It helps that the cast is headed by Randy Spears, who may be the best actor working in porn today. His marriage, once so exciting, is on the rocks and his wife (Syndee Steele) has marginalized his very existence. All she wants is an excuse to leave him for her well-heeled lover. Enter April Flowers, a young temptress on a mission to seduce him and thereby provide the very excuse his wife needs.
Put like that it all sounds rather pitiless, but the movie avoids this too-common pitfall of narrative porn by giving its characters good hearts; the only true scoundrel in the film is played by Brad Armstrong as Syndee’s lover, and director Jonathan Morgan is clever enough to give him a couple of other girls to play with once his true nature has been revealed. We don’t have to watch Syndee humiliated in bed, and we can watch a good threeway without any accompanying bad vibes.
This scene is the last in a triptych of threesomes. The movie begins with one, a remembered encounter from the glory days of Randy’s marriage. It’s a roomy tub scene with Randy, Syndee, and Cherie, choreographed to keep everyone involved. The middle threesome involves Steve Hatcher, Kylie Ireland, and Cindy. Cindy, a new talent with only four films to her credit, is Grade-A gorgeous, a delight to watch whether she’s riding Steve in reverse cowgirl fashion or eating Kylie while taking it from Steve doggy-style.
Remarkably, Morgan doesn’t stray too far from the plot to give us Cindy’s scene, which includes none of the principals. Even more remarkably, he doesn’t push his luck. Not much, anyway. The following scene is a lesbian tryst with Kylie and April, who witnessed the threeway and got turned on. It doesn’t exactly advance the plot, but it shows us that April isn’t tied to Randy, which is consistent with her attitude at the end of the film.
And it provides another bit of variety in a film that uses a rotating wheel of sexual partnerships to stay fresh and exciting throughout. The other three scenes pair up Syndee and Brad, Randy and April, and finally Randy and Syndee. And there isn’t a one of them that isn’t a pleasure to watch.
For the record, the sex includes all the usual positions, several facials, and one instance of anal activity. I have to wonder whether Morgan has begun to figure out that sex itself can be meaningful. Is it merely a coincidence that Syndee gets in the ass from Brad Armstrong, to whom she’s nothing more than a “sport fuck,” or that she’s the recipient of the film’s only significant guy-to-girl cunnilingus from the tongue of the man who truly loves her? Probably. In all likelihood it’s just the difference in two men’s sexual styles.
Well, I don’t want to be greedy. “Something So Right” is on par with the best story films of the 80s and 90s, and that’s saying something. It’s well-acted, well written, and well-oiled—leave the lube in the drawer for this one.
