Initial Expectations: I’ve had mixed results from this series, so I’m keeping an open mind.

Audio /Video Quality: As usual with this series, the technical aspects are lacking a bit. The audio is often clear, but the balance isn’t always even. The video looks like it hasn’t been touched since the original video transfer. There’s quite a bit of grain and the video is often a bit fuzzy.

Music: The music is the standard porn style. It starts off very soft and unobtrusive, but moves on to become loud and annoying while adding a little mood to the sex.

Menus: The menus are pretty basic. The main menu doesn’t have any animation and the chapter menu lets you choose a scene based on a decent description and a small clip of the scene.

The Feature: Nina Hartley has been one of the mainstays of the adult film world through three decades. In that time, as well as making hundreds of features, she’s been a vocal supporter for first amendments rights, health issues, and responsible porn. I don’t know if she has a degree in Sexology, which is probably more of a lay term (pun intended), but after the amount of time she’s had devoted to sex I think I’d trust Nina on most common sex matters more than a PhD. If it’s sexual, you know she’s probably had some kind of experience with it, as opposed to the PhD who, odds are, was studying instead of getting busy.

The first half hour of the feature is dedicated to education. Nina starts out with a gentle warmup and an anatomy and physiology lesson somehow avoiding the line “Rectum? Damn near killed him!”. She talks about the importance of taking things at your own speed and the importance of a high fiber diet before moving on to a demonstration with Anna Malle. They demonstrate some beginning exercises, and anal stimulation with fingers before Nina has John Decker demonstrate and talking about rimming. Finally, Nina talks about some tips about things that you put in your ass, such as the necessity for a flared base for toys and making sure all the objects are very smooth.

The remainder of the feature is dedicated to sex. Nina Hartley and Anna Malle start out working each other over while Hank Armstrong and John Decker watch, and then let the boys join in on the oral fun. Not surprisingly, Anna moves things on so she can get fucked first, while Nina plays around a bit longer with oral fun. Anna also takes the anal first, but Nina also takes it later showing it much slower and making sure John wears some protection. Hank gives Anna a great facial and then goes back for more, while John appears to pop in the condom in Nina’s ass while she proclaims “Touchdown!”. After Hank and Anna leave, Nina and John go at it again, this time without the condom, and John decorates Nina’s face and chest to end things. It’s a pretty good scene that works due to the great chemistry between the performers as well as the obvious fun they’re all having. Unfortunately, it doesn’t show many of the things that were talked about earlier. There’s very little warmup for either woman’s ass, with Nina getting a little more by having John rub his cock against it a few times. It’s still a good scene, but it would have been nice to have seen a bit more of some of the preparations which are so important for beginning anal sex.

Nina Hartley’s Guide to Anal Sex is a decent starting point for any woman curious about trying anal sex. It’s very basic, but does give a few good starting tips. Unfortunately, it’s basic enough that I think I’d only recommend renting this one, and would also strongly recommend checking out some of the anal guides from other companies.

Overall: Currently, most of the Nina’s Guide to series can be found for between $13 and $21 with many stores offering it for under $15. I’d recommend renting this one instead of buying it. It’s very basic and shouldn’t have too much replay value. It also has a slightly below average transfer and no real extras.

Note to Adam & Eve : I realize this is one of your earlier DVDs, and it’s great to see how far you’ve come since then.
