The Short Story

Initial Expectations: My luck with anime has been very hit or miss. Hustler has shown a lot of class with their DVDs, so I have a fair amount of hope here.

Initial Reaction: It’s one of the most enjoyable anime features I’ve seen.

The Technical Stuff

Audio /Video Quality: The technical aspects are okay. The audio is presented entirely in Japanese without any English dubbing. It’s pretty clear, and you have the option of whether or not you want English subtitles. The subtitles are pretty good, but often have odd breaks that sometimes break up words. The video is a bit weak. Think Pokemon with a bit of softness and blurriness to the animation. It’s brightly colored, but there were plenty of times when it seemed like it might have been animated with beer goggles.

Music: The music is nicely done. It rests very well in the background and has a playful feel that works great for the movie.

Menus: The menus are pretty good. The main menu has some very nice animation leading to it that gives a good first impression. The chapter menu lets you choose a scene by a small clip of each scene and a scene number. It also breaks things down into two episodes.

The Feature

Nikita Shindou lives in a bit of a fantasy world. He dreams of making out with girls in the anime movies he’s seen, but has never been with a real girl himself. That changes when he decides to join the trivia club. There he meets a girl who decides to give him a “lesson”. The club decides he should go to the comic convention, but as soon as things start happening with the club he meets the girl of his dreams. As usual, girl trouble ensues.

Episode 1 Scene 1 - Tita and Nikita Shindou

Nikita’s first fantasy has him being visited by Tita, from Castle in the Sky. They kiss by his computer before he takes her to the bed to play with her tits and her pussy. Episode 1 Scene 2 - Tamaye Akiyoshi and Nikita Shindou

Since it’s looking like it’s going to be a bit and Nikita looks nervous about being with a woman, Tamaye decides to give him a lesson. Episode 1 Scene 3 - Tetsuko Misaki and Nikita Shindou

Episode 2 Scene 1 - Hatoko and Nikita Shindou

When Nikita stops by to see Hatoko, he thinks she’s passed out on the floor. When he goes over to check on her, he finds out that she was faking it. She jumps on him and kisses him before they have a quick talk. Afterwards, she makes sure that Nikita knows her feelings for him by sucking his cock. There’s a feeling of chemistry despite it being an animated feature, and I had a smile on my face throughout almost the entire scene. This is a great scene, and my favorite in the first two episodes.

Episode 2 Scene 2 - Mei and Nikita Shindou

Nikita comes home realizing that his adopted sister is in love with him. He kisses her before exploring her body. He starts out playing with and kissing her tits before moving down to work on her pussy. He makes her squirt before letting her titty fuck his cock. This is another nicely done scene. Yes, it’s a subject that’s going to lose a lot of people, but I don’t think I’ve seen anybody else handle it as nicely as its handled here. There’s a passion and caring here that makes the scene work, and it comes off with quite a bit of tenderness as well. This is a pretty hot scene.

Episode 2 Scene 3 - Ren Aoi and Nikita Shindou

After sleeping with Ren, Nikita gets it on with her in the morning. Nikita gives her pussy a quick lick before they start fucking. This is yet another nicely done scene. It’s much shorter than the other scenes, which seems weird because this is a “dream girl” scene that the two episodes felt like they were moving towards. It makes the scene feel much less important than it should, and the scene comes across as the weakest scene in the two episodes.

Akiba Girls is a fun anime feature. I’ve watched a fair amount of anime and hentai, and barely any of it has been as enjoyable as this. While most of what I’ve scene has concentrated on darker, non-consensual sex, Akiba Girls focuses on fun and playful sex. There’s costumes, misunderstood situations, and fantasies to bring about the sex rather than trickery and drugs. Yes, there is a bit of alcohol and incest (with adopted rather than blood relatives) involved, but I think some of this is a cultural thing. There are several things discussed that are foreign to me (pun intended) that I was curious about, but there’s no explanation anywhere. That cultural gap and curiosity is the biggest weakness in Akiba Girls, and thankfully it doesn’t interfere too much. Akiba Girls strives to be sexy and fun, and that’s just what it ended up being. It’s not perfect, but it has enough spirit that it was easy for me to look past the flaws.

The Bottom Line:

Currently, Hustler’s anime DVDs can be found online for between about $19 and $29 with very few stores offering them near the low end. At that price, I’d rent it first. I really enjoyed the movie, but there’s no extras and the technical aspects are weak. For that price tag on this overall package, I think this one’s worth a rental first to see if you think it’s really worth that much.

Note to Hustler: This disc really needed a couple extras. At the very least, a few screens of notes to explain some of the cultural things (such as the games Nikita plays, what Akiba is, and other little things that Westerners might not understand) would make a great extra. I think you’d also find a bigger audience if you had an English language track here rather than just the Japanese track and subtitles. Even without these things, thanks for bringing out an animated release that doesn’t make me fight my gag reflex.
