Nova Dubai is a documentary-style dramatic hardcore gay movie from actor, writer, and director Gustavo Vinagre. Throughout Nova Dubai, the viewer is never sure how much is an attempt to cover reality and how much is just penned fiction by Vinagre or if anything presented within the movie is real. Sadly, Nova Dubai is constantly going nowhere fast and often leaves the viewer wondering what exactly is going on.

Nova Dubai doesn't appear to have a plot of any sort nor a central arc behind the movie. Vinagre and his friend (Bruno D'Ugo) are shown wandering around São Paulo, Brazil. They are shown walking around, and not walking around, having inane conversations, peeing on things, watching porn on the computer, masturbating, and having sex in random places.

There are other people shown in the movie. D'Ugo's ex-boyfriend (Caetano Gotardo) is often shown at various São Paulo locales describing the plots of various American horror movies. And a person who tried to commit suicide to cease working in cubicles. The biggest issue with Nova Dubai is that none of these stories ever merge or really make sense as to why they are being presented to the viewer.

There appears to be an attempt to show the disparity between the people currently living in São Paulo versus the people that the housing developments going into São Paulo are intended for. However, if this is the take away the viewer is supposed to get Nova Dubai is an utter failure. The sex scenes in the movie are hardcore, however, they aren't well shot and are very short. It is unlikely the sexual scenes presented in the movie will titillate any viewers.

Whatever Vinagre was trying to do with Nova Dubai, he, unfortunately, failed at. Nova Dubai is a slow, boring, and ugly movie that unravels in an incomprehensible fashion. At the end, the viewer is left lost since nothing ever comes together or makes sense. This reviewer is unsure what exact audience Nova Dubai was intended for and is unable to recommend this movie to anyone.

The edition of Nova Dubai screened is the streaming only version available on NakedSword. NakedSword Film Works has done a good job with their streaming only release of Nova Dubai. Nova Dubai was shot digitally and is presented in the anamorphic widescreen aspect ratio of 1.78:1 in 1080p. The image quality for Nova Dubai is beautiful with rich and vibrant colors and no blemishes within the video that can be detected.

Nova Dubai is presented with a Portuguese Stereo audio track. This reviewer doesn't speak Portuguese but there are no noticeable issues with the audio and the dialog appears to be clear and easy to understand. There are burned in subtitles for Nova Dubai which are decent, however, there are noticeable spelling mistakes within the subtitles that make them look rushed.

NakedSword Film Works hasn't included any extras for Nova Dubai.

Nova Dubai has been released by NakedSword through their NakedSword Film Works (NSFW) division that was launched in 2016 to exhibit gay independent movies that aren't exactly pornographic yet aren't exactly mainstream. Nova Dubai appears to be a drama done in a pseudo-documentary style with hardcore sex mixed in. What exactly Nova Dubai is attempting to tell the viewer is incomprehensible and the sex scenes are not erotic. Nova Dubai isn't recommended for any viewer. NakedSword Film Works has done a good job with their streaming only release of Nova Dubai on NakedSword. The audio and video are in great shape but there are spelling issues within the subtitles.
