Sweet Cakes is a vignette style feature film from director Howard Ziehm, who also wrote the story for the vignettes, and the dialog for the film was written by Wes Craven, prior to becoming the horror film maestro he was most known for. The story in the film is that Jennifer Fox (Jennifer Welles), of Fun Girl Magazine, is interviewing John Dupree (Ras Kean), the publisher and photographer of Terrace Girl Magazine. During the interview, the two discuss various photo shoots that John has done for Terrace Girl Magazine.

The photoshoots are the vignette stories that make up the bulk of the film. The first vignette has Civil War soldier Johnny (John Galt) returning from the war and making love with his southern belle Mary Lou (Serena) and their maid Sunflower (Desiree West). The second vignette has Billy (Michael Ronds) talking with the high school slut Connie (Jean Dalton) about their sex education class and getting a lesson he didn't expect. The third vignette has Eddie (Ken Scudder) picking up Star (Linda Wong) in a bar and bringing her back for a bondage session. The final vignette features lesbian twins Debbie and Dawn (Brooke and Taylor Young) who enjoy the company of each other a little more than most twins do.

Using the interview as the backdrop for the film works rather well since it allows for all sorts of different themes within the vignettes without them feeling odd or out of place, which is so often an issue with vignette-style feature films. The vignettes themselves are well done as well. Each one has its own story to it, some more complex than others, so Sweet Cakes has more to the vignettes than just sex.

The cast does a great job with their roles, both in the sexual scenes and the non-sexual scenes. The cast stays in character throughout the sex scenes, which adds to the mood that each sex scene sets up. Each sex scene has its own sexual theme as well. The Civil War soldier scene is a three-way, the high school slut scene is barely legal, the bar scene is bondage, and the lesbian twin scene — well this shouldn't have to be explained — with the finale being the boy/girl scene.

The locations used for the film and the sets are exceptional. Each one adding to the mood that each vignette sets up. Each set and location look right for the part. Sweet Cakes is well shot and edited together nicely. Overall, Sweet Cakes is a fun and erotic adult film that is well worth viewing if you are a fan of the genre.

The edition of Sweet Cakes screened is the streaming and download version available from AEBN. Fuck Cuts Productions has done a disappointing job with their streaming and download edition of Sweet Cakes. Sweet Cakes was shot on film and it is likely that Fuck Cuts Productions has used a good quality video source for their master. Sweet Cakes is presented in the Academy aspect ratio of 1.33:1 in 480p. If they have utilized a film master then they did a low-quality scan of the film. Overall, the image looks good except it seems to have a lack of definition, which is more noticeable in some scenes than others. The colors in the film look nice and there are the expected artifacts and print damage present. The film can look overly dark at some points and sometimes blacks look gray in the image.

Sweet Cakes is presented with an English monaural audio track. The audio has a lot of issues which detracts heavily from the viewing experience. There is a pronounced and loud hiss throughout the entire film and there is pronounced distortion in the audio that is also present throughout the entire film. The dialog in the film is clear and can be understood at all times throughout the film but the sound is just plain ugly.

Fuck Cuts Productions hasn't included any extras with their streaming and download version of Sweet Cakes.

Sweet Cakes is an extremely well-done and erotic vignette style feature film from director and co-writer Howard Ziehm and co-writer, and later-to-be horror film icon, Wes Craven. None of the vignettes are connected, other than through a loose narrative, but each vignette contains more than just the sex scene. Sweet Cakes is well worth watching for fans of the genre. Fuck Cuts Productions has done a poor job with their streaming and download release of Sweet Cakes. The video has lower than expected definition and the audio is just plain horrible.
