The Movie |
San Francisco's Bush Street Nob Hill Theatre has been a landmark in gay life for 50 years. Nob Hill Theatre started as a gay adult film theater under the ownership of Shen Sayles. Throughout its existence, Nob Hill Theatre transformed from a gay adult film theater to a male strip club. Nob Hill has had a meaningful impact on the history of gay culture. It was even a character of sorts in Wakefield Poole's Take One. The current owners Larry Hoover and Gary Luce, who bought the theater from Shen Sayles, have reached the point they were looking to retire to Palm Beach, Florida. Unable to find a buyer who would want to continue the legendary theater, on August 19, 2018, at 6 pm Nob Hill Theatre closed its doors for the last time ending an era.
Nob Hill is writer and director mr. Pam's tribute to Nob Hill Theatre. Nob Hill stands as an excellent homage to the iconic theater. mr. Pam has chosen a very unique way to construct Nob Hill that ultimately works perfectly for the movie.
Nob Hill starts as a fictionalized and dramatized account of the last days of the legendary Nob Hill Theatre. Leo Forte and Adam Killian play the owners, Gary Luce and Larry Hoover, respectively — Larry Hoover does have a cameo appearance in the movie by the way. mr. Pam uses the fictionalized and dramatized account of the last days of the Nob Hill Theatre to highlight the various aspects of the theater itself, allowing the theater to become immortalized forever. Each area of the theater features a sex scene as it is being shown off to the viewer.
Then we get to “The Finale.” “The Finale” is the final show exhibited at Nob Hill Theatre before the theater's closure. The theater was sold out, and there was standing room only tickets sold until the theater was at capacity.
“The Finale” is the end of Nob Hill. However, in a creative move, mr. Pam doesn't recreate “The Finale” for Nob Hill. She was on hand for the actual show and preserved the closing night festivities. At this point in Nob Hill, the movie itself becomes part of the closing festivities. The show was shot as any live show would be so cameras are captured as it is a live experience.
This reviewer isn't sure that this approach would have worked in any other movie; however, in Nob Hill mr. Pam has blended everything so that this approach feels like it is the only way that Nob Hill could have ended.
Nob Hill looks beautiful as well. The movie is excellently captured, including the live show. Capturing a live show well isn't an easy feat, and this movie makes the live show look great. The lighting design in the movie is excellent as well, especially during the gloryhole scene.
mr. Pam has done an excellent job of immortalizing the Nob Hill Theatre that permeated all facets of gay life and film. The theater itself may be gone; however, the theater will always live on in this movie. Nob Hill is highly recommended be the viewer straight or gay. Frequent visitors will want this movie as a remembrance and people who never made it will want this to get a peek at what they missed.

Final Thoughts |
Nob Hill is a genuinely fantastic gay adult movie from writer and director mr. Pam. The movie covers the last days of San Francisco's legendary Nob Hill Theatre. mr. Pam has created what can only be called a beautiful, loving tribute to the theater where fictionalized events leading up to the theater's final day are mixed with actual events that took place in the theater on the last day. The result is a must see movie that will keep the Nob Hill Theatre alive forever. NakedSword has done an excellent job with their streaming-only edition of Nob Hill with beautiful audio and video quality.
