The Movie |
Kelly the Coed 3 was originally the first movie within the Kelly the Coed film series to not feature Allysin Chaynes as Kelly. Originally in this entry Teri Starr portrayed Kelly in this poor entry into the already out of steam series. The DVD version for the movie features additional material, never shot originally for this entry, added in so that Allysin Chaynes would appear as Kelly, still leaving Starr's Kelly within the movie.
The “plot” in so far as it goes has Kelly (voice of Starr) still a freshman and finals are coming up. What follows is a series of sex scenes not really tied together or into any coherent plot at all. Sadly the newer footage inserted into the movie makes the attempt at a plot even less coherent since when Kelly (as Chaynes) first appears her dialog indicates that she is sophomore despite earlier dialog (from Starr) stating that she is a freshman. The final scene with Chaynes and Nick East is just jammed onto the end of the movie, without even attempting a reason why it is there. The intrusion of this new footage makes the movie look like a clumsier effort than it originally was.
Not that the movie was great to begin with. The charm that the first entry had has been lost at this point in the series and the concept has been played out as far as Jim Powers being able to pull it off as fresh. The continuity of the series was already flying out the door even before the new footage. In this entry Herschel Savage plays Mr. Goldberg, looking exactly like he did in the last entry playing Professor Schwartz. It seems very lazy for Powers to already be hiring the same actors for different characters for only the third round in the series. Another noticeable mistake is the basketball team is one member short of being able to actually play a game.
It is interesting to note that while there are still collegiate and frat house locations used for the movie, the entry subtitled Campus Life features the least amount of footage shot at a campus so far in the series.
The female cast, for the most part, looks good and the sex scenes are decently shot. Unfortunately though Powers is still clinging to the fact that Kelly the Coed was very successful and is at this point just trying to suck in every dollar that he can off the name.
The Edition |
This release from Heatwave is lacking, but not so much as to be unsuitable. Kelly the Coed 3 is presented in the full screen aspect ratio of 1.33:1. The image contains video glitches and portions where it looks like the bit rate was set too low as the image becomes blocky and pixelated. Some of the scenes appear softer in some footage than others. The color seems off from some footage as well. Kelly the Coed 3 is presented with an English 2.0 Dolby Digital Stereo track which works for the material being presented here. Heatwave has only included the 2000 altered cut of the movie and has not included the original 1999 cut of the movie on the disc. The movie starts with about eight minutes of phone sex adverts, which are happily skippable but makes the disc look cheap.
Heatwave has included a few extras on the disc. There is an almost ten minute behind the scenes feature, which might be more interesting than the actual movie. There is a meet the stars piece, with video footage, photos, and text information for each of the female stars. “Kelly at Her Best” is a series of compilations of Allysin Chaynes from various Kelly the Coed ventures edited together for various sex acts.
The disc also features multiple angles for the sex scenes, which offers two different angles for the different shots of the sex scenes. Overall this isn't the most useful feature.
If you like the movie, you could do much worse than this disc. However, the less than stellar picture quality and phone sex adverts crammed in wherever there was space will leave you wishing for a better edition. And be warned, if you are looking for the version you remember from VHS, that isn't going to be found on this release.
Final Thoughts |
Kelly the Coed 3 is the lowest entry so far of the Kelly the Coed adult movie series. The charm that the first movie pulled off has been lost here. The movie is further hampered by newer footage being added to the movie for this release. The DVD itself is lacking with a less than stellar picture and tons of phone sex adverts.
