The Short Story
Initial Expectations: This type of feature seems to be very hit or miss for me. I’m not quite sure what to expect.
Initial Reaction: I think it’s the best DVD release I’ve seen on the subject so far.
Who Should Watch It : Anybody who wants to add more positions to their lovemaking
Who Should Avoid It: Nobody
The Technical Stuff
Audio /Video Quality: The technical aspects are very well done. The audio is very clear and very well balanced. The video is just as good, if not better. To start with, it’s presented in anamorphic widescreen, which gives it a very classy look. It has a hint of grain, but it’s almost like they were trying to approximate film and it never held back the release for me. Finally, there’s some very nice attention paid to the lighting. There’s great use of shadows in the lead-ins, yet the shadows never interfere with the instructional portions of the movie.
Music: The music is nicely done. It has a very simple, basic, and repetitive “drum machine” beat, but it works here. It adds a little to the feature while not being so complex that it draws your attention away from the narration.
Menus: The menus are pretty good. The main menu has a nice feeling and a little animation to give a good first impression. It also lets you choose how you want to watch the movie between an instructional mode, a lovemaking mode, and a random mode. The chapter menu is also nicely done, and lets you choose a section based on a clip from the section and what the position discussed in the area is.
The Feature
The Sex Essentials series is designed for modern couples, since no matter how good your love life is, there’s always room for improvement. It’s hosted by Crystal Lowe, a very cute brunette, and Natasha Ray, a hot blonde. The ladies introduce each area of positions as well as the performers in the movie, and trade off covering the different positions. Each group of positions features its own couple, and nicely starts things off with a romantic lead-in such as a shower, the man arriving home from work in the mood, or the woman distracting her man from work with a sexy tease. The positions are nicely broken down. Male superior positions start things out, followed by female superior, side by side, seated, and rear entry positions. After the basic position for each grouping, several variations are demonstrated which are normally just simple position change that gives different results for the woman. Crystal and Natasha narrate the positions, talking about the advantages and disadvantages of each position, the differences between the variations, and giving important notes about the positions. Each position is nicely examined and never feels rushed.
Seductive Sex Positions is a very nicely done instructional feature. It moves through the positions nicely, and presents them clearly and with plenty of information about them. It doesn’t present a lot of wildly new or original positions, but it does do a great job at presenting many variations to common positions that couples should be familiar with. Most of the positions are easily done by real people rather than acrobats, but there are a few positions thrown in for those who want to get a little more wild with a warning about how they’re not easily physically. I love how the feature started out each group of positions with a sexy lead-in and it also helps that the participants are good looking yet easy to relate to rather than being the “supermodel” style that appears so often in adult movies. It makes the sex acts very approachable for those who are a little nervous about watching this type of feature and makes the segments a little more enjoyable for those who are more experienced. Seductive Sex Positions also impressed me by not limiting itself to just showing the positions. The narration is very well done, and unlike almost all other releases I’ve seen like this, emphasizes the importance of communication in sex because you can’t always see how well your partner is enjoying a position. Seductive Sex Positions is an extremely well done instructional feature, and is one of the best features I’ve seen so far on the subject of sex positions.
The Extra Stuff
To start off with, there’s a quick listing off all the positions covered in the movie where you can jump directly to any position. The first photo gallery lasts about three and a quarter minutes, and includes very nice looking snapshots and full screen photos of the hosts with about six seconds per photo. The second photo gallery also gives you about six seconds per very nice looking photo, but lasts just over two minutes and focuses on the couples in the movie. There’s also weblinks and different ways to watch the release. One of the most notable things about this release is that you’re also given different ways to watch the movie. In addition to the instructional mode, you can also watch it in a lovemaking mode (lasting 43 minutes) or a random mode (lasting 35 minutes). The lovemaking mode strips away the opening introductions from Crystal and Natasha as well as the narrations, leaving the sexy lead-ins and the positions without the information. The random mode strips things down a little further leaving things just with the positions and the screens to let you know what position the people are showing. It’s a very nice variation on the typical instructional feature, and something that I think really helps the overall release.
The Down -n- Dirty Sex Stuff
Themes: Straight, instructional, and tease
Raincoat Factor: High
Condom Usage: None
The Bottom Line:
Currently, the Sex Essentials DVD series can be found online for around $20 at mainstream stores. I always recommend people try to rent instructional videos before they buy them, but this one is done in a way that I think will give plenty of replay value. The material is presented very nicely, the technical aspects are well done, and there’s even some care put into the extras. This is a very nice DVD.Note to Sex Essentials: Great job here! You might want to include a few trailers or some other information on your other releases. If a person cares enough about improving their sexual performance to watch one of your releases, there’s a good chance they’ll give others a chance as well. A few trailers puts that information right in front of them. Heck, after watching this one I knew I was wondering what other releases you’ve done!
