The First Word: Having really enjoyed Femme 2, I decided to pick up the first Femme to see whether it was as good. Unfortunately, it doesn't have the magic that the sequel has. What's It About?: This is an all-sex, girl-girl video from the Vivid Raw label, featuring five unrelated, dialogue-free Sapphic scenes. The titled segments are: "Pony" -- Randi Rage, Felicia, and Katie Gold -- Even though this scene looks to be a pony-fetish scene with Randi dressed as a pony girl, Felicia wearing a riding helmet and PVC boots, and Katie in chains, it plays out as more of a conventional lesbian scene. I'm not a fan of scenes that are too formulaic (i.e. "first we eat pussy, then we move on to dildos, etc.") -- I prefer when the action has some variety. Still, there's something definitely erotic about seeing a daisy chain of girls eating each other out. Most of the rest of the scene is a toy fest: a double dildo, a jelly dildo, and a beaded anal dildo that Katie takes up her bum. The ending of the scene is either love it or hate it as the girls rub themselves to solo orgasms. "Tub" -- Monti and Terri Starr -- This scene starts out with the girls in a small, cave-like bathroom, watching each other while they masturbate. When the two small-breasted beauties come together, they tongue duel for a little while. For some reason, I really like the act where a double-headed dildo is inserted into one of the women while the other sucks on the other end. I know it's totally absurd since it serves no useful function other than to look erotic to someone watching, but I like it just the same. The bath full of oil is another thing that looks good, but from a practical standpoint, I can't imagine trying to clean up after that session! The potentially could have been a very good scene, but the chemistry just wasn't there -- they were going through the motions, but it seemed very "porno" to me despite the attempt to turn this into a slower, romantic scene. "Pets" -- Yvonne, Montana Gunn, and Felicia -- This scene starts out with two strikes against it right off the bat since both Yvonne and Montana have fake tits. It's a total turnoff to see girls with obviously fake breasts engaged in lesbian sex, probably because it's a reminder how artificial most girl-girl porn is. I mean, it's so much hotter when you think that the girls are really into each other, not doing it as a side job. The premise of this scene is that Montana and Felicia are both animals (complete with painted spots) and are released by redheaded Yvonne. While it starts out as a pretty conventional 3-way lesbian scene, it does venture off the normal path with a bit of rimming and lots of anal action, courtesy of buttplugs and a vibe. Other highlights include a very nice piledriver penetration shot and Yvonne filled by a monster-sized jet black dildo. "Dream" -- Inari Vachs, Monti, and Candy Hill -- This is a below average scene, which is really disappointing since I like Inari quite a bit. The idea is that Inari is asleep and dreams about ghosts Monti and Candy making love to her. Well, actually, it's mostly Candy and Inari fucking each other since Monti spends most of the scene masturbating separately. There's an abundance of toys in this scene (and in the entire video) -- I wonder if Doc Johnson paid to have so many toys as a product placement!). The high points of the scene are when Inari fucks Candy, first with a double dildo inserted into her own pussy and then doggystyle with a strap-on. Still, it just didn't click, especially Monti's mostly hands-off approach. "Dark" -- Charlie and Shelbee Myne -- The last scene is set in an elegant, dimly-lit bar area. Shelbee is still in her pre-surgery form here but not without her big-ass tattoo. Charlie, who's shaved bald, is one of those strangely-appealing girls that you probably wouldn't go out of your way to watch, but when she's in a scene, you're drawn to her. There's some decent oral to start, but I really don't like it when wads of spit are openly used as a lubricant -- it's just totally unromantic and gross. Then, guess what? The last half of the scene is all about dongs, vibes, and anal penetration. If that's your fetish, then you're probably loving life. If not, then you're probably questioning why you though you were getting such a bargain when you picked this title up on sale. What I liked: As I noted above, there are a few hot moments, mostly involving creative use of toys. I also like the teasing and kissing that starts the scenes but there's too little of that. What I didn't like: Too many toys!: I don't have a problem with the use of toys in the course of a girl-girl scene. I mean, I like a big dong in a pussy just as much as the next guy. But every scene in this video has a ton of different toys -- it almost seems like it's intentional that just about every shot has a different one. The effect is compounded with the clear separation between tongues or fingers and dongs and buttplugs. Again, nothing wrong with that, but it gets pretty tedious by the fifth scene. Where's the fun?: The atmosphere of Femme is flat and isolated. You don't sense a lot of chemistry or excitement and the action seems contrived more than it usually does. It's not awful (I've seen a lot of really fake girl-girl vids in my time) but you're not going to see this one and say "wow, what a real girl-girl vid -- they really seemed to enjoy themselves!" It's really another "this is what guys think lesbians do" video. I'm not saying that I'm looking for realism, but some genuine enthusiasm or light-hearted lesbianism (think Slumber Party) would have pulled this title out of the pack. DVD Extras: It's a budget title, so don't expect any personalized extras for this title. There are quite a bit of photos on this disc (67), but only 20 of them are from Femme, and those still are located in the menu that contains the random video clips. Speaking of which, Vivid has included 8 additional scenes, but those are, of course, random and of dubious quality and merit. Finally, there are trailers for other Vivid Raw titles to round out the package. It's pretty boring stuff, but quite a bit more than I would expect on this type of DVD. A/V Quality: It's a mixed bag: On one hand, the video is very sharp and clear, free of any glaring problems. However, the lighting is too dark and moody in sections. This contrasts completely compared to Femme 2, which was shot outdoors. The audio is tinny and has limited range, and is compounded by the sets, which appeared to be in an empty house. The music itself is far to synthesized for my taste -- I suppose it works at times, but when it doesn't, I wish they had not had music at all. The Last Word: I didn't care for the style of this video: it was too dimly-lit, inconsistent, and far too toy-oriented for my tastes. For the price, it's not a bad deal, and I know that it probably would be well-received by the toy girl-girl set. But since it was low on the fun and the "naturalness" of the lesbian act, I would point you toward Femme's sequel for a better girl-girl video.
