The Movie |
The Newcomers is a shot on video quickie that's only intention in the world seems to be to have been pushed out into the market as fast as possible. The plot is that Bobby (Steve Drake) keeps calling his wife Laurie (Cara Lott) from the gym but the phone is always busy. He goes home and finds her in bed with another woman (Shaun Michelle). Actually implying that there is a plot throughout this movie is saying far too much, though. The plot essentially only exists during the very beginning of the movie at which point the movie just goes into sex scene after sex scene. There is, what appears to be, a humorous send-off to the movie that just falls flat.
Not even all the sex scenes within the movie were made for this movie. The scene with Misty Dawn and Nick Random was clearly a loop that was sewn into this movie or pulled from another film. Tina (Summer Rose) imagines their scene while she masturbates and unlike the rest of this production, that scene was clearly shot on film, not on video.
The sex scenes aren't great either. They range from average to poor. Especially Tina's masturbation sequence where video effects are used to superimpose a close-up of her playing with her pussy while behind that is her sitting on the stair playing with her pussy. The film spends way too much time dissolving from one shot to another, which is more of a distraction than anything else.
The Newcomers is a great example of everything that was wrong with adult movies in the 80s. The movie was poorly shot. Uses way too many unnecessary video effects that detract from everything that is going on. The plot is a complete afterthought. The sex scenes are mediocre at best. The whole movie is a letdown.
The Edition |
VCX hasn't done an amazing job with their release of The Newcomers. The Newcomers is presented in the academy aspect ratio of 1.33:1 in 480i. The transfer is lacking with a soft video, glitches in the video, some scenes where the color is on the red side, and a band that goes down the left side of the screen. The scene with Misty Dawn and Nick Random, that was clearly taken from another film, contains artifacts and print damage as well but looks the best out of any of the footage in this movie.
The Newcomers is presented with an English Dolby Digital 2.0 monaural mix which is acceptable for the material being shown. There is a hiss present at times but the dialog is clear and can be understood at all times.
VCX hasn't included any extras on this release.
Final Thoughts |
The Newcomers is a bad adult movie from the mid-1980s. The plot is a complete loss. While the movie pretends to have a plot; there was no real effort to have the plot mean anything. The sex scenes are poor. Some of the sex scenes could have been decent, however, video wipes and other video effects are used liberally throughout the movie ruining any heat that the sex scenes might have contained. VCX hasn't done a horrible job with this release but they didn't do an amazing job either.
