The Short Story

Initial Expectations: Robby D. has been doing well with the lighter feature style. With this cast and Digital Playground's normal track record I'm going into this one with a bit of hope.

Initial Reaction: It's far better than I expected with Kayden and Manuel's scene being worth the price of admission just by itself.

Who Should Watch It : Anybody wanting a well made couples feature with a few little twists and a bit of depth

Who Should Avoid It: Anybody wanting group, lesbian, or a bunch of nastier sex

The Technical Stuff

Audio /Video Quality: The technical aspects are very nicely done. The audio is clear and well balanced and I didn't notice any background noises. The video is presented in anamorphic widescreen and also looks quite nice. There's a little play with the lighting and some slightly washed out footage in the style that Digital Playground often uses, and it works well here to make the movie seem a little more artistic, and for some reason, glamorous.

Music: The music is very well done. It has a nice balance with the audio during the non-sex portions, and helps to give the movie a lot more depth and class. It then disappears for the sex.

Menus: The main menu nicely blends the boxcover with a bit of action from the movie for a nice first impression. The chapter menu nicely lets you choose a scene based on a chapter number (which doesn't correspond to the chapter numbers in the movie), a clip from the chapter, and the name of the girl in her first chapter of each scene.

The Feature

Manuel's life appears to be stuck in a rut. He spends the day surfing the web for hidden porn at Net Nanny, and while most of the office has strong sex lives and a little fun on the side he stays completely faithful to his stuffy wife Kayden and refuses to cheat on her even though she barely even puts out. I'll admit to falling into the “contract girl” stereotype and thinking of Digital Playground as a softer studio, but this scene shows just how much potential they have. There's nothing beyond a little anal play here with the sex getting just slightly on the rough side without going to a point that should make most couples at all nervous. In fact, the level of roughness seems just about right for what's happening between Kayden and Manuel. That said, this scene ranks up there with some of the best I've seen from Manuel with Kayden taking him on beautifully and looking like she's completely into every thrust, slap, or passionate kiss he gives her. This is one of the best scenes I've watched in a very long time, and is going to be hard to beat as well.

He seems to suck every bit of sexuality out that she can put out, and keeps the scene moving with each of them continuing to pull more out of each other. This is a great scene to close the movie.

The Smiths is a surprisingly great little adult feature. I know I shouldn't be too surprised with how many quality features Robby D. has put out in the past, but most of them seem to be the lighter feature that doesn't have the depth that comes out here. No, there isn't a huge plot to the movie, but it's more than normal and seems all the stronger due to the great job the cast does with it. The sex is every bit as strong, and features Kayden and Manuel in one of the best scenes I've watched in recent memory. The rest of the cast also does a great job, and the movie as a whole completely impressed me from start to finish with some very nice mood swings as well as a nicely handled story, great acting, and hot sex. If you're looking for a feature with just a little substance, make sure you check out The Smiths.

The Extra Stuff

Trailers are included for eight other Digital Playground releases. The photo gallery can be viewed either photo by photo or as a three and three quarter minute slide show with about six seconds per still. There's also a behind the scenes featurette, cumshot recaps, and weblinks.

The behind the scenes featurette lasts about ten minutes. Amidst a few shots around the set, Kayden talks about her first day at DP, working with Robby D., and the movie. She also talks about porn and shoots some of the movie before things move on with Riley around the set. Things return for a little more chatting with Kayden and a few more shots around the set with the cast. This is a nice little behind the scenes featurette. You get plenty of personality from Kayden and Riley, as well as a very good feeling around the set. At only ten minutes in length there isn't time to get too deep, but for its length it works quite well. This is a nice addition to the overall DVD.

The Bottom Line:

Currently, many Digital Playground DVDs can be found online for between about $19 and $30 with most stores offering them in the low twenties. This one's well worth the money. Both the sex and story aspects of the movie are handled very well with Manuel and Kayden turning out one of the best scenes I've seen in recent memory. The technical aspects are handled nicely and there's a nice touch of care in the extras with a short behind the scenes featurette. This is a very nice movie that far exceeded my expectations.
