Girlcore S2 E1: Rock You Like a Hurricane Review

The Bree Mills-directed feature "Rock You Like A Hurricane" could've easily been ripped from the "too good to be true" backstage stories that populate any VH1 "Behind the Music" episode. Or, it's an episode of 80's cartoon show Jem taking a turn for the erotic. Either way, the story of two all-female bands being stranded in a seedy nightclub and engaging in a fuck-off for musical supremacy plays so close to form that it bears watching. Forty-five minutes later, it's appropriate to watch the video for The Runaways' "Cherry Bomb" and The Slits' "I Heard It Through The Grapevine" and not imagine Cherie Currie and Ari Up engaged in a hardcore sixty-nine. It's just that good.

"Good girl" rockers Twisted Fister are led by Micki Jett (played by Charlotte Stokely). The rest of the group is filled out by Joan (Katrina Jade), Kim (Kira Noir), and Patti (Payton Preslee). Foremost, a band that recalls the previously mentioned Runaways (Joan Jett), as well as Sonic Youth (Kim Gordon), and Patti Smith deserves so much credit for paying attention to the small details. They're a group concerned less with "selling out" than playing great music. Not that ANY of this matters to the sex, but it's the attention that's paid to scripting and developing milquetoast afterschool TV-style drama that drives home the "80s babies making 80s content" vibe that makes Girlcore such a unique channel.

MegaLez is the "bad girl" rock band and is led by Rhonda Rotten (Lena Paul). She's joined by Lila (Karla Kush), Charlie (Chloe Cherry), and Darla (Giselle Palmer). They're the band that decides to take it to the stage after being told by the club's owner -- played by Steel Panther drummer Stix Zadinia -- that a hurricane will strand both bands at the club for the evening. Again, this is immaterial to any of the sex. But, the fact that there's the impression that porn stars are not porn stars, but musicians ostensibly about to fuck is an unexpected strength of the film. If you're a person just watching a 45-minute clip looking for a straight-up fuck-fest, steer away from Girlcore. If you're someone who may be attempting to engage a non-porn aficionado in watching some hot lesbian action, Girlcore gives you just enough tongue-in-cheek plot to make it not feel potentially disturbing for the non-pornophile.

The sex going metaphorically from zero to sixty in eight seconds is pretty wild. Katrina Jade is a star of the scene in full, and her "Daddy's Girl" tattoo that sits directly over her pussy undulating over Karla Kush's open mouth is exciting. Jade's tattooed body and bodacious physique give her a real sense of appearing to look like the kind of woman who hung out in this club that intends to have the feel of Los Angeles' infamous Rainbow Room. Especially her getting quickly to the dirty stuff, again, for the scripting and scene development, plays true to form. Lena Paul and Charlotte Stokely's interaction feels like a sex-fight. Paul's natural dominant streak is inherently apparent here, as the wantonness in her face and Stokely's natural "good girl" facial features and body language mix well.

However, the real show-stealer here occurs when Lena Paul and Katrina Jade finally enmesh. Paul's got a star drawn over her left eye as an ode to Kiss' Paul Stanley, and she's genuinely -- alongside Jade -- wearing that makeup for an important reason. Their chemistry together sizzles. In the vein of "rocker slut-fuck fantasy," nothing is stopping these two in this film. Stokely and Kush are excellent. Kush achieves a particularly violent orgasm midway through the feature that, if we had yet to see Paul and Jade's continuously escalating eroticism would be the ultimate moment of the scene. The pumping twin scissor-fuck that involves both Stokely and Kush and the previously mentioned duo of Paul and Jade is undoubtedly intense. But there's something extra-salacious in the seduction and pleasure of the latter that moreso than the plot where one band must reign supreme makes this exciting.
