The Technical Stuff

Audio /Video Quality: The technical aspects are pretty good. The audio is clear and well balanced, but there are a few places where music is the only audio due to the video being slowed down to help with the mood. The video is presented in anamorphic widescreen and looks very nice. It's clear with some very good care put into the lighting as well as smooth camera work.

Music: The music is all over the place. It's occasionally soft and well balanced with the rest of the audio, but most of the time it completely dominates the audio and doesn't fit with the action at all.

Menus: The main menu combines a little animation with a few stills for an okay first impression. The chapter menu shows some nice care, and lets you choose a scene based on a small clip of each scene as well as the name of the girl in it.

The Feature

Guys are turning up dead after being choked with a black scarf. Cop Dino Bravo is sure that Brooke Banner is the one doing it, but when they bring her in she's far from cooperative with him or his fellow cops. She seems to know just what they do and don't know about her, and isn't afraid to taunt them about their ineptitudes.

This is an above average scene. I love the ass eating opening and Mariah and Steven seem to be into each other very well and put out plenty of energy. My problem here is the music and editing. The music is overly loud and definitely held back the opening of the scene. The editing was a touch on the artistic side, and interrupted the flow of the scene without offering any real artistic benefit. Mariah and Steven do a nice job here, but there was plenty of work from behind the camera that never let their scene get as far as it might have.

There's also a nice pace to the scene with the camera work being simple but effective. This is a nicely done scene and easily one of the best in the movie.

Brunette Rachel heads home with Niko next, where they kiss and play around a little before Niko lays back on a bed and lets Rachel free him from his pants so she can blow him. After arguing with raven tressed snitch Victoria, she offers to make it up to him with her skills. This is an okay scene. Victoria puts out the ass extremely well and has nice chemistry with Tommy. The problem here is the music, which gets very hard and extremely loud. This really interfered with the sex for me, and took what should have been a darn hot scene and held it back to the average level instead. This is an okay scene that should have been much hotter than it was.

Dino finally gives in to Brooke's taunting and moves in to fuck her. He goes right to fucking her missionary style as she lays back in the interrogation chair before letting her get on her knees so he can take her from behind. They go back to fucking missionary style before busting a nut on her face.

This is another okay at best scene that is held back horribly by the music. The video style is a touch limited, but at the same time came off like a music video wannabe as it sacrificed the sex for the loud blaring music and a bit of fancy editing. Brooke and Dino do look like they're into the scene pretty well, but it's really hard to tell due to the music. This is another scene that should have been much better than it was.

Impulsive is a pretty average porn feature that basically takes five minutes from Basic Instinct in the interrogation room and turns it into an hour and a half porno. With the right performances that could easily work, and Brooke does a very nice job channeling Sharon Stone while Dino channels Joe Bob Briggs doing Michael Douglas for his role. The sex often shows potential, but through almost the entire movie the music killed the sex or held it back to around the average level by being overly loud, hard, and just plain not fitting the scenes. I was more than thankful to have a remote control handy through a lot of the movie for that reason, and it was used many times in frustration. Impulsive had potential, but its style killed its substance for me.

The Extra Stuff

The photo gallery lasts five minutes with about five seconds per very nice snapshot. Trailers are included for Possessed, Wicked Wives, Where There's Smoke, Southern Exxxposure, My Pleasure Pet, and Tied Up. There's also a bonus scene with an accompanying photo gallery and weblinks.

The bonus scene comes from Killer Klub Girlz. Kimberly sets out to seal a deal with Eric letting him know that she could really use a hard cock despite surrounding herself with beautiful women. There's something about Kimberly that rarely works, however, and although I can rarely put my finger on what it is it raised its head here as well. There's a pretty good balance through the sex, but Kimberly seemed a little cockshy during the blowjob and started the scene out a little weak for me. This isn't a bad scene, but it had a hard time making it too far past the average mark for me.

Currently, many Penthouse DVDs can be found online for between about $17 and $25 with several stores offering them for around $20. Rent this one first or aim very low. The movie has an okay idea and some decent performances, but the music goes so loud and overboard that it holds back most of the movie. The technical aspects show some nice care for the video, and there's a touch of effort put into the extras with a bonus scene. Impulsive could have been a hot feature, but turns into a fairly forgettable release due to its style.

Note to Penthouse: It's nice to see you try to mix things up a bit artistically, and I hope you're more successful with it in the future.
