The Movie

Midnight is a softcore dramedy short film from writer and director T.R. Wilkinson. Midnight explores the concept of open relationships or, more specifically, open relationships going wrong. The story has Shane (Brent Corrigan) who wants a month of having an open relationship with his boyfriend Aiden (Anderson Goncalves) for his birthday. When the month is over, Aiden ends the open relationship agreement, however, Shane isn't so willing to give it up and their relationship starts falling apart.

Midnight is an odd short movie in that it almost feels like it is two movies compressed into one. The beginning of the movie is lighthearted and comedic whereas the second half has a drastic change in mood and becomes a drama. The shift is, honestly, jarring possibly due to the fact that the movie exists in such a short time frame there isn't enough transitional time.

Midnight uses a neat storytelling technique showing much of the short movie in split screen, one side being Shane and the other side being Aiden, as the relationship is falling apart. This storytelling technique allows the viewer to see what emotions both Shane and Aiden are going through at the different points in the story that the movie opts to show the viewer. There neither any nudity nor any graphic sex within the short movie used as part of the storytelling technique.

Midnight is definitely worth a watch, despite the jarring shift in the tone of the movie. The story is interesting and the cast does a good job with their roles. Be sure to watch for stand-up comedian Suzanne Whang who is great in her all too short but highly amusing role.

The Edition

The edition of Midnight screened is the streaming-only edition available on NakedSword. NakedSword Film Works has done a nice job with their streaming-only edition of Midnight. Midnight looks like it was shot digitally and is presented in the anamorphic widescreen aspect ratio of 1.78:1 in 720p. There aren't any noticeable issues with the video quality presented and the colors in the movie look beautiful.

Midnight is presented with an English Stereo audio track. The audio for Midnight sounds nice with no noticeable blemishes. The dialog in the short movie is clear and easy to understand at all times.

NakedSword Film Works hasn't included any extras for this release.

Final Thoughts

Midnight has been released by NakedSword through their NakedSword Film Works (NSFW) division that was launched in 2016 to exhibit gay independent movies that aren't exactly pornographic yet aren't exactly mainstream. Midnight is an interesting short movie that shifts from being a comedy to a drama mid-pace while telling the story of a relationship gone wrong. Midnight features a great cast and an interesting story and is worth watching. NakedSword Film Works has done a nice job with their streaming-only edition of Midnight on NakedSword.com with nice audio and video.
