THE MOVIE:
As Obsessions of Avy Scott opens, we watch the titular star in a white dress walking alongside the beach in slow motion, filmed with the camera lens apparently covered by a clear yellow sheet so as to give the sequence a real dream-like quality. There are several things one could be thinking while watching this. a. This beautiful photography is befitting a woman as gorgeous Avy Scott. b. My girlfriend better like this because I sure as heck don't. It looks like Andrew Blake/Michael Ninn art-porn shit. c.Where's my remote? I'm going to need that fast-forward button. Things don't get any better as the storyline begins and we get inane ramblings from Kyle Stone as "the shrink", shots of a white dove being released to the air, and frames being turned upside down to disorient the audience as Stone talks into the camera. Then Katie Morgan and Mr. Pete start having sex and you realize, "Wow, this is one porn film where the sex seems entirely out of place."

That's right folks. Thomas Zupko is back to his old tricks, attempting to marry art-house imagery and heavy-handed themes with 15-30 minute intense sex scenes. On top of that, he is again utilizing the medium to symbolically walk us through the inner psyche of a female porn star. In the past, it was Taylor St. Claire in Whore's Life 1 (2001). Now, it is Avy Scott in Obsessions. However, the end result is not so much an interesting exploration of Ms. Scott's mind as it is Zupko's hackneyed interpretation of her life equipped with his typically pretentious philosophizing. Similar to Whore's, this film's scenes are interconnected by a male figure (Kyle Stone) in control and helping the star explore her own mind, with the sex scenes serving as surreal re-enactments of important events in Scott's life. The dialogue and delivery leaves much to be desired. Zupko spins his wheels more so than usual in crafting dichotomous themes of giving and taking, winning and losing, and hope and despair, eventually coming to an apologetic conclusion. As for Scott, she is the subject of the film more so than she is the star. With Stone carrying the acting load, Avy has little more to do than pose for beautiful shots, such as the sequence described above, and lie on a couch as Kyle talks over her body. On the bright side, Zupko does display his immense talent as a sex shooter and gives 5 solid sex scenes that do seem slightly out of place in their surroundings. Two of the boy/girl scenes star girls with implants and 1 scene is a girl/girl. Avy does absolutely shine in her two sex scenes.

THE SEX:
Scene 1: Katie Morgan () w/Mr. Pete (16 minutes)
Katie, she of the little girl voice and unfortunate store-bought tits, has a snake around her neck as she approaches Pete, who is supposed to be a bus terminal worker. There is a sign in the background that reads "Hope Stops Here" (subtle!) Pete comes out from behind his booth and lies on a table. She pulls down her pants and shoves her butt next to his face. Suddenly, we break out of slow motion and Pete snap his head toward her ass and just goes crazy in tonguing her asshole. With alarming urgency (this is supposed to be her losing her virginity), the two motor through foreplay until he is pounding her hard in missionary, which shows off just how hot it is to see a set of fake tits part like the red sea. They go on to kneeling and standing doggy as well as cowgirl. He pulls out during the last position and shoots off on her ass.

Scene 2: Vanessa Michaels w/Van Damage (26 minutes)
Van, who I think is supposed to be interviewing Vanessa for a job, gives an a-typical Zupko speech about questioning the existence of God and learning from the teachings of Socrates, Plato, and Satan. This is filmed mostly in close-ups on his mouth, emphasized by the cigar he is smoking. Vanessa, a truly gorgeous blonde with a killer natural D chest, sits and reacts like a porn actress hired to do a boy/girl scene. Eventually, she gets that much closer to being able to go home as Van dances briefly for her and she returns the favor. She sucks dome dick and bends over on a couch for kneeling doggy. They run through cowgirl and reverse cowgirl (boobies bouncing!) before he drops an average load on her chin. Once the sex started, Vanessa was a fine little porn star. Before that? She's no actress.

Scene 3: Avy Scott and Taylor Kurtis (19 minutes)
Smoking fans take notice. This one starts with a terribly superfluous sequence of Avy smoking a cigarette, depicted in both mouth close-ups and face close-ups, as a faceless man across from her does the same. Cutting back to reality, Kyle, dressed in drag as a hooker now, talks over Avy about losing faith in the lesser half of the population which leads to experimentation which leads to girl-on-girl action. On a stage covered in cotton balls and with a blue sky/white cloud background, Avy and Taylor go at it with Ms. Scott being the instigator. The highlight comes when Avy uses a double dildo like one would normally use a strap-on, sitting on her knees and thrusting on her end to get more of it into Taylor. It's hot. Avy, in the end, gets a dildo in the ass in four positions. Although Kurtis is really on the receiving end of most of the action, this is Avy's scene. If Kurtis is getting her ass fingered or pussy licked, we see Avy doing it and enjoying it. We merely hear Kurtis' moans of approval. Not a girl/girl fan myself so I probably won't be re-watching this one anytime soon.

Scene 4: Tory Lane w/Jason Horne (26 minutes)
The "better half of the species" didn't quite do it for Avy. In the words of Banky Edwards, she still "needed cock". However, it is insinuated that someone (girl or man) betrayed Avy. This appears to be represented in this scene with Tory Lane, filmed at the beginning to mimic the earlier slow-motion smoking exchange Avy shared with an unseen male. We abruptly switch from slow-mo to normal speed as soon as the first sexual contact, in this case a blowjob, occurs. Wearing only a pink choker, Tory "big fake tits" Lane, displaying rather impressive oral skills, practically assaults Horne's dick. He, the bastard, does not repay her at all, bypassing any lickity-lickity and just getting to her in kneeling doggy. She doesn't seem to mind. Instead, she gives as much as gets in sideways missionary, reverse cowgirl, and cowgirl, playing it up a bit for the camera. She gets some wine poured down her throat before he starts pounding her ass in kneeling doggy and the two cowgirls. It ends with a good sized facial. Hot scene.

Scene 5: Avy Scott w/Van Damage (21 minutes)
Avy, a lady who's sure that all that glitters is gold, ends the film on the stairway to heaven, which apparently leads to a grey-haired Van Damage. Again, they've utilized what resources they had (cotton balls, blue sky/white cloud background) to make a setting-the stairway-appear as if it were in the sky. Avy crawls, depicted through numerous quick shots, to the top and the musical key indicates that her making it to and kissing Van is a big deal. They don't waste any time, as she goes straight from a peck on the lips to jamming his dick all the way down her throat. Got to love the way some porn stars use saliva during blowjobs. An invisible cut magically places a condom on Van's dick, just in time for Avy to give it a ride in cowgirl and reverse cowgirl. However, that was just the warm-up for the hot bits of anal they do in sideways missionary, cowgirl, and doggy (great over-the-shoulder quasi-POV shots). She gets some cum in the mouth in the end. Not quite as good as Avy and Van's scene from Rectal Rooter 8, but still pretty hot.

DVD Extras: Behind the Scenes (10 minutes), Avy Scott Tease (4 minutes), Interviews-Taylor Kurtis, Katie Morgan, and Tory Lane (7 minutes), Avy Scott Interview (27 minutes)-Zupko's drunk; Avy's with her boyfriend. Split into two parts, it is pretty much a train wreck.

Final Thought: Until recently, Thomas Zupko's career had been characterized by excess, be it from the attention he received in the adult press to the content of his films to the way he way he presented himself to the industry. He was an artistic rebel and he wanted you to know that. What are you rebelling against, Mr. Zupko? Whatever we've got apparently. However, then he got away from Rob Black and Extreme Associates and seriously embraced the all-sex format as a director for Elegant Angel, Mayhem (Sin City), and now Hustler. These films were damn good "stroke flicks" too. Away from work, his life was just as marked with change. He lost a considerable amount of weight, and adopted a truly positive outlook on life, no less excessive than his former negative one some could argue. So, what happens to this bright ray of sunshine when Hustler tells him to do a feature? He turns right back to his old habits, crafting an homage to a woman that is as much a testament to her appeal as it is an indication of his immense fascination with her. Look. Zupko is an acquired taste, and he works for me as sex shooter. Outside of that? Not so much. But he did work around Avy Scott's then-exclusive (now non-existent) contract with Naughty America to make this film happen and as a huge Avy fan I thank him (and her). She's looking better than ever and really delivers in her scene with Van Damage.

RENT IT or BUY IT: Looking for a stroke flick? NEITHER. Interested in something a little different? RENT IT. Love Avy Scott? BUY IT.
