Escaladies (Digital Playground) (DVD + Blu-Ray Combo Pack) Review

Blu-Ray vs. DVD: As usual, the Blu-Ray disc is very similar to the DVD with a few minor changes. The menus have a slightly different style and don't identify the performers, but are still very effective and I really like the style of how they're done. As for the extras, the photo gallery is only available to view as a slide show and there's fourteen trailers instead of eight. The movie still looks fantastic, but with the added resolution the Blu-Ray offers it's just a little crisper.

Audio /Video Quality: As usual with Digital Playground, the technical aspects are every bit as good as what one expects from a mainstream release. The audio is clear and well balanced. The video is presented in anamorphic widescreen, very well lit, and clear with a steady hand on the camera.

The Movie: Escaladies starts the story of three sisters. Ariella is the oldest, who left years ago in search of sex and money. Ann Marie is the middle child, who now feels the burden of responsibility as she was left with Selena. Selena is now eighteen and longing to be on her own and out from under the overprotective Ann Marie. She's more than excited when Ariella gives her the offer to come visit her...

Escaladies is a good start to what looks like an interesting series, and it's cool to see Digital Playground go with something a little different than the rest by focusing this release in the Latino community. Ann Marie, Selena, and Ariella come off as nicely different personalities as the three sisters, and there's plenty going on between them as well as in the back story that we only get glimpses of. The biggest complaint I can see anybody having about Escaladies, and I'll admit to partially falling into this camp, is that there isn't a whole lot that happens in the over two hours the movie lasts. That said, there is plenty of time spent introducing the viewer to each of the sisters, as well as some pretty darn hot sex and nice glimpses of what might be yet to come. Selena does a great job in each of her scenes, as well as a decent job acting, and I especially loved the third scene with Ariella and Charley watching Selena take on Ramon. Ann Marie also does a fantastic job with Marco, and does every bit as good of a job acting in her role and giving hints of a very unhappy past. Ariella did a good job, especially with her acting, but sexually she never drew me in like pretty much everybody else in the cast. The other complaint I can see some having is that although Charley Chase is featured prominently on the back cover (in the upper left corner my eye went to her first), she only has a supporting role sexually and one isn't sure if she's a big enough character to even appear in the sequel. Escaladies has some very nice things going for it to set up this series, and although I can't say that it worked perfectly for me (mostly as I wasn't expecting this to be more than a single release) I can say that I'm looking forward to seeing where it's going to go.

The Extras: Trailers are included for eight other Digital Playground releases. The photo gallery can be viewed either one still at a time or as a slide show lasting a little over three minutes. There's also a behind the scenes featurette and contact information.

The behind the scenes featurette lasts about nine minutes. Ann Marie and Selena talk about playing sisters, as well as the downside that goes with it while also having a little fun. There's also a little fun with Vicki and Marco with Robby D. and Toni Ribas even getting in on the fun. Charley Chase shows up for a little tease and fun with Selena before Selena gives a few last words as well as one last flash. This is a nice little featurette. You get some nice fun on the set and eye candy while never getting too serious. This is a good little addition to the overall DVD.

Final Thoughts: Aim low or rent this one before you spend the big bucks. It has some great things going for it to set up the series, but I'm not sure how much replay value it's going to have.

Note to Digital Playground: It's cool that you're going into bigger stores with series like Escaladies and Cherry, but you might want to let viewers know when there's going to be a bigger picture so they don't expect things to be wrapped up in one release. Something like Escaladies 1: The Beginning (and I have no doubt that you could come up with something better than “The Begging”) would get this across much better to viewers in letting them know what they should expect.
