The Movie |
Mixed Signals is a movie from writer and director Bree Mills for Pure Taboo. The majority of the movies at Pure Taboo fall somewhere in between the short film designation and the feature film designation. Based on the run time, the movies are feature films, however, based on the content the movies are short films. Either way you classify the movies from Pure Taboo, Bree Mills is good at what she does.
The design of Mixed Signals is the standard design that most of Pure Taboo's movies have. There is a significant plotted opening, followed by the sex scene, with a quick wrap-up to the movie. The plot for Mixed Signals is that Aaron (Jake Adams) meets his step-sister Alexis (Kenna James). He is shy, awkward, and doesn't have any sexual experience. He overhears her talking on the phone and misunderstands her actions, resulting in him coming on to her.
Much of Mixed Signals success comes from the lead actor Jake Adams. While all aspects of the movie are essential for the end movie to come out right, Jake Adams' portrayal of Aaron is the critical performance. Aaron has to come across as an awkward virgin for the scene to work and, from his performance, no one would guess that Jake Adams had well over 75 scenes in the adult movie industry prior to shooting Mixed Signals.
The praise for Jake Adams' performance isn't to lessen the performance that Kenna James gives as all the acting in the movie is excellent, and Kenna James does a great job as Aaron's step-sister Alexis. The two have a great sex scene as well, which is what takes up the bulk of the runtime for Mixed Signals.
The story is well done, although one does question why a company named Pure Taboo is sticking with the step-sibling level instead of just going all the way to characters that are siblings. The movie is just fantasy, the cast isn't actually related, and siblings are more taboo than step-siblings. However, the step-sibling stories seem to be what is popular in the industry right now so Pure Taboo is going with the crowd.
As with Pure Taboo's other productions, and Gamma Films productions in general, Mixed Signals looks really nice. The movie contains excellent locations and sets and is beautifully shot. Despite Mixed Signals not going all the way on the taboo scale, the movie is still worth watching for fans of the vignette-style feature movies.
The Edition |
The edition of Mixed Signals screened is the streaming and download edition available on PureTaboo.com. Pure Taboo has done an excellent job with their streaming and download edition of Mixed Signals. Mixed Signals was shot digitally and is presented in the anamorphic widescreen aspect ratio of 1.78:1 in 1080p. The image for Mixed Signals is beautiful with a crystal clear picture and no issues whatsoever. The colors in the movie are great. There is a PureTaboo bug in the bottom right-hand corner of the screen throughout the movie.
Mixed Signals is presented with an English Stereo audio track. As with the video, the audio quality is impeccable with clear, easy to understand dialog and nice fine background details. There weren't any issues noticeable with the audio.
Pure Taboo hasn't included any extras with their streaming and download edition of Mixed Signals.
Final Thoughts |
Bree Mills' movies for Pure Taboo often combine excellent photography, great acting, a good story, excellent locations, and a good sex scene and Mixed Signals is no different. Mixed Signals falls in between a short film and a feature film in content; however, Mixed Signals is definitely not just a sex scene. Viewers who go in expecting a full feature will find Mixed Signals lacking; however, Mixed Signals is an excellent short film and well worth watching. Pure Taboo has done an excellent job with their streaming and download version on PureTaboo.com with excellent video and audio quality.
