Initial Expectations: I’m not a big barely legal movie fan, but the little I’ve seen of Robby D.’s recent stuff has been pretty darn good. I’m looking forward to this one.

The Technical Stuff

Audio /Video Quality: The technical aspects are nicely done for the most part. The audio is clear and very well balanced, but Robby’s voice does appear a couple times with one of them being extremely clear. There are also a few areas where the audio appears to be dubbed in. The video is also nicely done. Once again Digital Playground shows that it’s possible to give a great anamorphic widescreen transfer to an adult movie, and there’s barely even a hint of grain to it. There are a few minor shadows, but they’re never enough to cover things up or to interfere with the scene much.

Borderline False Advertising: Although Keri Sable gets second billing on the cover, she doesn’t appear in the movie itself.

Menus: The main menu nicely works through a few clips of the movie, which you can skip if you’d like, before settling on a nice still with a few of the girls. The chapter menu is very generic, and lets you choose a scene based on a small clip of each scene and a chapter number rather than giving you something meaningful like the name of the girl(s) in the scene.

The Feature

It appears that Jack turned his back a little too long, as Robby D has escaped from the closet Jack normally keeps him locked up in. With Hard Candy Robby goes with a vignette style, sometimes using a little story to lead into things, and sometimes just going with a bit of tease. The only thing that’s consistent is that the girls all appear to be barely legal.

Scene 1 - Nadia, Valery, and Scott Nails

This is a fantastic scene! Scene 2 - Riley Mason and Mick Blue

Mick starts things off dusting a piano and fake flowers while wearing a pink and blue striped shirt and jeans. As he continues to make sure things are just right around the room, Riley struts up in a cut off ribbed pink tank, black low riders, and black fuck-me shoes. He and Riley really look to be into each other, and it helped the scene to work extremely well for me. This is another very hot scene.

Scene 3 - Claire Robbins and Scott Nails

Cute short haired brunette Clair is next, who starts the middle scene out in turquoise hotpants and a white tank showing off her fantastic ass. There’s no setup, and Robby’s camera work has a different style that’s much more like his “Jack” stuff. Claire is also so submissive here that she shows almost no personality, which I think might be the main thing missing. This is a straightforward fuck scene, but it just doesn’t have the spark that makes the others so great. Surprisingly with the talent involved, this was the weakest scene in the movie to me.

Scene 4 - Leah Luv and Mick Blue

It once again has a little different feeling to it, but here the feeling is close enough to make the movie feel like it’s spreading out rather than being so far out in left field that it doesn’t feel like it belongs. Holly is darn cute, and helps to end Hard Candy on a high note.

Hard Candy is a very nice start for a new Robby D series. Robby works the barely legal aspect very well through the movie, with the opening scene between Nadia, Valery, and Scott easily blowing away the competition. Yes, Riley does put up a fight, but she’s the only one who comes close to the opening scene. Surprisingly, however, Claire’s scene left me more than a little disappointed, which I think is completely due to the style of the scene. That there is the biggest problem with Hard Candy. The feel varies a little throughout the movie, but the first two scenes were consistent enough that when it changed it left me feeling like something was wrong. Those two scenes were a fantastic blend of tease, humor, and sex, and I could have blown at any moment throughout either of those scenes. As the movie went on it gave me the feeling that Robby was searching for what was going to work for the movie, and with a production date that’s over a year and a half before the release date, I couldn’t help but wonder if the movie was so spread out that he wasn’t focused on what he wanted that well. That said, there’s enough good stuff here that I am very much looking forward to Hard Candy 2, and I can’t help but hope that it’ll go with the style that worked so darn well in the first two scenes. Hard Candy seems a little unfocused stylistically, but is still a hot movie that’s well worth checking out if you’re a fan of barely legal talent.

The photo gallery includes about three dozen very nice looking snapshots and full screen photos which you can either watch at your own pace or as a roughly three and a half minute photo gallery. Bonus Scene - Keri Sable

Currently, many of Digital Playground’s bigger releases can be found online for between about $18 and $28 with a few stores offering them for under $20. If you’re a fan of barely legal action, this one should work very well for you. The sex is hot and the barely legal aspect is handled very nicely. The video is great, but the audio had a few minor problems. There’s also some effort put into the extras, which was a nice change for Digital Playground. This is a pretty good DVD.

Note to Digital Playground: It’s great to see you bringing out footage you have from popular stars, but in the future, if you’re going to give those stars some of the top billings in the movie, please put it in the actual movie rather than making it a part of the extras. Billing like you gave Keri Sable here is going to make a lot of people go into the movie expecting much more than you’re offering, and that can lead to avoiding a company if it’s done a few times.
