Initial Expectations: Nina’s series of educational features, although informative, have been kind of hit or miss for me so far. I’m not quite sure what to expect.

Audio /Video Quality: For the age of the feature, it looks and sounds great. The sound is normally very clear and well balanced, although it’s a little quiet. Although Nina isn’t always the focus of the camera, she can always be heard clearly as she narrates. There are a few moments in the fellatio feature where there’s a little noise that sounds like somebody bumped the mic and a bit that’s a little hollow. There’s also a few minor background noises. In both cases the video is also very good and has very little grain, although there is a small soft focus problem in the fellatio fantasy.

Music: There isn’t any music during the educational portions, but there’s typical porn music during the fantasy scenes that’s nicely balanced with the rest of the audio. .

Menus: The main menu is very simple but works. It’s kind of a combined main menu and chapter menu. You can go to either cunnilingus or fellatio for main features or get a biography of Nina or web site information. If you choose one of the main features you go into another menu giving chapters for that feature. For an education DVD with two features it’s nicely done.

The Feature: Nina Hartley has been one of the mainstays of the adult film world through three decades. In that time, as well as making hundreds of features, she’s been a vocal supporter for first amendments rights, health issues, and responsible porn. I don’t know if she has a degree in Sexology, which is probably more of a lay term (pun intended), but after the amount of time she’s had devoted to sex I think I’d trust Nina on most common sex matters more than a PhD. If it’s sexual, you know she’s probably had some kind of experience with it, as opposed to the PhD who, odds are, was studying instead of getting busy. Nina Hartley’s Guide to Oral Sex is actually a combination of two oral sex features, one a guide to cunnilingus (pussy eating) and the other a guide to fellatio (or blowjobs). In both cases, Nina’s spent more than enough time on her knees to know plenty of tips for both techniques.

The Cunnilingus feature lasts for almost fifty three minutes. Nina starts off giving a little speech about oral sex and goes on to a health class style lesson on the female sex organs. She also gives a short description of Kegel exercises for the PC muscles and how it can help you sexually. She even breaks out the pussy puppet for a few demonstrations as well as a few slides.

After the lecture, Angela Faith, Nina, Nina’s husband David, and Moose give a demonstration. Angela is strapped up on a love swing for easy access for both her partner and the camera. Each person sits between Angela’s spread legs. Nina and David each give a small demonstration and lecture, while Moose, who apparently got the long straw earlier that day, gets to actually do the main deed. In addition to the camera catching most of what Moose does, Nina gives a play by play on his actions. It’s a nice mix of education and sex. The only complaint I have about it is there aren’t many different techniques demonstrated here. It’s a great way to show the basics, but there isn’t much here for anybody who’s been down on a woman where any communication is involved.

Finally, in the cunnilingus section, is one of Nina’s fantasies, called The French Lesson. Nina and Angela are on a train seated next to each other. Angela falls asleep on Nina and wakes up, apologizing. Nina doesn’t speak much English, but they manage to communicate just the same, especially after Nina opens her legs wide for Angela. Angela works her way gently into Nina’s pussy with her tongue and fingers, with the camera getting just the right angles to capture her motions extremely well. Angela gets to receive next, with Nina demonstrating a little more aggressive technique for pussy eating. It’s a good little scene that has good chemistry and heat as well as having fun.

The fellatio feature lasts an hour and three minutes. Nina starts out with a short discussion of the origin of fellatio as a word and moves onto an anatomical description of the cock, nicely combining layman’s terms with medical terms while showing a few slides and using a dildo to demonstrate. Once again, Nina describes how to exercise the PC muscle through Kegel exercises.

Next, Nina brings out Alex Sanders, who apparently knows which lotteries to enter, to help with a demonstration. She adds a few tips with things such as how to tell when he likes what you’re doing (he’s hard) or small techniques. She also gives a few tips for women who don’t really enjoy cocksucking or for when you’re interrupted by things like the phone, your kids coming in, or a surprise birthday party. She covers most everything for blowjobs from the traditional stereotypical style to mouth fucking to combining the hand and the mouth while also subtly emphasizing the importance of communication during sex. Nina does a great job of combining her narration with her demonstrations and all the time making it look like it’s one of her absolute favorite things to do. She finishes it off with a nice demonstration without the commentary ending up with Alex’s ball butter all over her tits.

Finally, Nina presents one of her fantasies entitles A Thing of Beauty is a Joy Forever . Nina starts out as a painter doing a nude portrait of Alex Sanders. She senses something wrong and finally figures out the main problem is Alex’s cock isn’t hard enough but knows her mouth can fix that. After a little oral tease, Alex and Nina kiss a bit and work through a little other foreplay such as dryfucking. Finally, Nina drops down to show what her mouth can do while Alex shows near superhuman control. Unlike the cunnilingus scene, which focused on the subject of the feature, this one goes beyond Nina’s mouth and hands working over Alex’s rod. There were some spots where you couldn’t even see if Alex was really fucking Nina or not and the closeups didn’t look like they really belonged where they were put. There are minor complaints, but they bothered me enough to hold back this scene a little for me.

Nina Hartley’s Guide to Oral Sex is worth checking out if you think you need work in this area. The topics are covered in a very viewer friendly manner, although some of it is a little basic. The DVD nicely combines two separate features, one on cunnilingus and the other on fellatio, which lets you watch a feature concerning just what you want to see. Each feature nicely balances a fairly medical lecture to give the basics, a demonstration, and a sex “fantasy” scene to give a little of what the porn fans might like. It ends up a nice package that should please most everybody who picks it up.

Extras: As with the rest of the Nina Hartley’s Guide to: series, there isn’t much for extras. There’s a short biography and website information .

Overall: Currently, Nina Hartley’s Guide to Oral Sex can be found online for between $13 and $22 with many stores offering it for under $15. If you feel you need help in the oral sex area, you should definitely check out this DVD. It nicely blends lectures and demonstrations without making it stuffy. The transfer is a little above average, but the extras lack.
