The Technical Stuff

Audio /Video Quality: The technical aspects are very nicely done. The audio is clear and well balanced, and I don’t think I heard a single background noise. The video is much the same way. There’s some dark areas, but they work well for the movie and I wouldn’t doubt at all that they’re there intentionally. There’s just a touch of grain to the video, which looks very good, and no wild camera motion to interfere with things. Psychotic is a very nice looking and sounding movie.

Music: The music is dark and eerie, but also rests very nicely in the background.

False Advertising: For the first time I know of since Internal Explosions (which came out in October of 2002), there’s no false or questionable advertising that I can see on the cover. Since it’s been over three years since Anarchy’s been able to manage this that I’ve seen, it definitely seemed worth noting here and is something I hope they can keep up in the future and extend to their Playing With... series.

Menus: The main menu has a cheesy feeling that worked together a clip from the movie and the choices, and just had a cheap feeling to it. The chapter menu keeps the cheap feeling, but lets you choose a scene based on the name of the girl(s) in each scene.

The Feature

Scene 1 - Nicki Hunter, James Deen, and Kris Slater

James and Kris start things out taking Nicki, who’s wearing red net sleeves, a black collar, corset, hotpants, and boots, and pulling her across the room to a wooden cross. The guys play into it extremely well also, and help turn what could be a horrible scene into one where you can a least appreciate it even if you can’t get into it. I found myself in just that situation here, as I couldn’t get into the scene too much even though I could look at it and think that it was well done with performers who seemed to be into it.

Scene 2 - Brandi Lyons, Cindy Crawford, and Marcos Leon

There’s plenty of energy once again, but once again the dark feeling held the scene back for me. It’s a well done scene, but just not something that worked particularly well for me.

Psychotic is a well done piece of dark porn. Nicki and Josh Hunter do a very nice job of keeping things dark, but not so dark that it completely kills the sexuality of the scenes. There’s a great female domination aspect to the movie, and that aspect was handled very well and something I wish more directors would include in their movies. Cindy Crawford and Brandi Lyons’ scene with Marcos Leon was easily my favorite in the movie, but the other girls also do a very good job. Brooke’s scene was probably the biggest disappointment for me, and that’s just because I really hated how the cumshots at the end were handled. My main problem with the movie was the dark feeling, which is something I can see making the movie one people will either really like or one that won’t do anything for them. Watching Psychotic was a bit tough for me because the dark feeling didn’t do anything for me, yet the action was well done and showed some definite care. Psychotic is far from your typical porno, but it’s well done and has a dark feeling one doesn’t normally find in adult movies.

The Extra Stuff

The photo gallery lasts nearly three minutes with about five seconds per nice looking snapshot. Trailers are included for Shooters, Blasted, NarcASSist, Anal Life, and Johnys Vision, just like on almost every other Anarchy DVD I’ve checked out. There’s also commercials and a behind the scenes featurette.

The behind the scenes featurette lasts over twenty minutes. Nicki starts things out looking wonderfully slutty and talking about using her snake in the movie. There’s a little more talk about the snake before Nicki poses for a few stills and starts to get some dick. Cindy is next, who talks about her scene and loving porn before posing with the snake. Tyla is next, who gets a little guidance from Nicki and has a few words as well. Nicki returns to talk about a little reward after they’re done shooting as well as how much she loves guys and how far she takes that love. She works with Julie a little about their scene, and even lets Julie talk dirty. This is a very nice behind the scenes featurette. There’s a very nice mix of the scene being shot with the prep and interviews with the stars, and you get a fair amount of personality to go with it. There’s also plenty of shots of Nikki working with the cast to let you know that the movie was directed by Nicki Hunter rather than by a suitcase pimp who’s just using her name.

The Bottom Line:

Currently, may of Anarchy’s DVDs can be found online for between about $10 and $25 with several stores offering them for under $15. If you’re a fan of porn with a very dark feeling, then Psychotic will probably be well worth the money, but others will probably want to rent it first or aim low. The sex is dark and nasty, and although it didn’t always work for me at the same time it never felt poorly done. The technical aspects show some nice care, and there’s some decent effort put into the extras as well. This DVD won’t be for everybody, but it’s far from crap.

Note to Anarchy: Although this one didn’t work the best for me, it’s easy to see why you put Nicki Hunter behind a camera and I hope you put her back there for a few more movies.
