As I guess it's ten years this summer since Rocco shot Sandy Insatiable,
his first Evil Angel release in 1995, I thought it might be interesting
to take a look back at this ground-breaking movie as a means of
gauging how Rocco, amid all that talk of retirement, has developed
as a director over the decade.
The thing is that, like several of his earlier Evil Angel releases,
Sandy Insatiable was not originally conceived as one movie, but
two. The shorter Italian movies Sandy L'Insaziabile
and L'Autobus Del Sesso were edited into one by John
Stagliano in a manner that removes some of the clumsiness in the
original shooting, adds a fraction more pace, and avoids some terrifying
shots of horrific underpants, while sometimes seeming a touch abrupt,
for good reason. Stagliano's cut removed portions of three scenes
considered at the time to be too hot for American distributors to
handle. Though the three major out-takes have been included on this
disc as extras, some of the footage included in the original Sandy
L'Insaziabile is clearly a step too far for the US market, even
today. More on that shortly.
Sandy
L'Insaziabile
The conceit of the movie is a follow on from the preceding 30
Maschi per Sandy (30 Men for Sandy) in which petite
blonde Sandy played (or was…a heady mix of reality and fantasy
is typical) a girl who wrote to Rocco asking to be involved in his
world. Here, blonde Barbie doll Sidony, fake boobs and collagen
pout to the fore, takes her inspiration from this story, making
a similar request to Rocco, who eagerly lays on a series of debauched
sexual surprises for Sidony and Sandy. French starlet Sidony's major
role in the movie actually makes the title slightly misleading,
as does the iconic cover shot, which never actually appears in the
film!
To business - as Rocco meets Sidony, reading over her letter, Sandy
rides her motorcycle over to Rocco's opulent villa, where a group
of randy guys (passed of as members of Rocco's fan club, but including
some well-known Italian porn studs) await her for an al fresco gangbang.
Rocco invites Sidony to watch Sandy in action, frantically reaching
for cocks to suck as she's ass-fucked from the off. Sidony is then
led into a similar affair herself - Rocco leaves her in the less
than capable hands of a bunch of truly amateur-looking guys who
nonetheless treat her to some anal, double penetration and lots
of come, much shot off unintentionally quickly.
The next day, Sidony meets Sandy properly and leads the elfin blonde
to a room full of older gentlemen in varying stages of decrepitude,
from silver haired smoothie to simply decrepit. This is one of those
scenes on a theme revisited not only by Rocco but also by other
Italian directors and is indicative of his taste for the outrageous
as Sandy is urged to suck off the old fellows - including the chap
known as Mario in Dirty Anal Kelly in Rome 2 - and even rim some
of them. Stagliano's edit of this scene thankfully pushes events
along at a quicker pace than the Italian original which dwells a
little longer on the ass-licking and codger copulation, slyly revelling
in the contrast of the youthful lass, eyes wide like some anime
character come to life, and the lecherous older "gentlemen".
Having joined in the fun in the latter stages of the preceding scene,
Sidony is next seen in the toilet, where Rocco bursts in. He manhandles
her crudely, rips off her panties and subjects her to a sadistic
ass-fuck. The 1995 US cut removed much of the most aggressive action,
including slapping and shots of Rocco flushing Sidony's head in
the toilet, though these edits are included in the DVD extras on
this digital re-issue. This relatively short scene has massive impact
nonetheless - the kind of rough, raw action that one either loves
or hates but is hard to look away from. Rocco finally pulls Sidony's
dripping head from the toilet and comes on her face. She did request
to fully participate in his perversions, but did she really want
to go this far? Questions like that remain unanswered.
John Stagliano's edit thankfully speeds up the opening of the next
scene, some rather narcissistic swimming pool posturing by Rocco,
though female viewers may beg to differ. Sandy, in a fetching black
outfit, arrives and treats Rocco to some sensual oral pleasures,
but subtlety is but a fleeting fancy in this movie as Sidony appears
with a surprise for Sandy in the shape of a group of young, naked,
black men. Sandy cannot resist and dashes over to dish out blowjobs
and rimjobs before a pretty lacklustre gangbang ensues - the over-eager
guys aren't really up to it and the editing of this US cut takes
account of this, speeding events along rather more briskly than
the original. Oral, anal and some abrupt come shots - not much to
write home about. Somewhere in the back of my head I also feel a
nagging doubt about the way black men are portrayed in this movie,
and in Never Say Never to Rocco Siffredi, but that's perhaps another
debate for another time.
Sandy and Sidony are next witnessed descending the stairs to room
equipped with some bondage accessories. Sadly the US cut, even with
the outtakes included as extras, still shies away from the full
intensity of the original. A large part of the bondage scenario,
which takes in Sidony first chaining up Sandy prior to Rocco's seizing
of control, has been snipped, with understandable cause, I guess.
The US cut swings quite abruptly to the sex, but in the original
Rocco tortures them with a candle, fairly mildly at first as these
things go, before getting into some hot wax action for Sidony. The
flame edges dangerously close to the restrained, writhing blonde's
pussy, before Rocco quite outrageously jams the lit candle into
her vagina and vigorously shafts her with it. This is followed up
by more hot wax treatment for Sandy, both girls now free, before
Rocco launches into some characteristically forceful anal fucking
for Sidony. Sandy plays a largely submissive role, accepting spit,
sucking ass-fresh cock and rimming her female playmate before ultimately
being doused with come at the end of a truly intense, sweaty and
powerful scene.
L'Autobus
Del Sesso
In a way it's odd to have the preceding as the centrepiece of the
movie, as it's the fitting climax of Sandy L'Insaziabile, with the
events of L'Autobus Del Sesso now taking up the rest of the story.
A restored Sidony peruses Rocco's private video collection while
Sandy speeds on her way to Rocco's house aboard a bus load of fan
club guys (with a sprinkling of known Italian cocksmen thrown in).
Sandy's seen giving out the odd cheeky blowjob as the randy crew
paw her peachy little ass, while Sidony plays with herself back
at the house as she watches a videotape of Rocco's adventures in
a "special nightclub" (ahem!) in Prague - I guess this would be
a prototype for Rocco goes to Prague and Prague by Night. It's similar
fare to those movies, albeit pretty rough and ready in quality (deliberately
so, I suppose), as Rocco circulates around a few of the girls in
this establishment, having his way with a couple of pretty blondes
and a brunette.
One could be cynical and suggest such material is merely a cheap
way of padding out a feature, but it's actually pretty interesting,
and in a way more so than much of what follows. For me the interest
really tails off once the busload of amateur, and not so amateur,
fuckers arrives and Sidony counts off the full fifty of them by
grabbing each cock in turn as the men line up in the lush gardens
of Rocco's villa. Most of the rest of the movie is taken up with
full-on gangbang action and as I am not a fan of the genre I find
it hard to say whether these are good examples or not. Sidony's
does feature lots of anal before the guys start shooting come on
her, but Sandy's is mainly oral, with the little lass grabbing out
for cocks in her inimitable style and being rewarded with lots of
come and a hearty round of applause for her trouble.
Sandy certainly gets fucked good and proper in the finale, another
spectacularly rough affair with the irrepressible Mr Siffredi. Sidony
soaps herself in the bathtub as Sandy does her makeup. The best
shot of the movie sees the camera trace her legs up to that little
bottom, set off perfectly by suspender tights. Rocco enters and
before we know it he's nudging his tool into her ass and crudely
taking her as she kisses her own reflection in the bathroom mirror.
Again, some of the action was originally cut from the US version
as Rocco compels Sandy to put her head into the toilet as he continues
to bugger her, flushing her head before coming over her face.
In
conclusion
It's taken me some time toiling over some way to conclude this review,
not least because while John Stagliano's editing sharpens up the
somewhat bloated originals, Sandy Insatiable is a movie that really
highlights the best and worst of Rocco's movie making. In many ways,
he's an inconsistent producer and has made few steps forward as
a "serious" movie maker (God forbid!), yet given some excellent
recent work, has really zeroed in on his strongest suits rather
than figuring himself as a director in the truest sense of the term.
The ironic thing is that the aspects that I consider somewhat tedious
- the gangbanging amateurs, the constant focus on outrageousness
and sensationalism - are things that may well appeal most to some
other viewers. On the other hand, while I'm well aware of the outrage
others have felt in the past for the scenes featuring Rocco's oft-times
frankly brutal handling of the two women, these are the scenes that
I feel give us something of an insight, albeit scanty, into why
these girls might be compelled to act like this. Such evidence is
in short supply as Rocco merely scratches the surface, leaving us
with stereotypes of insatiable nymphomaniacs and a lot of unattractive
geezers straining for the chance to get their knobs sucked by the
girls.
I must admit I am not a big fan of Sidony at all. I found it odd
that she got such a big share of the limelight in a movie ostensibly
focussing on the pixie-like Sandy - Sidony never seems quite so
genuine. Ultimately, I am left somewhat bemused by the whole event,
though in the greater scheme of things in the world of porn, Sandy
Insatiable certainly has its place. For the sheer sense of decadence
and perversity, it teaches many modern moviemakers a trick or two
and I can't help feeling that in the work of Mason in particular
today we can see echoes of Sandy Insatiable, along with the even
more intense Never Say Never to Rocco Siffredi, in those tales of
the obsessive behaviour of women compelled to act on what are arguably
quite self-destructive sexual impulses.
DVD Comments
Evil Angel of course serve up quality products, and with the original
being shot on what I would presume to be Betacam rather than DV
camcorders, the picture quality here is better than many of the
discs than attracted criticism on image quality. The inclusion of
a few notes along with the offending outtake footage is welcome,
though perhaps it might have been good to see the movie presented
in the original form. Fill it out with fetish menu, biog, photos
- the usual EA deal - and there's little to complain about.
