Initial Thoughts
Rob Rotten is from the school of "edgy" and "controversial" porn which features punks and other grungy folks screwing each other for hours. His movies feature catchy titles and MTV style videograohy. The question is: will they work as movies?
The Film
The movie opens with a group of five 20 somethings (they're probably supposed to be teenagers but I'm not sure) in a van. They are lost. A girl asks to get out to pee and does so just long enough for two of the other van passengers to screw. Once she's back, the group encounter a chubby punk who seems a bit crazy but says he can help them get where they're going. They oblige, but he soon pulls out a knife and stabs the couple who had just finished fucking. The others run off.
There's nothing surprising or even remotely original here until the last 10 minutes of the movie when we are given an extremely predictable "surprise" ending. As in Hooper's 1974 classic, the van survivors end up at a creepy house full of cannibals. Here though, the house looks more like a luxury vacation home, filled with expensive furniture and art, and the cannibals all happen to be tattoo and piercing covered punks, most of whom also have plugs or septums.
The punk angle could have made for an interesting subplot; i.e. why do all of these cannibals look like they fell of a truck going to a Metalica concert, c. 2000, but director Rob Rotten (who gets in on the action as well) seems to be more than happy leaving that aspect of the movie untouched. Otherwise, what we have is a rather tedious (even though I fast forwarded over 75% of the sex, the movie still felt like it was 3 hours) and sometimes violent remake of Tobe Hooper's horror classic with nothing new brought to the pot.
The set design is dull, the photography is nothing special and the lighting is just plain bad. There's next to no music in the movie, which makes the lengthy sex scenes even more sleep educing and even the surprise ending can be spotted a mile away. The only redeeming qualities this movie has are its frequent gore (quite a rarity in modern hardcore) and Hershel Savage's good performance at the very end of the movie.
A/V Quality
The movie is presented in widescreen at 1.85:1 and is enhanced for widescreen TVs. The colors, as bad as they might be, were intended to be that way. The sound is poorly mixed, but again, that's not the fault of the DVD.
The Extras
A commentary track is included. It doesn't realy tell us anything interesting. A LONG making of doc is also included. It was more fun to watch than the movie itself.
Cuts Warning
I can safely say that thid DVD is uncut.
Who Should See It?
If you want some OK gore sprinkled in between standard looking and very long sex scenes, then this might be the movie for you. Rent it first to be sure though.
Who Should Skip It?
Anyone interested in a movie which is clever, original, well made, or one which has a decent story.
Final Thoughts
Another XXX horror disappointment. I'm not giving up yet but with the way things are going, I might just have to seen.
