Nights in Black Leather is a gay feature-style film featuring Peter Berlin as, well, Peter Berlin that is more of a vignette film than a feature film. The narrative that holds the sex scenes together is a German (Peter Berlin), who has just arrived in San Francisco from Berlin, is in a park writing about his experiences and his travels through the city of San Francisco.

Nights in Black Leather is beautifully shot, however, it is devoid of substance; unless that substance is Peter Berlin. Like his later film That Boy, Nights in Black Leather serves as a showpiece for Peter Berlin and not much more. The sex scenes in the film grow in intensity as the film progresses. The film starts out with phone sex and masturbation, before moving onto a male on male scene. Then the film gets into the heavier elements with a slave and a master scene with a group scene to conclude the film. Since this reviewer is straight, it is hard to rate how good the sex scenes are, however, there was nothing horrible that was noticeable in any of them.

Like most feature-style vignette films, there isn't any story arc that connects the entire film together. Just the pretense of Peter Berlin writing about his experiences. Other than that, the sex scene scenarios are completely independent of each other. There are a few issues within the scenarios, most notably the change from the city of San Francisco to the woods happens rather abruptly in the film and could have used a smoother transition.

If one is a fan of Peter Berlin, Nights in Black Leather is going to be a slice of heaven. Berlin is featured in every one of the sex scenes. And when there isn't a sex scene going on, the film is spending its time worshiping Berlin's body. If one isn't a fan of Peter Berlin, Nights in Black Leather is going to seem like little more than a puff-piece worship film.

Gorilla Factory Productions has done an amazing job with their DVD release of Nights in Black Leather. Nights in Black Leather was shot on film and Gorilla Factory Productions has used the original camera negative for this release. Nights in Black Leather is presented in the academy aspect ratio of 1.33:1 in 480i. The color in the film is beautiful and there are the expected artifacts, print damage, and grain. The image quality here is absolutely wonderful.

Nights in Black Leather is presented with an English Dolby Digital 2.0 monaural audio track. The volume level is lower than it should be on the release, however, the dialog in the film is clear and easy to understand at all times. There were no other noticeable issues with the audio presentation.

Gorilla Factory Productions has loaded their special edition release of Nights in Black Leather with extras. There are three loops included on the release. “Ciro & Peter — Part 1,” from 1975, runs for 10 minutes and is silent and in color with Peter Berlin and Ciro. “Ciro & Peter — Part 2,” from 1975, runs for 10 minutes and is silent and in color with Peter Berlin and Ciro. “Waldeslust,” from 1972, runs for 10 minutes and is silent and in color with Peter Berlin.

There is Peter's Vault, which contains more loops. There is “Beach Bum,” which is six minutes long and is silent and in color with Peter Berlin. There is “Black & White & Raw,” which is six minutes long and is silent and in black and white with Peter Berlin. There is “Object of Desire,” which is four minutes long and is silent and in color with Peter Berlin and Jean-Paul. Finally, there is “Forest Duo,” which is six minutes long and is silent and in color with Peter Berlin and Marc Majors.

There are also three photo galleries included on the release; One that offers color images, one that offers black and white images, and one that offers images of Peter Berlin and Ciro.

Nights in Black Leather is a showpiece for Peter Berlin. If you are enamored by Peter Berlin, you will love every minute of the time that Nights in Black Leather spends worshiping him. If you are not a huge fan of Peter Berlin, chances are you won't be as enthralled by the film. Nights in Black Leather is a feature-style vignette gay adult film. Gorilla Factory Productions has done a beautiful job with their DVD release of Nights in Black Leather with a beautiful picture, good audio, and a wealth of excellent extras.
