The Technical Stuff

Audio /Video Quality: The technical aspects are very hit or miss. The biggest problems are with the audio. The indoor segments are pretty well done, but there are a few background noises and a couple minor balance problems. It gets much worse for the outdoor segments, which are heavily plagued with background noises and with balance problems. Thankfully the video is much better. It has a slight grain, which is consistent enough that I think it’s deliberate and is nicely lit. There’s a bit of camera motion, but it never interfered with the action for me.

False Advertising: The back cover claims there’s a behind the scenes featurette on the DVD, but I couldn’t find it anywhere. I’m deducting a half point from the overall score because of this.

Menus: As usual with Smash, the menus are nicely done. The main menu has an artistic look that blends a bit of the movie. The chapter menu lets you choose a scene based on a small clip of each scene and the name of the girl in each scene. After you choose a girl, you get to choose where in the scene you want to go. Unfortunately, the names don’t always match the scenes, as Tiffany and Mary Ann are switched here as well as Kirsten and Autumn.

The Feature

Whale tails. You know you’ve seen them, and you didn’t even have to go to the beach to see them. All you had to do was go to the mall, or just down the street. I’ll admit right off that I’m probably not the group of people Smash is thinking of with Whale Tail. To start off with, I cringe at the thought of girls in low rider jeans because I’m not sure five percent of the ones I’ve seen in them make them look good. When I see a thong sticking out above them, the first word to come to mind is “trash” and I immediately start laughing at them. That said, with Smash and Mike Metropolis’s record lately I couldn’t help but have some hope here because I knew they stood a good chance of changing my mind on it. Did they? No, not really, but they packed enough well done sex in the movie and put in enough nice general teases that I didn’t mind seeing them either. Sunny Lane and Autumn Bliss easily take the prize here, but the other girls do a very nice job as well. Tiffany Rayne and Mary Ann also stand out in the movie for me, and they each turn out a fantastic first time anal scene. Outside of not being into the theme of the movie, the other problem for me was the audio. I know that I normally leave that subject for the technical portion of the review, but here it interferes enough that it turned me off a bit before the scenes could really go anywhere. Whale Tail isn’t quite my thing, but there’s enough of it that’s done well enough that ti almost made me wish I were into them.

Currently, many Smash DVDs can be found online for between $14 and $24 with most stores offering them in the $20 range. If you’re a fan of whale tails, this one’s well worth the money. There’s some nice teases and the sex is nicely done. The technical aspects are a bit weak, and surprisingly there’s virtually no effort put into the extras. This is a pretty basic DVD with a pretty good movie.

Note to Smash Pictures: Please work on your audio. It’s easily been the biggest problem with the last two releases I’ve watched from you and something that I know turns a lot of people off.
