Director: Kristen Bjorn
Have you ever wondered what it's like on the set on a porno movie? God knows I have. For some reason, I always assumed porno sets were nonstop parties, where guys just showed up and had amazing sex in front of the cameras. But you'll quickly see from watching Making it... that isn't the case at all. During the filming of Wet Dreams Part 1 and 2, Kristen hired someone to hang out on the set, and capture the whole porn process on tape. Making it with Kristen Bjorn is made up of behind the scenes footage of all 8 scenes from the Wet Dreams videos, as well as interviews with many of the models. The behind-the-scenes footage is very interesting, and contains pretty much everything you would expect: naked guys hanging around, warming up before the shoot, taking breaks, goofing off, bloopers, photo shoots, etc... The actual footage is great, however Kristen's narration is kind of dry. Kristen's voice is rather monotone, and comes off as very scripted. The interviews are a little bit on the dull side, too. Every guy is asked the same exact questions: What is it like to make a porno video? What is the best thing about making a porno video? What is the worst thing about making a porno video? How do you define yourself sexually? When was your first sexual experience with another man, and how was it? If your best friend wanted to make a porno video, what would be your advice? Is there anything about you that you would like your fans to know? Those who answer identify themselves as “straight” generally are also asked: How is it possible for a straight man to perform in a gay video? Other than that, there are absolutely no follow up questions, whatsoever. It would have been nice if they probed these guys a little deeper. (Especially the straight ones... they usually had the shortest answers). Be prepared for some depressing answers, too. Some of the replies to the “What is the worst thing about making a porno?” include “when I have to suck dick”, “getting fucked”, and “making love to a man”. I don't mind that these guys identify themselves as straight, but to come out and say they hated having sex with other men is kind of a slap in the face. How are we supposed to enjoy watching them have sex, when we know they weren't enjoying it themselves? Another problem I had with Making it... was there was no conclusion. After the behind the scenes stuff from the eighth scene, the movie just ends. I was expecting some kind of wrap-up from Kristen, or maybe some shots of the editing process. It just seems like it's missing something at the end. Audio/Visual Quality The video quality does vary quite a bit (depending on what type of camera they are using, I guess) but it is always watchable. Extras There aren't any extras here, though I can't really blame them for that. What would they have included? A behind-the-scenes look at the making of Making it? Final Word With all that said, I did still enjoy Making it with Kristen Bjorn. The guys were all gorgeous, and I did gain a lot of insights about all the hard work involved in making porn. But make no mistake, Making it... does have a number of faults. If you are expecting something with the quality of a Dateline expose, you'll probably be a bit disappointed. However, it's 1 of only 2 full-length behind-the-scenes gay movies available, so if you're interested in seeing what it takes to film a porno, by all means, check it out. I just question the replay value of it. Once you've seen it, there really isn't any reason to go back and watch it again.
