The Movie

Some congratulations are in order for Jim Powers' favorite nubile sorority girl Kelly, she has apparently somehow made it to her sophomore year. It only took her nine volumes of this series to get there. While it is never explicitly stated that she is a sophomore, Kelly (Allysin Chaynes) talks about her friend Kate (Kate Frost), who was in her pledge class and dropped out after her freshman year.

But Kelly's grade problems appear to be far from over. Dean Powers (in a mention to director Jim Powers I assume since this character is never seen nor heard) tells Kelly that she needs to get her GPA up or she would be suspended from the Pi Pi sorority and possibly expelled from school. Kelly though is more concerned over whether her friend Jason (Jason McCain) wants to date her.

Jim Powers seriously needs to come up with a new idea for this series beyond poor grades. He has used this concept ad nauseam. If all he can think of every few volumes or so is Kelly's grades, then he really needs to retire the series. Then again, this series has been rather tired from the second volume on, so it is probably time that he retires this series anyway.

By this volume, the TKE frat boys are definitely out and the Kappa frat boys are the new squeezes of the Pi Pi sorority. Not that the name that Powers assigns the frat house du jour really matters much anyway. No matter what name Powers attaches to the frat in the movie, most of the frat boys are depicted by the same set of actors.

Powers has shot some of the exterior footage at a fraternity row somewhere, which does add to the mood of the movie. However, he is getting looser on using collegiate locations. During Kelly's extended dream sequence where she thinks about the ramifications of being expelled from State University an L.A. rooftop is used quite a bit. The entire dream sequence seems more like a way to stick in random sex scenes without having to worry about them making sense in the plot and utilize potentially cheaper shooting locations. Powers is very sloppy with his continuity within the movie as well. For instance, at the end Kelly's school book — which looks an awful lot like a dictionary — is red when she is in a room, but when she walks through the door into the hallway the book magically turns white.

While it is hard to classify any of this series as actually good, Kelly the Coed — Part 9 is definitely on the bottom rungs of the series.

The Edition

Heatwave has done their standard job with this release. Kelly the Coed — Part 9 is presented in the full screen aspect ratio of approximately 1.33:1. The picture contains glitches in the video and shows the limitations of the original video masters. The movie begins with phone sex adverts which can be skipped. Strangely, the building exterior that was blurred in Kelly the Coed — Part 6: Double Secret Probation is shown here without the blurring. Kelly the Coed — Part 9 is presented with an English Dolby Digital 2.0 Stereo track, which works for the material being presented. There are only two extras on the disc, one that has to do with the feature movie. There is a photogallery [sic] and an extra called “Bonus Content,” which is a bunch of clips from unnamed Heatwave titles in various categories. This extra is exactly the same as the one from the release of Kelly the Coed — Part 8: Pi Pi Pussy.

Final Thoughts

Kelly the Coed — Part 9 is one of the lower points within this series that doesn't set the bar very high. The sex scenes aren't bad, but the story is worse than normal. Even fans of the series might want to consider passing on this one.
