Synopsis:
There is a robbery at work and the boss suspects Eva, his secretary, so he hires a private detective to follow her. The detective finds out that she belongs to a club that fronts for a cult going by the name of the Golden Phallus.

Video/Audio:
When the Night Falls is presented in a full screen ratio, 1.33:1, which appears to be the original aspect ratio for this film. The color levels are perfectly balanced and there is not an artifact or blemish in sight. Basically, it doesn't get much better than this.

The 2.0 French Stereo track appears to be the original audio track for the film. Being as I don't understand a word in French, I chose to listen to the 2.0 English Stereo Dub track. For all of the good that it did, the track might have well have been the French track. The narration is at a much higher volume than the spoken dialog, so when you are comfortably listening to the narration, you can't hear a word of the spoken dialog. The sex dubbing is also very off from the action that is taking place on the screen. Overall, a very poorly mixed audio track, they could have done much better. There are also 2.0 dub stereo tracks in the following languages: German, Spanish, and Italian and there are subtitles for Norwegian, Swedish, Danish, Portuguese, and Polish.

Chapters/Time Code:
When the Night Falls offers 10 chapters available from the main menu, which allows for adequate ability to navigate through the film to find a pedicular part of interest. There is a time code on the disc so time-searching is also an option.

Special Features:
When the Night Falls is rather bare as far as the special features are concerned. First up is the Cast, which lists interests, magazines appeared in, Private VHS tapes appeared in and Private DVD discs appeared in for the following cast members: Dolly Golden, Eva Falk, Florance Marlay, Jade Lee, Jessica Flame, Karen Lancome, Kelly H., Lora, Lennox, and Swanny. Next is the Photobook which contains 40 still photos from the film that you flip through manually. After that is Production Notes, which is a text-only feature that gives useless information about the film. Last up is Other Titles, which features previews for the following Private titles: Private Life of Cassandra Wild, Superfuckers 5, Intrigue & Pleasure, Love Me Deadly, and Sex Non-Stop. Overall, not much here to compliment the movie, but I guess it is better than nothing at all. There is certainly nothing here to base renting or purchasing the disc on.

DVD-ROM Special Features:
The DVD-ROM extras that are present on the disc are Internet Activated DVD Catalog and a PC Bonus. As I don't have a DVD-ROM drive, I have no further information on these features.

Review:
I've heard many good things about Private's films, so I started watching this with great expectations. Unfortunately, none of them were lived up to. To start with, the initial story concept is a decent idea, but it breaks down almost immediately. Be it due to the story never being properly worked out or be it due to the very poor dubbing but the story becomes nothing but fast forward fodder. And this is coming from someone who likes porn with a plot.

So, as we all know, in an adult film, the most important part is the sex and how good it is; a part that I've heard Private is really good at, not in this film though. The sex scenes in this film are as formulaic as most of the current American adult films. From the moment each scene starts you know exactly what moves are going to be done when. Personally, I like some variety in my scenes, give me something different to watch each time. The only main difference between the sex scenes here and the ones in the current American films are each one has a huge emphasis on anal sex.

They even managed to screw up the lesbian scene. Just like their American counterparts, as the lesbian scene is building up, it cuts out really quickly and goes into another so-called plot portion. So take all this and add on horrible dubbing for the sex scenes and that is all When the Night Falls turns out to be.

There were some good aspects to the film though. Other than the video being perfect, the film is beautifully shot, each of the so-called plot portions is perfectly framed as well as the sex scenes. So you get to watch a beautifully photographed piece of crap instead of a poorly photographed piece of crap. The locations used were nice as well and gave a decent setting for the scenes.

The Money Shot:
I can't recommend this film to couples, people who like a decent plot with their film, people who don't like a plot with their films and those who dislike a multitude of anal scenes. As for fans of Private films and anal scenes, if you don't mond your sex scenes being very repetitive, I still recommend renting this film before purchasing. The video is beautiful, but the audio needs much work.
