For his first movie, Italian stud turned director Denis Marti has assembled

a fraction more panache that one might expect from a first timer. I suspect
my particular enjoyment of it was that it met closely with my particular
needs at the time of viewing but it's to be admired for its simplicity
and concentration on good, healthy sex with a total absence of malice.
The real thing that inspires me is the potential that Denis Marti has.
Through my colleague Speelie I've heard that Denis wishes to press on
with making more passionate, more individual movies and that's what I
am really hopeful about. Holmes and Ferrara have presented limited evidence
on this too, doing things with even just a little variety and imagination
and getting away from porn based solely around sex acts or racial/numeric/sexual
combinations and the presumed demands of the market. Young & Wild is littered
with the kind of little details that suggest this guy is maybe thinking
the same way as I do about porn and might just have a good idea or two
requiring further development.
As Speelie has observed in his review of Young & Wild 2, Denis seems
to have a good idea about what's sexy. The kind of things I mean? To show
the girls and the guys getting off, having a good time, really getting
into it and to take the time and make the effort to produce these kinds
of reactions. To reflect the natural sexiness of the female stars. To
use neat set-ups with a little touch of humour and style (just a touch)
to give the sex some sort of context outwith the reality of porn, while
negotiating the problems of language and inability to act! And most importantly
to show passionate sex that is imbued with personal spirit from director
and performers and isn't just another retread of the same old stuff. He
doesn't show all these qualities consistently enough for my liking in
this movie, but the signals are there in the best scenes, with the wonderful
Jennifer and Aleksandra.
So, I won't pretend Young & Wild is a serious departure from the formula,
because it's not - it's more like a few steps in the right direction.
I think my imagination steps in to fill the gaps from time to time! More
personality and more passion in general would not go amiss. I do quite
like the style of the movie, but on the other hand it seems slightly stark
and utilitarian and slightly at odds with the idea of passionate action.
A looser feel might seem more fitting but I would still prefer Denis to
stick to his own ideas. One simple specific example of what would make
this movie better for me is to actually show the moment of penetration
more often - it did surprise me given the general attention to detail
that they mostly cut from one position to another with sex already in
progress. Also, I can imagine scenes like Kirsty's or Daytona's may entertain
some viewers while others may watch these and wonder what the hell I'm
babbling about as they go through the usual moves. The action does sag
a little in these scenes in particular and when it does it feels like
a very ordinary movie. So, while I personally enjoyed Young & Wild and
especially its beautiful girls, I recognise it's not a world-beater in
itself, but I liked its style and sincerely hope it's a signpost on the
road to even better things to come from Denis Marti.
DVD Comments
Having at long last dumped the double-sided disc format, Digital Sin present
Young & Wild on a single sided disc with no trailers and just a small
selection of extras - pride of place goes to a very pleasant 50-odd minutes
of tease and masturbation footage, with Aleksandra, Kirsty, Jennifer and
Daytona and ending with a light "lesbian" show from Carol and Isabel.
There's a photo gallery too. That's about yer lot. The picture quality
on the feature is very good indeed, sound is fine and the original music
is quite effectively used.
