Katsumi's Dirty Deeds Review

I'm classifying this one as a feature but the limited plotline and dialogue here suggests a more vignette oriented flick.  Lately I've been noticing that the distinction between genres has been getting less and less clear cut.  This is a good thing- it means that creativity and innovation is in bloom.  But if you've seen Manuel's Mindfuck, you can expect similar results here except that the production values are taken one step further:  This movie uses feature style lighting- lighting which casts shadows and renders out body shapes.  It's also shot in widescreen- very capably by Manuel and friends.  You won't see the usual fluid camerawork used in Manuel's gonzo titles (being limited by the lighting) but Dirty Deeds presents a better compromise towards this rawer approach than the feature-based studios.  Speaking of feature-based studios, Manuel outdoes a lot of their work in the lighting/camerawork department!  This is saying a lot I think.       

The story of Dirty Deeds is this:  Katsumi has an obsession with Manuel and fantasizes about him while watching his porn scenes.  She falls asleep one night and has a visceral dream where she confronts him in a mystical lair.  Katsumi confesses her need for Manuel: "I want to make love to you," she says, thus setting up the sole conflict of the story.  But see, in order for her to get to Manuel, she must fuck all his friends first...  Porn 101 for ya. 

This setup provides the perfect vehicle for Katsumi.  Katsumi fans rejoice because she's in all six of the movie's sex scenes, playing an active role in five and a voyeuristic role in the other.  First up is a solo masturbation scene which is closely followed by Katsumi being paired with Vicky Vette against Michael Stefano.  A six-guy blowbang comes next, and then she is forced to watch her obsession Manuel fuck his harem of superbabes-  Karina Kay, Rita Faltoyano, Jada Fire, and Victoria Von Helkine.  Next up for Katsumi is a B/B/G scene where she's double-pistoned by Stefano and John Strong.  The big finish- as you would expect- is the passionate French stylings of Manuel and Katsumi.     

So what did I think of it?  As an overall package it was quite good.  I was mostly impressed by the camerawork and lighting but there's also some great creative elements at play here.  Manuel has a strong vision and has no problems fleshing it out into full realization.  The sex was good but to me there often seemed to be long stretches of action where the energy would trail off.  But then again, I'm not exactly the biggest Katsumi fan either; I thought the other girls would be featured more but they only have that one orgy scene with Manuel and then there's Vicky with Katsumi in the second scene.  Coincidently, I thought the Vicky scene was the strongest of the bunch.  Overall, a strong movie by Manuel.  He's definitely one to keep an eye on if he pursues this direction toward features.
