REVIEW: That might not mean anything to some, but to me it's kind of a big deal, as I'm not a reviewer of the "churn 'em out" variety. Anyway, I thought I'd do something special for the occasion, and decided to review one of my old favorites from the mid-90s. The only two reviews listed on the IAFD for this title are for the VHS version. One of those reviews is by the legendary "Imperator" who, before he disappeared, was highly revered by a circle of almost cult-like followers as "always being right" , and whose four point rating scale was, for some reason, adopted as a porn reviewing standard there for a while. Perhaps I'm of a "too new" generation, but I never really saw eye to eye with the Imperator most of the time. Sure he wrote great reviews, and they were interesting to read, but he had his particular tastes just like everyone else. I think perhaps it had to do with the fact that he was one of the only games in town on the internet for a while. In any case, the Imperator particularly loved "classic" porn, and by that he meant porn that was produced prior to 1984. Although I've seen my fair share of that kind of porn, I was a good boy and didn't go into an adult video store until the day of my 18th birthday, so my porn watching days started in 1989--a little late to catch the Imperator's golden age while it was still in progress. At any rate, no one listed on the IAFD's comprehensive database has yet done a review of the DVD version of this classic movie. I feel that's a bit of a shame. The younger generation of porn fans are now faced with pretty much a constant stream of brutal, balls to the walls, over the top facades of fake intensity in much of the porn that is currently produced. There's very little attention given to craft anymore, unless you happen to like the beautiful, but somewhat antiseptic stylings of Andrew Blake or Michael Ninn. Even the big feature-oriented boys like Wicked, Digital Playground and Vivid have their own issues with striking that elusive balance between true sexual titillation and just plain good movie-making. Although surely by 1994 when New Wave Hookers #4 was initially released, porn was already a changed beast from the product of the real film makers who gave it a glorious start in the 70s and early 80s, there were still a few of the old-school boys around who actually understood what "craft" and "creativity" meant in the pornographic landscape. Gregory Dark, albeit definitely on the more strangely radical side of the fence, happened to be one of them. Dark's legacy began with (among one or two other titles) the very first New Wave Hookers, released in 1985 and starring none other than Ginger Lynn in her pornographic prime. It was a landmark movie that was at once, bizarre, sexy, and just plain fascinating from the standpoint of offering something different. The series continued, and it wasn't long before its medium moved from film to video, but that didn't mean Dark lost any of his sense of craft in the process. New Wave Hookers #4 features a cast that most porn fans of my generation will absolutely salivate over. Juli Ashton, Chasey Lain, Nicole Lace, Tammi Ann--these are beautiful, electrifying performers in their own ways, and at a time when their porn careers were still relatively young. Add to that the effort and talent of actually creating much more than a simple video documentary of the nastiest acts you can get away with (the very style that inundates us today), and you've got yourself the type of porn movie that people just don't make anymore. Enough of my blathering, though. I'm anxious to get re-acquainted with some of my favorite past starlets, and with Dark's uniquely bizarre, but still somehow glorifying vision of kinky sex, integrated music, and gutsy visuals that make his catalog of movies so obstinately relevant, 10 and even 20 years after their initial release.

Juli Ashton, Amanda Adams, Tony Tedeschi, Nick East After a somewhat interesting opening credits sequence where we are introduced to most of the girls we're about to see (and they all do look beautifully nummy, I must say), we're in a car with a midget. Yes. A midget. Don't get too excited though--his is a non-sex role, but this kind of thing is par for the Dark course in terms of his strange approach to pornography. Apparently, this midget is trolling for whores. When he finds three of them, one of them being the delectable Juli Ashton, something odd happens. He makes her disappear. She reappears in his mansion, wearing sheer black stockings and a classy burgundy jacket with flower-dy panties hidden underneath. The midget goes on to describe where she finds herself, and the other elements of the scene are introduced through a series of dissolves: two men in clown suits, and a big titted women playing with a rubber ball. Intrigued aren'tcha? The guitar laden rock music starts, and before you know it, Julie is sucking on the clown-cock (which at first is inexplicably rubber, but then shortly turns into living flesh). Since I have had the privilege of seeing the original release of this movie, I notice that on the DVD there are a few differences. One of them (I think--but I'm not positive) is that you actually do get to hear some of the performers' voices here. Another that I'm absoultely sure about is a conspicuous absence of some of the sound effects that were in the original release. I'm not sure why VCA decided make these changes. The good news, of course, is that no one who hasn't seen the original release will know anything has changed, but, being one of my nostalgic favorites for whatever reason, I've seen this scene so many times, I pretty well know it backwards and forwards. The changes to the audio track bother me. On the plus side however, the video transfer is superb. The picture is flawless and easily on par with, or even exceeding most of the production values of today's best video releases. That all said, Juli gets all of the clown-cock attention in this scene, and believe me, it's well deserved. Amanda is pretty well there as superfluous masturbating eye-candy, but the real story of this scene is Juli Ashton's incredible eyes. She gets fingered, fucked with rubber cocks, and even a bizarre squirt-gun/dildo mutation, but not to worry gentle traditionalists, she gets plenty of real cock as well. She takes it in the ass, and God does she look just gorgeous doing it. Her hair is perfectly mussed. Her eyes are angelic, and the skillful editing of this economical scene is something I wish we could see a lot more of today. Alas. Finally Julie takes two facials, and shares the second one with Amanda. The music in the background has a beginning, middle and end, and actually wraps up at the conclusion of the scene with a climax as if it was planned that way! God forbid that elements like this should be so well executed in a porn movie of all things. All in all, this is an outstandingly crafted scene that really is wonderfully interesting to watch without losing too much of the nastiness and immediacy that real sex has to offer. Make no mistake, this is not gonzo "reality" porn by any stretch, but it offers something more aesthetically sophisticated instead. It's actually INTERESTING in more ways than just the "Wow they're actually doing that" factor that seems to be the cornerstone of what most people call "good porn" today. Besides that, Juli is a fuckin' hottie, and I don't remember her ever looking better than she did in front of Greg Dark's lens. For much more Darkian hijinks featuring Juli Ashton, I highly recommend Devil in Miss Jones #5.

Chasey Lain, Vixxen, Tom Byron, T.T. Boy, Vince Voyeur This is Chasey Lain in her pre-Vivid prime. She has a gorgeous body, but make no mistake, her eyes are simply out of this world. At any rate, our midget friend starts philosophizing about the nature of exchanging sex for money and the various forms the "prostitute" can take. He begins with the most basic example of Chasey as a hooker--negotiating her price. While she makes herself up in front of a mirror, three men magically appear to proposition her. The first is Tom Byron as a sort of Muslim trader. He offers her a pig's head for 10 minutes of her time, which she refuses. Next is Vince Voyeur in similar garb offering her a skinned chicken, which she again balks at. Third times a charm when T.T. Boy and Vixxen show up dressed in dirty biker garb and he offers her $100 cash to fuck all four of them. Chasey gets this fantastic "I'm a total fuckin' whore" look on her face, and thus the negotiation in successful. Once again, there is heavy editing here, but it's not done in an annoying way. It's done in a way that economizes the scene. Chasey is fucked first with a strap on courtesy of Vixxen, while she sucks on the men's cocks. Eventually she is fucked by all three men, and Vixxen gets some attention as well. Most of the focus remains on Chasey, and you'll hear no complaint from me, as she is just fucking beautiful to watch. There's no anal, and again the scene is relatively short by today's standards and edited in a strange and interesting way. Eventually all the guys unload their cum on Chasey's stomach and tits. This one has a little more fire than Juli's scene, thanks largely to T.T. Boy's enthusiasm, but for me it lacked in other areas. At any rate, it bears repeating that Chasey is absolutely gorgeous here, and that alone makes her and her sinful cohorts worth the screen time.

Nicole Lace, Tammi Ann, Tom Byron, Vince Voyeur The midget continues his somewhat vacant discussion of women's relationships with sex and money, and we discover that Jon Dough is a psychiatrist of some sort who is monitoring the midget's ramblings. The midget starts discussing the difference between male and female fantasy and that leads us into a totally warped "Cinderella" vignette that honestly has nothing to do with "Cinderella". Nicole Lace and Tammi Ann are two of my long time favorite performers. For one thing, they're both so damned cute, I can't stand it--with the small titties and the pretty smiles and the petite bodies. God DAMN! Total MLyons fuck-fantasy material. For another thing, though, Tammi specifically is a real sexual go-getter. She did some really wonderful work during her pornographic stint, and any of you younger viewers who haven't seen her work, I would definitely recommend picking up one or two of her titles. That said, this particular scene isn't her best, and neither is it Nicole's best. They both look absolutely beautiful, don't get me wrong, but the sex and the way its presented here just doesn't do justice to what these two girls were really capable of. Regardless, Tammi looks fuckin' great getting fucked up the ass, and although I can't verify for sure, I think Nicole gets it up the ass here as well. Don't hold me to that. For a better Dark Brothers scene with Nicole (and some guaranteed ass fucking), I would have to once again point you to Devil in Miss Jones #5, but I digress. After some nice eye-candy sex, both guys cum on Nicole's luscious booty and Tammi enthusiastically licks it up. In a sexual capacity, this scene is just ok, but I'm tellin' ya, these girls are just so damned cute. There was certainly enough hardcore action and visual stimulation here to keep my perverted, panty-sniffer fantasies amply fueled.

Barbara Doll, Marc Wallice, Nick East While Half-Pint, as the midget is now called, yammers away into his mirror, Jon Dough continues yammering away into his tape recorder. He describes another Half-Pint delusion in which a pretty blonde (Barbara Doll) is evidently training some rubber-clad men behaving as seals. It's as weird as it sounds, and let me just add... weirdly sexy as well. The "seals", although at first more interested in tossing a red rubber ball back and forth, soon turn their attentions to Barbara who starts to strip and tease for them. She is quite wonderful looking, and eventually the three way romp begins. She sucks cock, gets fucked and finally takes a DP before taking two badly aimed facials. Just a little note about Marc Wallice: For reasons of my own, I boycott Simon Wolf productions because of what I believe is an ongoing association with Marc Wallice. I do not extend that boycott to scenes Marc Wallice performed in prior to 1998 because I believe that is going too far, and punishing the wrong people. Some people feel strongly enough about him not to be able to divorce his performances from his alleged misdeeds, and therefore refuse to watch any scene he's in. I respect that, and for that reason, wanted to make a special note about his presence in this movie.

Sandi Beach, Jewel, Jon Dough Jon Dough continues his yammering on about Half-Pint's possible psychosis, but even as we watch, the doctor's own psychosis becomes more apparent. The word "ribbit" keeps finding its way into his monologue and we find that his feet have inexplicably turned a scaly green. For whatever reason, two hottie-hot nurses decide that he's still worth talking to in this state and tell him it's "play time". He decides he wants to play "frog", whatever that means. No matter--they retire to a hospital bed where Jon proceeds to fuck these two gorgeous ladies like he's got a pair. For some reason the music fades out in the middle of the fucking, and the scene, although nicely shot, seems a bit draggy at times. It's more reminiscent of today's all-sex romps than the other scenes have been thus far. Once again, no matter--I'm not complaining, and Jewel's ass (this isn't Jewel Denyle for those who might be wondering) is especially fetching here. Truly, both girls look fuckin' great, and by the end (which comes after a tiny bit of anal toy play for Jewel) Jon comes in his own hand and the girls swoop in to lick up his spunk. It's another really nice scene, with another wonderful feast for the eyes. These girls are simply gorgeous, and looking their best. |

Yvonne & Marc Davis; Chasey Lain & Misty Rain; Marilyn Martin, Marc Wallice, T.T. Boy, Nick East & Tony Tedeschi Although described as an orgy by Mr. Half-Pint, this is more correctly described as three separate scenes happening simultaneously. Yvonne (of early Seymour Butts and Shane's World fame) and Marc Davis are one pair at the bottom of the stairs, Chasey Lain and Misty Rain get jiggy with it on the staircase itself, and Marilyn Martin takes on all comers, two at a time on the second floor. The women here aren't quite as drop dead gorgeous as those on the rest of the disc, although Chasey is here, and Misty Rain is looking damn fine. In truth, even though I tend to avoid girl-girl scenes, their pairing is the most interesting to me in this case. They just look beautiful, and there's something intimate and wonderful about how they are shot that injects a little extra immediacy to the scene. I don't know what it is. At any rate, Misty gets some anal courtesy of a rubber toy that Chasey stuffs into her butt, but for most of the more nasty behavior, you have to look to the other two girls. Yvonne and Marc have a rather average pairing with some anal, and she looks pretty good. Marilyn is certainly the most ambitious, taking two sets of two guys, complete with two brief DPs before most of their cum lands on her face. It's a haze of debauchery, but probably because of the number of players, and the segmented way in which it is presented, it did a little less for me than the rest of the disc did. Ah well, it's hard to complain too much when the quality of production has been so consistently high. After the sexual festivities are over, we briefly return to the three hookers that were propositioning Half-Pint by his car. Juli magically reappears, and all three girls fling midget-maligning insults at him before he tells them that he needs to go back to the "other side". Whatever. That's about as lucid an explanation as the movie gives, so I can't give you any more than that. Regardless of how wacky and car-crashy the ending is, at least I have some nice memories of some gorgeous girls, some bizarre images, some pretty damn decent production values, and some hot sex to boot.

OVERALL: There's too much ugliness in today's world, too much pain, too much pessimism and disregard for the ideas of empowerment and celebration of life. Today's porn, unfortunately, faithfully echoes this woeful lack of balance and ugly indifference we all seem to be caught up in. While I certainly wouldn't go so far as to cite New Wave Hookers #4 as a celebration of life by any stretch, it at least has some of the wonderful, back-to-basic elements and production savvy that so many of today's pornographers honestly don't seem to give a rats ass about. To me, and maybe this is just me--it matters. It's not a life changing movie. In fact, it doesn't have much going for it at all in terms of the traditional narrative style, but by gum it has three key ingredients that make it stand out now, just as it did ten years ago when it was released: beautiful women, beautiful sex, and honest-to-goodness, passionate originality. It's definitely not Dark's best work, and although VCA's DVD treatment looked stunning in the video department, it could have done with some more extras, and less glitches in the transfer. I have to say, though, that having watched this, I'm finding myself nostalgic enough to grab a couple more Dark Brothers classics, and maybe revisit my infatuations with Nicole Lace and Tammi Ann. I expect that'll be a nice stroll down memory lane as well--porn with a little less brutality and sex with a little less jaded indifference. In the last ten years, we really seem to have so over-saturated ourselves with sex (complete in all its most extreme forms) that it's hard to find the simple reality of it truly amazing anymore. It's really a shame. Well. Anyway--assuming I can keep my optimistic "wits" about me, here's to 50 more reviews. Thanks for reading. Until next time... |
