Review:
The first installment of award-winning director Ricky Greenwood's latest feature extravaganza, Grinders, has dropped over at Adult Time, and to say that things are off to a good start would be a severe understatement. Written by the ever-talented Shawn Alff and as a project near and dear to Greenwood's heart, this grungy release takes us back to 1999 and the tumultuous world of urban street artists and skaters. At the center of the action is an uber-talented (and equally directionless) artist on the path to nowhere (Lucky Fate), who lives in a loft with a bunch of his aimless friends and who skateboards around L.A., adding his own brand of spray-painted artwork to the otherwise-bleak scenery along the way.
In this opening episode, we're introduced to Lucky, a potential love interest(?) who's returned from college (Maya Woulfe), and Lucky's estranged and worse-for-wear father (Tommy Pistol), who doesn't have any use for his son, particularly given their spotty history. Indeed, it's Tommy's emotional (and harsh) interaction with Lucky that serves as the primary plot driver in this opening sequence.
Overall, the scene is set masterfully here, with high-end cinematography, a punky musical score, and art direction that evokes the essence of the period perfectly. (There's even a quick shot of an old Kylie Ireland poster from back in the day, among other relevant allusions--books of CD-R's, a Discman, and so on.) Attention to detail is also paid to the development of the characters, who begin to take shape early on, as do their varied interpersonal relationships.
Sex-wise, Tommy can't wait to get his girlfriend, the luscious Vicki Chase, out of her jeans and her revealing, black top as soon as his son leaves his home. The pair pound it out in a fairly standard, though certainly steamy, boy/girl sequence on his bed, complete with multiple positions and Vicki fingering Pistol's pee-hole a bit. The action here--oral (both ways), spooning, cowgirl, reverse-cowgirl, etc.--is all hot, and the good times ultimately close out with a pop on Chase's tongue. The discrepancy between the two characters' looks--Tommy made up to be a rundown, ex-con and Vicki the sexy motorcycle babe--intentionally drives home a sort of "Beauty and the Beast" motif.
