  An SSD that hosts the search index died in the server. I've restored the Elastic Search service from a backup. It's running a full reindexing now to ensure it's all up to date.

  <link> Keep in mind that the new search has the ability to specify a starting/ending year. This is different than the old mechanism. With the new search you can also filter on more than one forum, like in the example link above.

  The search page was completely restructured and it is now limited to 2000 matching posts. The old way was incredibly taxing on the server when bots were hammering the site making the site unresponsive or in extreme cases taking it offline. I do see that I made a significant oversight though in the new search page. A search term is required, not just a member name. I'll work on fixing that now.

  I added the ability to sort the search results by date in addition to relevance ranking. Relevance was not very useful when searching performer names. <image>

  I have updated the search index to now include a placeholder in posts that contain images. The placeholder is [img] This makes it possible to search for posts containing images by including 'img' as a search term when doing an 'all words' type of search. Check it out: <link>

  BTW, the new search page allows for grouping words like <link> and <link> . If you're not interested in anal posts you can negate a term like <link> The old search was not capable of these types of features. Edited by - Drew Black on 8/13/2026 1:28:57 PM

  BTW, there's now a means of searching within topics using the new search. It's at the top right of every forum topic. Could be handy for the topics that span hundreds of pages. <image>

  To provide a little perspective, a normal server load on ADT is between 25 and 50 page requests per second for www.adt +forum.adt. When the distributed bot networks show up that easily jumps to 500+. The key word is "distributed". They make their requests from hundreds of different IP addresses in quick succession so typical rate limiting efforts fail. These requests are often spread across several different ISPs as well. Mitigation is difficult because the abuse isn't restricted to a single IP or group of IP addresses. Mitigation needs to be based on behavior; detecting request patterns that are not like a typical user. It's not easy. The best bot networks emulate real users fairly well.

  While I'm not affiliated with IAFD I know the people that run it and they are up against the same bot/automated traffic problems that I've been fighting for the past 8 months. Automated traffic accounts for more than 50% of all internet traffic these days. But it's much worse when the site is a resource or database. It's unfortunately too easy for people to setup content scrapers behind distributed residential proxy networks and overwhelm a site's resources. With the prevalence of AI agents someone with zero programming or internet skills can easily launch a custom content scraper. The impact is especially troublesome for sites that happen to use older webserver tech like ADT and IAFD. I can't say for sure that's what's happening at IAFD ...

  You're welcome. For anyone else that might lose access to an account: if you write to me from a throwaway email account and can't prove to me that you are the owner of an inactive forum account I'm not going to give you access. That's the breaks. You think I should just turn over access to any account because you asked for it? I responded after your barrage of six emails in about 10 minutes around 5:30 am local time. And you told me never mind because you created a new account. But you can fuck off now.

  Thanks for letting me know. You should be able to bypass the age verification by logging in if you have previously completed the AV process. I'll dig into this.

  And this is a more typical swarm pattern from yesterday evening around 7:30pm. This is a little over 10 mins of data. Almost 3k requests per minute making their way to the server spread out over a few IP addresses. These requests were mostly to price search pages. No real user makes 400+ page requests in a 10 minute period <image>

  Some of it is random, some of it is deliberately trying to extract data from the site. To give you an idea, here's a deliberate one from last night. Just one Charter Communications IP address making 35k requests. Roughly 1500 requests every 5 mins. Whoever is operating this bot network will often send a swarm of 5 to 10 scarpers at a time making requests like this. The peaks are around 6k requests/minute making it through the defenses to the servers that host the site. <image>

  For the moment I switched from blocking to managed challenges. I have a new bot blocking system in the works. They have really gotten out of control. Appears there are lots of people renting their home cable and fiber connections to anonymous proxy services. I need to get a little more surgical with the blocking logic. To put things in perspective a handful of bots from Comcast can generate 6k page requests per minute with rotating IP addresses. They change IP addresses after 5 requests. If I block an IP address they show up almost immediately afterwards with a different IP. Thus far the only way to prevent this stuff has to been to block <link> . This has the very unfortunate side effect of blocking legitimate traffic. But it's a tradeo...

  If you're on Comcast we've been getting hammered by bots on Comcast residential proxy IP addresses. I have systems that automatically block IP ranges temporarily but if the range gets blocked more than 10 times it becomes permanent.
