motorcycle gang known as the Reapers and their lord Scar (Derrick Pierce) for killing her boyfriend John. The Reapers know Razor as “The Ghost” that they think is a demon from hell. Razor and Xena (Veronica Rodriguez), her companion, try to find a way for Razor to get her revenge while also trying to survive in the ruined world.

Apocalypse X is an absolutely beautiful movie. The movie was shot with a variety of cameras, including drones and cameras mounted on the vehicles, giving Apocalypse X a very cinematic look. Digital Playground should give their technical crew more credit as the cinematographer isn't identified in the credits and really should be. Apocalypse X offers some nice action sequences as well adding to the mainstream look of the movie.

The sets and locations the movie utilizes are perfect for creating the post-apocalyptic zombie and cannibal filled world that Razor lives in. Someone did a great job modifying cars to look like they are out of the pieced together and defend yourself to the death post-apocalyptic future. The costuming, which wouldn't work in any other movie, looks great here assembled out of just random themes thrown together. The make-up effects, especially Scar's scar, are also well done making for a nice visually looking movie.

The cast does an amazing job with their non-sex roles. Stevie Shae is wonderful in the lead and she does a great job of carrying the movie. Derrick Pierce does a stand-out job in his small, but important role. Mick Blue and Anikka Albrite were underused in the movie with their sex scene and then brief appearance later. Everyone does a great job with the sex scenes as well. The scenes give off good sexual heat and are well edited.

Credit needs to go to the horde of extras that are in the movie as well. Without them, the post-apocalyptic world would seem very empty and the gangs far less gang-like and various settlements far less settled. While it may seem silly to some for this reviewer to mention the background actors and actresses, their performances here actually help make the movie to be as good as it is and without them, the entire movie would have felt very empty.

The only real disappointment in Apocalypse X is the plot. The disappointment doesn't come from the plot being boring or uninteresting, as that isn't the case, it is just that the plot seems to have been trimmed down just to carry sex scene to sex scene. Director Jakodema has done such a good job with all of the other aspects of the movie, this reviewer wishes that the plot had been fully fleshed out.

Overall, Apocalypse X is a spectacular adult movie with great cinematography, excellent sex scenes, and great technical work. The only real failing is with the plot seemingly being an aside to everything else. While the plot ends up being disappointing, Apocalypse X is still well worth viewing for fans of the genre.

Digital Playground has done a great job with their Blu-ray and DVD combination package for Apocalypse X. The combo pack consists of one Blu-ray and one DVD, both containing the movie and the same extras. Apocalypse X was shot digitally in high definition and is presented in 1080p on the Blu-ray and 480p on the DVD. The image presented on the Blu-ray looks beautiful with a nice, clean, crisp, and clear image with beautiful color rendering. The image contains nice detail and all-around looks great. The DVD looks nice too, just not with as sharp a detail obviously.

Apocalypse X is presented on both discs with an English Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround audio track. The audio sounds good and a very full sounding audio presentation. There are some issues with an uneven audio presentation and volume fluctuation. The dialog is clear and easy to understand throughout the entire movie. The only issue with the audio is that the track on the Blu-ray isn't a lossless audio track.

Digital Playground has only included a couple of extras on the release, which seems lacking since this is one of their blockbuster releases. There is a nine minute behind the scenes featurette and a photo gallery included on the release.

Apocalypse X is one of Digital Playground's epic adult movies that a lot of care, thought, and money went into creating. Apocalypse X is visually appealing and the cast does a great job with their characters and with their sex scenes. The director, Jakodema, has done a great job of creating a post-apocalyptic world for the movie. The only shortcoming is the plot seems too rushed through. Despite this, Apocalypse X is still an excellent adult movie. Digital Playground has done a great job with their release with decent audio and beautiful video but has skimped on the extras.
