Sex Shooter (New Machine) Review

"100% Nina"… or so it says on the cover.

Well, actually, it’s more like "75% Nina". "80% Nina" if you really want to push it. But, sufficient to say, if you love Nina Hartley, then this is your kind of DVD!

Now when this reviewer saw the words "Sex Shooter" I had absolutely no idea what that involved. Would this be a target game? Shoot a few targets on the screen and get some video of Nina? Or perhaps it would be a drinking game? Come up with some shot glasses and then play trivia games until you get drunk or you see some sex scenes with Nina. Fortunately it’s none of he above.

Well let’s turn to the box cover: "Sex Shooter is a revolutionary interactive DVD edit system where you can direct Nina’s shots from several different angles and create new exciting scenes all from your DVD player. No special hardware or software required."

Well it’s good to have that little tidbit if information beforehand, because the minute you put either one of the two DVDs in you’re right in the middle of the Sex Shooter! That’s right, you don’t get a title screen. You don’t start off in the Main Menu. There’s nothing to introduce you to the Sex Shooter. You go right into the Sex Shooter, and you had better know how it works because there are no instructions! There’s no "help" feature or even a tutorial to explain how it works.

So here’s how it works: the Sex Shooter has a pre-recorded sex scene done from multiple angles. Your job is to select which angle the scene will focus on for a particular segment. There are numerous angles and close-ups, including a Point-Of-View or POV scene done with a hand-held camcorder. Clicking on that angle with your mouse or DVD remote will select that segment and take you to the next segment. Once you’re finished clicking on the angles for each scene, the computer or player will combine all of the segment angles together into one scene and play it back for you.

Now if there’s a segment that you don’t want… maybe you don’t want to spend too much time watching a blowjob and you just want to get to the actual intercourse… well that’s too bad. You have to choose an angle for every segment. You can’t skip a segment, although once you made your choice you can go back to change it.

Both discs have the same kind of features. They have a great-looking menu featuring Nina naked and being quite playful, which each DVD SHOULD have started off with in the first place. In Disc 1, we have Nina with Eric Masterson in the Sex Shooter, which really isn’t too bad once you get the hang of how to use the program itself. But if you don’t want to play that game, you can always go to the feature, which involves Nina with Steve Hatcher carrying out a scene much like the one in the Shooter. There is also an interview with Nina, where she talks about herself and the stuff she believes in. Then there is the Bonus section, which includes a photo gallery, a Behind-The-Scenes video, and a blooper section. Nina is really a class act in these videos and definitely should not be skipped.

Disc 2 has something a little different for the line-up. We have Nina with Phoenix Ray doing a girl-girl version of the Sex Shooter, which is really very playful, and then for the feature there’s just Nina… and her magic fingers. Hey, who would know better to make Nina climax than Nina herself? She does a really great job in this, especially when she talks to the viewer as she’s playing with herself. Nina’s interview segment is also different, because this time it’s also with Phoenix, so in addition to knowing more about Nina, there’s also some stuff about the new girl on the block. Unfortunately the bonus section is identical to the one on Disc 1, which is really something that the folks at New Machine should have done something about. They should have either added some different material or else just skip the bonus section for Disc 2 completely. Either option would have been better than just rehashing the same material from Disc 1, and believe me, there were plenty of other things that New Machine could have added about Nina.

All in all this is a good DVD to get if you’re a fan of Nina Hartley. You get to see her with guys, you get to see her with a hot new girl, you get to see her with herself, and you get to see her being quite playful in various stages of undress. There are, of course, some problems with having each disc start with the Sex Shooter instead of going to the Main Menu, and the lack on instructions or a tutorial on making the Sex Shooter work, and for that I have to give a lower overall rating for it. But once you get past that part, you end up with a really good DVD with clear audio and video, and people that look like they’re really having fun doing this. What more can you ask? Well, okay, other than having Nina show up at your house and having sex with you… and like she says in the bloopers, that just isn’t going to happen.
