I suppose it had to come to this, as porn is boiled down to its basic components and the supposedly unnecessary froth is removed. The premise of A.N.A.L. is simple: each scene goes straight to anal sex. It's not a revolutionary concept, it's not even an original idea and for my taste I have to even question if it's a desirable one. However, Bryan Xin does have a desirable cast on board, so let's press on… Ashley Blue Petite, small busted brunette sex bomb Ashley wiggles out of a white latex dress. Part of me says this is a fun idea, part of me thinks it a little bit ridiculous, and I wonder if it's 100% successful in execution. Whatever, it does produce some rude results. It's almost a relief to get back to some straightforward, featureless fucking, as Cheyne takes each girl doggy style. Crystal winces in anticipation of his come load - she's probably relieved that most goes on Nomi's ass. I think Crystal could be quite cute, but this is hardly the scene to confirm it with the emphasis all on their little party piece. Choo choo! Patricia Ah, the homogenisation of the porn star image continues apace, with it becoming daily more difficult to characterise the all-natural European talent as such. Angelika Angelika is an attractive, well-built blonde whose lively performance was the best thing about the otherwise limp Party of Sex. From missionary, Joe comes on her anus. On one level this works - it's straightforward, strong sex. But on another, it's a let down. Maybe I am imagining it, but doesn't that look in Angelika's eye suggest something more? Julie Night Blonde Julie is not one of these leggy international glamour girls. She does have a willingness to do very rude things, which, let's be honest, is why she gets gigs like this, and of course she has a phat little ass, into which she inserts some interestingly shaped sex toys. There's a pink, liquid-filled one, and a knobbly, curved glass one. In they go, both at once, and four fingers join them too. All this is shown in glorious close-up. Again, plenty of energy is expended in the performance of these acts, but I find myself in severe danger of trotting out that line about perspiration & inspiration for the nth time in recent reviews…let's just say it's strong stuff but it's the stuff of my dreams… Overall A.N.A.L. is probably great if you just want to beat your meat to pretty girls who don't say a whole lot while they get stuffed in the ass. On that level, it works a treat. It's fractionally harder than Xin's previous releases and rigidly sticks to its all-anal formula. So if that's all that matters, what are you waiting for? However, I do have a small axe to grind. Movies like this seem to be the inevitable result of many trends in contemporary porn. Instead of weighing up what's sexy or special about individual girls, situations or concepts, it has a theme that is imposed on the sex regardless. This theme is designed to appeal to viewers who sit there and FFWD the vaginal sex to get to the anal action. I could blame them for having narrow interests, but porn itself is at fault for that because so much of it is so formulaic. We all know that most times the scene will go through the same motions, in the same order - we can buzz through the "vaginal part" and get to the "anal part" because we know most sex scenes are made in this way and that they will, likely as not, have the same acts in the same order. That's where porn like this comes in. Instead of ripping up the rulebook, A.N.A.L. is simply tearing out the unwanted pages while still following the formula. It's probably completely unfair of me to single this movie out because this is really just par for the course. It's absolutely the exception to see something surprising, something passionate and sexy and different. It's unfair of me to expect to see that in this movie, which is totally clear in its intentions, but I don't think it's unfair of me to urge Bryan Xin and his fellow directors to consider making movies that are really about what they like, personally, and not a reaction to other porn, and certainly not just about what the market demands. Maybe I've misjudged it; maybe this is what Bryan Xin really likes, in which case I'll just have to accept that he's not likely to make the kind of movies that I want to see. DVD Comments The picture quality is pretty fine, bright, sharp and colourful. The sound is clear. DVSX seem to be one of these companies who pull these basic technical qualities off as a matter of course, while others still find it hard. The disc has a neat little selection of extras: lots of girl-in-shower action plus a pre-scene sex session between Joel and Ashley (staged or real, this has some of the kind spontaneity and excitement missing in the feature) in the behind the scenes clip, plus a solo masturbation scene for each girl, a photo gallery, trailers and a cumshot recap. |
