Review:
Consumed by feelings of grief, guilt and betrayal, a young writer (Aiden Ashley) finds herself quickly losing both her career and her mind, as visions of her deceased wife (Anna Claire Clouds) haunt her every moment. Whether these apparitions end up being real or merely substance-induced hallucinations remains to be seen...and sets the stage for events to come. So goes Hysteria, a very good 2022 release from newly-returned director Stormy Daniels and Wicked Pictures.
Featuring two volcanic sex scenes (a beautifully-captured Anna / Aiden coupling in their marital bed and a bathroom bang-out involving Anna and a diabolical neighbor, Seth Gamble) and two solid sequences (Aiden's agent, Casey Calvert, with her psychiatrist, Chris Cock, and Charly Summer with Anna's onscreen brother, Ryan Driller), this release delivers well on the sex. Indeed, Aiden and Anna are in top form throughout, turning in scorching performances, while Seth is a true standout, as always.
The acting follows suit, with Aiden Ashley once again demonstrating her supreme theatrical chops--as she does feature-upon-feature and year-after-year--and with the remainder of the cast supporting her exceptionally well. Indeed, Aiden plays to perfection the part of a bereft and visibly distraught young widow who's quickly losing control of her life and her emotions. The strain and duress under which she's struggling are palpable and raw as events unfold. Kudos!
Plot-wise, the storyline is gripping and intense and builds momentum early on, as it transitions from scene to scene. The overall concept and execution are also strong, with the only possible drawback being that the ending wraps up a touch too quickly, and it feels as though some of the narrative seeds that were sown don't fully get a chance to develop. A "to be continued..." mechanism, followed up by a sequel may have worked well here, as may have an episodic approach. Regardless, this is ultimately relatively small stuff, and the feature crowd will definitely be pleased with this one...particularly if it's watched during this the "Spooky Season". Be sure to check it out! It's a winner!
