Initial Expectations: Although her movies started out very slow for me, I’ve really been digging Celeste’s movies lately. With Jana and Jesse anchoring this one I can’t help but have high expectations!

Initial Reaction: Jana and Jesse both look fantastic, but this one didn’t work quite as well for me as many of their other movies.

The Technical Stuff

Audio /Video Quality: As usual with Digital Playground, the technical aspects are handled extremely well. As with all of Celeste’s movies, there’s no audio from the performers with music taking all of the audio. The video is very well presented in anamorphic widescreen, and looks fantastic. The lighting isn’t always bright, but there is some very nice attention paid to it and it did work for me in every scene. The camera work is nicely handled, and never gave me a feeling of being sloppy or having any problems to interfere with the action.

Music: The audio is solid music, which means the music must be pretty darn good to hold the movie together. Thankfully, it is. It’s a bit heavy on the dance and porno feel at times, but also came across as being darn sexy and worked very well for me.

Menus: The main menu nicely works through a few quick clips of the movie to settle into a very nice still of Jana with the boxcover. The chapter menu is sadly generic, and just lets you choose a scene based on a small clip of each scene and a chapter number. I can’t help but echo the thought in Den’s review wondering how much effort it takes to include each star’s name under the scenes or how Celeste would have liked it when she was performing if people loved her scene in one of her movies but had no clue which performer she was to see more of her.

The Feature

Hot Rod For Sinners collects eleven scenes with Jana Cova and or Jesse Jane. There’s never anything to tie the scenes together, although a couple of the scenes feel like they might be continuations of others.

Scene 1 - Jade Starr, Jana Cova, Kelly Kline, and Marco Duato

As Marco and pale brunette Jade kick back in a cherry red mid-fifties convertible, blonde Jana and brunette Kelly show up sharing a flask while wearing nice black dressed with red scarfs and accents. Jana gives Kelly a taste from the flask as she gropes her tits and turns her around to feel her ass before inviting the others to come join them. This scene leaves me with mixed feelings. I love how the scene starts and how Jana invites Marco and Jade to join in working on Kelly. The scene keeps right on going very well, and even manages to mix in a little playful darkness with the drunk feeling of the theme with Jana and the flask. Kelly gets into everybody working on her nicely, and puts out a nice blowjob. My problem is with the end of the scene. First, I’m always disappointed with a scene when there’s no popshot. To Celeste’s credit, it doesn’t even look like she has Marco try to fake one with Kelly. My other problem is the dark ending leaving Kelly passed out. This just did nothing for me, and made the scene end with me wondering what the heck was with it. That’s never a good way to finish a scene, and it brought it down quite a bit for me.

Scene 2 - Jana Cova and Valentina Vaughn

Jana returns wearing only a pair of pink panties and blood red lipstick giving sexy brunette Valentina, who’s wearing a tied of white tied off shirt, black and white polka dotted panties, sexy black and white shoes, and the same blood red lipstick a little show in what appears to be a warehouse. This is another scene that leaves me with mixed feelings. Due to the photo shoot feel, the chemistry comes and goes throughout the scene, but there’s also a feeling of longing between the girls that I really like. You’re never sure if they’re just putting on a show for the cameras or if they cameras are almost getting in the way of their play. Regardless, Jana and Valentina put on a great show that part of me really, really liked. At the same time, I’m also a little lost for the scene because I have no idea what it has to do with the hot rod car idea that the cover puts forward or the sinners from the title. This is a pretty good scene, but the artistic stylings of it might get in the way for some people.

Scene 3 - Jana Cova and Karlie Montana

Brunette Karlie starts out the next scene leaving somebody’s apartment wearing only a fur coat that’s half off, a black bikini top, shoes, and shiny capris that she hasn’t quite gotten on yet. She struts around a bit while waiting for the elevator looking like she’s expecting somebody else to come out of the open door. Soon after, Jana comes out in a black leather coat, lacy skirt, and bikini top and sneaks up behind her to put a knife to her throat, a hand to her ass, and a tongue to her ear. Although I have some reservations about this scene, I really, really liked it. My reservations come in with the knife to the throat, which gives the scene a dark start and makes it a scene I can see some skipping by because of. That said, it’s also done very well with Karlie looking nicely worried and Jana looking horny as hell. There’s great chemistry between the girls, and once Jana starts in on Karlie there’s little doubt as to whether or not she’s into it. Once again the camera work is a bit on the artistic side, but it’s definitely artistic done right. I really got into this scene even with the questionable knife to the throat, which works great for the sinner aspect of the title, but I was once again left wondering about the hot rod aspect...

Scene 4 - Jesse Jane and Scott Nails

Once again, the only problem with this scene is how it matches the hot rod idea, although the sinner idea comes across well.

Scene 5 - Jana Cova

The ending once again got a little dark and held back the rest of the scene, but I guess worked well for the sinner aspect of the title. As for the hot rod, who the heck knows.

Scene 7 - Jana Cova and Jesse Jane

This is a pretty good scene. I guess the smoking makes this a sinner scene, but as usual there’s no hot rod in sight. Jana and Jade have nice chemistry together, but the scene just didn’t work as well for me here as others did. Part of this is because the scene is just each girl takes her turn and the scene is done rather than working back and forth. A bigger part is that I couldn’t help but feel like I’d already watched this scene. No, Jana and Jade didn’t get it on like this earlier, but there’s been so much of Jana taking on just one girl that believe it or not, it started to get a little old here. Jana’s easily one of the most gorgeous women in adult film, so maybe this scene qualifies as too much of a good thing.

Scene 9 - Carli Banks and Jana Cova

It’s not a bad scene, it’s just feels too close to the other scenes.

Scene 10 - Jana Cova, Staci Thorn, and Marco Duato

This is an okay at best scene. It feels a bit rushed and soft, and neither the hot rod nor the sinner aspect shows up in it. Holly often feels like the center of attention, but there’s enough action towards Sammie that it just doesn’t feel that way. Jana also seems fairly ignored, which is a shame. This scene just didn’t work for me.

Hot Rod For Sinners was a hit or miss movie for me that often left me with mixed feelings. To start with, the hot rod aspect of the title, which is nicely joined with a picture of a sweet looking thirties street rod, barely ever shows up. There’s a car noise between each scene, but there’s only a car involved with two of the eleven scenes in the movie. The sinner aspect comes forward with many of the scenes, which involve alcohol, a knife to the throat, a toy gun, and more than a little domination. With the exception of the domination, these were all a bit disturbing to me even though most of them did add to the scenes and were handled well. I can see the knife turning some off, but at the same time Jana and Karlie’s scene was one of my favorites in the movie. My other problem with the cover is that Jana and Jesse are pretty much given equal billing. Although Jesse’s scenes were easily two of the best scenes in the movie, listing her there with Jana makes it look like they have pretty equal parts in the movie. I love watching Jana in action, who I think is easily one of the most beautiful women to ever be involved with adult film, but she’s in ten of the eleven scenes in the movie while Jesse only appears in two! With that kind of difference, it just doesn’t seem right to give them anywhere close to equal billing on the cover. As usual with Celeste there’s a heavily artistic feel combined with no music, which is a style that took a few movies to grow on me. Here, it started to grate on me a little again. The scenes are beautifully shot and have some nice chemistry, but it just got to be too much. Most of Celeste’s movies are an hour and a half long, and that seems perfect for them. At two hours with a heavy emphasis on Jana Cova getting it on with only one other girl, the movie started to drag for me and I even got out the remote. If you’re the type of person who only watches one scene in a sitting, then Hot Rod For Sinners may work extremely well for you if you can get into Celeste’s style. It does have a lot going for it with a great eye for beauty, sexy outfits, and the ability to blend art, beauty, and dark feelings. There’s also one heck of a good looking cast, with the exception of Marco Banderas and Jade Starr, whose looks just didn’t work for me even though they did each turn out some nice performances. Hot Rod For Sinners has some very well done artistic sex with some very well done dark edges, but it often seemed like it was stuck in a rut.

Currently, many of Digital Playground’s bigger releases can be found online for between about $18 and $28 with a few stores offering them for under $20. If you like artistic sex with an emphasis on all girl action and Jana Cova, this one should be well worth your money. The sex is soft but often has some good heat. The technical aspects are very well done and there’s even some effort put into the extras. This is a nicely done DVD.

Note to Digital Playground: The extended scenes were a very nice extra. I hope in the future you give the viewer the choice to watch the movie with them integrated into the movie or not instead of just offering them as an extra.
