Anal Expedition hits the ground running with this literally hard-hitting affair featuring the inestimable anal queen Sandra and the ever-wilder Mandy ("No limits," she says, during the Behind the Scenes footage). Obviously Manuel saw this and chose Julie to lead us into the scene but that rather disappears once the action starts and only returns with the gleam in her eye in the closing seconds. There's a nice, but frustrating, clip, of some in-between-takes sex in the Behind the Scenes that shows what I'd really like to see from her. But then I am only watching this from afar, and perhaps I am hoping for something that's never really going to happen, as the next scene might well tend to suggest.

Lucy Lee
The thing is that I've been wondering what some of these girls, Lucy in particular, are willing to give to the camera. Can I expect them to be wildly excited about sex with every stranger who arrives proffering cash? In a nutshell, I'm just dying to see Lucy really sparkle rather than adopting a "game face" as she seems to do too readily, for whatever reasons. And so, despite Manuel's great efforts, Lucy dutifully completes the physical demands but seems emotionally reserved. Don't get me wrong; Lucy is perfectly amiable as well as being incredibly beautiful and desirable as Manuel tells us in his funny intro where he contrasts himself with the "lucky bastards" he used to watch fucking the beautiful girls. So what to make of Anal Expedition? It's not perfect but it is pretty damn good. On one level, I consider it unfair to mark it down just because it doesn't meet one or two personal expectations. I'd still like to see more personality, more chemistry and more lingering on the charms of these fine, fine women. However, that's a personal thing. The truth is that Manuel brings a lot of passion and a little creativity to the sex and I really did enjoy the movie, which is thankfully more varied than one might expect.

There are some moderately imaginative situations and a wealth of strong, physical sex but, for me, the key factor is that for the most part Manuel does obtain plenty of commitment from his cast, a fine cast at that, and no more so than Mandy and Sandra in that sizzling opening scene. We can see where Manuel is coming from with this sort of action - Rocco and Christoph gave him a great start in this business and he's grabbing the chance with both hands. Manuel isn't a master of his craft yet - odd moments of questionable direction or editing and the tricky act of balancing the multi-performer scenes are minor flaws - but he's got good ideas and his work compares favourably with his mentors at a similar stage of development.

DVD Comments
The picture quality is good without being of the highest standard. I felt the colour was a little weak, maybe a touch over-compressed, but functional and always watchable. The sound is good with little to complain about. The pick of the DVD extras bunch are the behind the scenes, which, in combination with a bonus tease sequence, further develop the entrancing charm of these fantastic girls. I could watch this stuff for hours! Manuel keeps saying how he loves his job and how he knows we hate him - his self-effacing humour is an admirable quality.
