  I think we're all fooling ourselves if we think that piracy is some kind of new invention, that started with the internet and the mp3. It's been happening since long before the dual cassette deck of the 80's (mixed tape anyone?), and moved into movies with the advent of the VCR - which consequently, is the invention that more or less created the 'industry' of porn.   I'm on board with most of this, especially the post by John Lyons. Where 'Porn Valley' went wrong, is the Studio's and Distributor's have been more or less putting out the same stuff for the last 10 years, to the point that it's all become interchangeable and frankly, disposable. Coming from someone who's spent most of her career jumping up and down and waving my arms to get the attention of the 'mainstream' porn engine running wild out in 'The Valley', I can tell you that the industry did it to themselves.   Great thread! If a Director is shooting in HD, or even Widescreen, there's absolutely no excuse for a Letterboxed Transfer. That's either lazyness or incompetence in post. As I understand Tricia's explanation, this falls squarely on the Director's shoulders at Evil Angel, and to their credit, it always should. The thing I've always loved and admired about Evil Angel is the fact that they bend over backwards to present the Director's vision exactly as the Director wants it presented, and while aspect ratio is maybe a weird thing to discuss, if porn fans weren't inherently techno savvy, we'd all still be watching our smut on VHS tape. To the defense of the Director's, how aspect ratio is presented on the DVD is very much a post production ...

  Whenever a startup asks for my opinion on how to get into the ndustry, my answer is always the same: Own and Control your own product. Forget DVD. Put your start up money into a good VOD/download website, and make sure that whatever you are selling is different than the rest and only available through you. Well said LadyB, and I got the same advice almost 8 years ago when DVD was in it's hay day.
