The Technical Stuff

Audio /Video Quality: The technical aspects are pretty good. The audio is clear and well balanced for the most part, but there are a few minor background noises and balance problems early in the movie. The video left me a little disappointed right away by going with a non-anamorphic transfer for the widescreen presentation rather than giving it the anamorphic transfer it deserves. There's a few shadows and some nice natural lighting as well as some good handheld camera work that never gets shaky or sharp.

Music: There's a touch of music at the very start, but that's it.

Menus: The main menu has a fun photo shoot style feel before settling into a still. The chapter index nicely lets you choose a scene based on a small clip of each scene and the name of the girl(s) in it, while the “Select a Star” option lets you choose a scene based on a still of each girl and her name before letting you choose where you want to go in the scene sexually.

The Feature

Van Styles Pin Up Honeys goes with a simpler feel. The outfits are here, as is the interaction with Van. Each girl gives him a little show and chats with him before getting it on with a guy or maybe a guy and another girl.

Pin Up Honeys is an okay gonzo release. As usual, Van has some nice interaction with the girls and keeps the barely legal feel and costumes throughout the movie. The chemistry varies a little throughout the movie, but rarely gets down to the average level. That said, this one just didn't work as well for me as his other movies. To start with, the action just seemed to similar from scene to scene, as the first four scenes were all boy – girls scenes with the girls getting minimum oral attention before going to the fucking, and and the fucking start out with a cowgirl ride in every scene but one in the movie. The other thing that struck me throughout the movie is what made the girls “pin up” quality. None of the girls are bad looking, but the pin up theme of the movie and the opening tease made me hope that Van was going to get a little more creative and artistic with the teases and outfits rather than just chatting with each of the girls in the same style of outfits that normally appear in his movies. I guess Pin Up Honeys left me a little disappointed because although there's nothing really wrong with the movie, there was nothing really special to set it apart either. Van comes across as a nice guy with a great eye, but he seemed to be coasting through Pin Up Honeys rather than pushing for something top of the line or trying something a little different.

The Extra Stuff

The photo gallery lasts about six and a half minutes with about six seconds per very nice looking full screen photo or snapshot. Trailers are included for A List, Beaver Hunt 3, Britney Rears 2, Take it Black 4, Busty Beauties 18, and ButtFuck. There's also commercials and a behind the scenes featurette.

The behind the scenes featurette not only lasts over forty minutes, but unlike the movie, is presented in anamorphic widescreen! Franchezca starts things off chatting with Van a little while getting made up, dressed, and taking care of a little paperwork before she and Mark go to work on each other. They even play back and forth a little between and after she takes him on. Van heads outside to chat with Page as she smokes, and even encourages her to blow some smoke into the camera to make all those smoke fetishists out their happy. Currently, many of Hustler’s DVDs can be found online for between about $16 and $25 with stores offering it everywhere in between. I'd aim low here. I like Van's style, but he seemed to coast a bit with this one. The technical aspects are pretty good, but the non-anamorphic video really stands out in the movie. The extras show some very nice care and help out the overall DVD. This is a decent movie on a pretty good DVD.

Note to Hustler: It's great to see you putting the care into your extras to have the behind the scenes featurette in anamorphic widescreen. I hope you put the same care into the main features soon.
