Title: Sexual Positions for Lovers: Beyond the Missionary Position
Studio: Sinclair Intimacy Institute
Year of Production: 1993
Running Time: about 50 minutes + 30-minute extra film

This program is hosted by Dr. Derek Polonsky (Harvard Medical School), Dr. Marian Dunn (Downstate Medical School), who did a good job providing some general information without going into too much detail which can be good for some viewers, but not enough for others. There is not much new that they are covering – teaching you all the positions from Kama Sutra was not their primary goal, so they licked the top of the iceberg.

The program was shot to be presented on videotape, which explains why the video quality of this DVD is so low. The picture is very grainy, bodies of the people showing the positions are glowing as if they were shining angels who just descended from the sky. The background of every scene is usually quite dark, the entire combination of these shining bodies and dark background may look a little depressing – at least it did to me.

If you like your education to be fun, it’s not a DVD for you, because, unlike some other educational DVDs released recently, this one sounds more like your doctor’s explanation about what kind of movements you are allowed to do and what kind of positions are good for you if your leg is broken. It’s more of a training guide, some sort of “Sexual Positions for Dummies”. The explanations and recommendations are somewhat monotone, and, as I mentioned above, a lot of the stuff discussed here is pretty general, doctors mostly use medical language and scientific terms to separate themselves from the unenlightened public. If you like watching Discovery Channel (it’s not about the colors, but about the content), it’s your type of program, otherwise don’t buy this DVD. I would not say that it is boring – it’s just not a Friday night sort of thing – it requires some mental effort and downloads a lot of info into your memory. The hosts discuss several positions, their pros and cons, point out what should be done and how. All the suggested positions are illustrated by average-looking couples. Remember, it’s not a f..k flick, it’s an educational program 'designed to make your sexual life richer and more exciting'. You can watch this DVD with your significant others, friends, and dates. This program would be all right to show to medical students :)

Extras:
Bonus Film (30 minutes): a film about Tantric sex (ancient Indian sex techniques – if you have heard about Kama Sutra, then you know what they are talking about). This film was shot in 1997, so it has much higher quality and is way more interesting, informative, and useful than the feature. It explains some basics of tantric sex – how to prolong your intercourse, have multiple orgasms, breath correctly, and generally enhance your sexual life.

Overall: This DVD is just one of the volumes of Sinclair Institute series, and it’s not their best film (maybe because it’s old).
