Dreams (Gai Studios) Review

First Word: I bought this one on an impulse last summer after reading a very enthusiastic review and then seeing the video at the store, plus I wanted to try out my DVD player.

The Story: As we see introductory shots of the cast, a man in accented English (probably the director) asks, "...How many times in your everyday life have you seen an incredible-looking guy that you just wanted right there, on the spot, only to just let him pass by...and all we are left with are dreams of what could have been?" This video contains five vignettes of situations where those dreams become reality.

Scene 1: All the scenes start out the same, showing an encounter between a couple guys. They part ways, then one is left to close his eyes and wonder about what might have been as we have a scene transition from blue-tinted "reality" to full-color "fantasy," complete with techno-beat sound track. In this scene, Damon West plays a business man (more like a college senior on a job interview, right down to the two-sizes-too-big suit) in a hotel. Julio Icente enters with room service, pours Damon some champagne, and asks, "Is there anything else I can do for you?" Never mind that this is not the kind of hotel that has room service. Damon dismisses Julio, downs the champagne as if it were water, then strips and lies on the bed. Now we have the dream (apparently a day dream as opposed to a sleeping dream...I think they really mean "fantasy," but I guess that title wasn't as catchy), where Damon has a different answer to Julio's question.

Damon is an Italian-looking guy who made his porn mark a few years back in a couple "solo jerk-off" photo sets. I'm glad someone convinced him to move from stills to action, because he is one hot fucker. He's good-looking with a mostly defined body (but with a little "starter" gut) that is a bit pale, which is a nice contrast to his black, bushy body hair (pubes, under arm and legs). His most distinctive feature is his uncut dick, which is quite wide and above average in length but has a head so flat it looks like it was smashed into a hard object. It doesn't look like the kind of thing you'd want to be penetrated with. Julio is, I suppose by his name here, Hispanic, though he doesn't have the mocha skin of many Hispanics. He sounds more like a "Julia" than a "Julio," but at least he is cute and has the best-looking ass of the video. He wears an auburn wig, which looks stupid, but I'm guessing the buzzcut he has sported in other videos did not fit in character here. Anyway, to the sex. Damon jumps up and starts kissing Julio, throws him onto the bed, then hurriedly undresses him. The way Damon tears off Julio's clothes gives the impression he is really hot for some action, and it is a good way to start this scene. Damon works Julio's modest cock to stiffness with some sucking and a lot of hand action, and we are allowed to hear all the sloppy action. Then Damon feeds his dick to Julio, who does a good job taking quite a bit of the square-ended dick. As he does throughout the scene, Damon shows he's in control by kneeling above Julio and face-fucking him as hard as Julio can take. Some 69 action leads to some tame ass play, with Damon spreading Julio's cheeks to reveal a shaved ass, and although Damon kisses the cheeks he never tongues very close to the hole. There's a jump cut to the anal action, which is shown in three positions: missionary on the bed, standing up doggy style, and back on the bed with Julio on his stomach. Both times on the bed Damon stands above Julio and fucks downward. This gives some of the best penetration shots I've seen. He also does a lot of withdrawing and re-inserting. Near the end Julio begs for it harder, but Damon never really fucks him as hard as I thought he should given his dominant character here (there's no pounding). Damon jerks off a very impressive load onto Julio's back, then he pulls up Julio so Julio can pump a couple shots out of his short but big-headed, uncut dick.

Likes/Dislikes: This scene was hot and the kind of scene I look for in porn. Although their roles are predictable (big dick tops, nice butt bottoms), Damon and Julio put a lot into their roles and you really feel how much the top dominates, from the undressing (glad to see it), throughout the oral, and continuing through the anal. I also liked the style in which the cumshots were filmed; they are shown in slow motion from two angles, but you hear the audio as if the action were at normal speed (all the cumshots in the video are shot like this). Overall, though, the directing was a mixed bag. While there was a unique framing of Damon's image in a wall mirror as seen between his legs when he fucks Julio, there was also an instance where someone in the production is briefly seen in the corner of the picture frame.

Scene 2: The setup for this scene is detention hall, where Clint Baxter and Roy Fischer are finishing up their school work. When Clint finishes he leaves, and Roy is left to ponder his "mighta been." Roy actually looks like a student here, with an undefined body, diamond stud in his left earlobe, and bleached ends in his spiky hair. He's not spectacular looking, but I liked him. Clint is a very dark brunet who's a bit older. He's done work in straight and other gay videos as Wade Mohawk. He talks with a stiff upper lip, as if he were doing an impression of Jimmy Cagney, and comes across as quite uninterested.

When Roy opens his eyes, he looks over to see Clint sitting naked at his desk. The desktop cleverly hides what gets Roy's attention, which we soon see is Clint's dick pointing to the ceiling. Roy gets to his knees and sucks Clint's thick dick, and soon they re-position as a small desk is no place to get a proper blowjob. Roy ditches his clothes so Clint can reciprocate on Roy's bigger dick (four non-European guys in this video so far, and it's nice to see not one of them is cut). Roy can see Clint doesn't care much for the taste of dick, so Roy goes back to sucking Clint in a couple more positions, including from behind. The whole time Roy is hard and really seems to enjoy what he's doing. I had seen photos of Roy sitting on Tony Alvarez's big dick, so I fully expected Roy to bottom here. But I guess the reward for staying hard is getting to top, so Roy does. First he fucks Clint doggy style over the desk and displays a really determined motion (though his butt is so sorry looking I was glad they focused more on a close-up of the penetration here). Then Clint lies on one of those folding banquet tables that is so flimsy you'd never sit on one never mind have sex on it. Roy fucks while holding Clint's legs in the wishbone position, and then I think someone reminded Clint he's getting paid here as he climbs on Roy and shows a little bit of life in some cowboy action (and a good view of Clint's shapely and hairy butt). They both jerk off loads onto Roy's belly.

Likes/Dislikes: When I was in school, I had lots of fantasies involving my classmates, but not one of them involved the classroom as a setting. And this scene shows why. Classroom furniture is just not comfortable for sex. At least, that's the reason I'm guessing Clint was not into this scene. The first scene was hot; this scene was not. It was quite a letdown. But I did like Roy Fischer and would watch him again, although I wish he'd work on that soft body of his.

Scene 3: Cameron Stone is stopped at an intersection in his parents' SUV when Matt Fuller walks in front of him. Cameron has more spikes and bleach in his hair than Roy had in the previous scene, and I actually thought he was kind of tough-looking in his box cover photo. But he's anything but here, and actually not as good-looking, probably because he has an unflattering profile and the bleach job is so badly done. Matt Fuller is probably the oldest of the cast, with a face and body that suggests 30 even if he's not. Normally I would prefer that, but he looks out of place in this video, and there's nothing impressive about his looks, body, or voice, though he does have a thick dick. In this scene Cameron opens his eyes to find the SUV parked in a garage and Matt sitting naked in the passenger's seat. He of course goes to town on Matt's dick, then Matt stands up through the sunroof so Cameron can get a little more access. There's a closeup from behind Matt that shows how much his dick stretches Cameron's lips. Then Cameron moves to the back seat, where he lies on his back so Matt can stand outside and fuck Cameron's mouth. This is not an easy position for Cameron, but he gives it the ol' college try. Jump cut to the anal action, where Cameron has turned around so Matt can fuck him doggy style. We see some shots from inside the vehicle and below the action (how did they get the camera in there?) that shows Cameron's hard dick as he gets plugged. We actually hear some flesh-slapping here. Then Matt lies on his back so Cameron can climb aboard. Matt continues to do most of the thrusting (probably because Cameron is busy keeping his head from banging the ceiling), which is action I like to see. Matt jerks off a messy load, then Cameron lets loose the longest continuous stream of an ejaculation I have ever seen--it almost looks like pissing!

Likes/Dislikes: Here's another situation I didn't understand. We've all had to use the car for some quick action, but usually because it was not convenient to entertain at home. But if you can do it in the garage, why not go into the house where it's more comfortable? Or at least fold down the back seat and go where there's more room. And if this were my dream I'd want more interaction from the other guy--at least have him suck a little bit. Again, the action in this scene fails to live up to the first, but now the models are getting less attractive with each scene.

Scene 4: Mason Tyler is in the personal hygiene section of the grocery store when he notices a couple of guys cruising him. Mason, the cute guy on the box cover, is emminently cruisable. The other guys, however, are not. Mason goes home, strips down, and hops on his bed to dream about a 3-way with the two guys he just saw, Walter Lee and Don London. Walter, the other guy on the cover, his quite average-looking. Don could be cast in a role for a Munsters reunion and they wouldn't need to give him an extension for his forehead. Man, does he look brutal. Mason's dream takes place in a plain, white-tiled room with a full-length mirror. The three stand together naked as the camera looks up from below, and we soon see why Don London is in this flick. Although he's almost a head taller than the other two, his dick hangs much lower than the others' it's that long. And thick. And ugly like him. Mason and Lee take to their knees to suck it before they lie down for a lengthy circle-chain suck in which no one seems to get hard. Then Mason sucks the others before standing against the wall and winking his butt cheeks as if to say, "bring it here, guys." They both oblige him in a standing doggy fuck before he gets on his back for some missionary from each. The action is pretty basic. Mason jerks off while getting fingered by Don, and Walter sends four streaks of jizz diagonally across Mason's hairy chest. Don kneels between Mason's legs to finish the scene, and we get a good look at his monster dick with a foreskin so sheer it looks like he's rubbing nylon on his dick head. Back to reality, where Mason sits up, looks into the camera, and asks, "Man, why can't real life be like that?" Actually, Mason, when I was your age it was, only it was the gym, not the supermarket, and they were both cute.

Likes/Dislikes: I liked Mason Tyler. He has a nice smile, and it's always a plus to see guys not shave their chest hair. I wish he had given a better performance, but given his partners here I can understand why he wasn't into it. Sure, he has a small dick, but I'll take good looks and small dick over ugly looks and huge dick any day. One different thing about this scene was that the changes in action were marked by showing Mason lying on his bed as he's dreaming this scene. Now, whether he was dreaming or fantasizing, wouldn't you expect him to be hard?

Scene 5: Jarred Kentley is a worker at a resort, washing dishes at an outdoor cafe as tourists Jamie Blade and Jesse James look at maps. Jarred is probably the prettiest guy in the video, a part-Anglo, part-Black, hairless, skinny dude with eyebrows so well manicured I bet he does drag. He looks hot in a wifebeater and jeans. Jamie and Jesse are less attractive but interesting-looking in their own way. Jamie has curly, reddish hair and very pale skin, while Jesse has a scruffy look with sideburns, a scraggly goatee and a few small tattoos. Although this video is billed as a "twink" video, this is the only scene where I'd say the term applied to all the participants.

After they check each other out, Jarred lies down on a chaise lounge and closes his eyes. He "awakes" to find Jarred and Jamie standing on each side of him, erections standing straight out. He grabs each dick and alternates sucking them, demonstrating a more-than-adequate technique. At one point he touches them tip-to-tip, as if he were making himself a foot-long. At some point his dick makes its way out of his pants, and we see that not only does he have the prettiest face in the video, he has the prettiest dick, too--thick, about 7 inches, uncut, and nice curve. Jamie and Jesse get on their knees and sample Jarred's dick, passing it between them and occasionally sucking him simultaneously. When they get up, we see that they are both still hard, which was nice to see after so much soft wood in the previous scenes. They perform a couple suck-and-rim chains during which Jarred's round butt is slowly revealed in a teasing way. Then it's up the stairs and inside for the anal action, where most of the scene focuses on a fuck train with Jarred boning Jamie while taking on Jesse. The first part of this is shot with them standing up, and the difficulties of coordinating their motion is pretty apparent. Probably too much time is spent on close-up shots from underneath. Then they get on the floor and lie on their sides, propping themselves against the couch. This position is much better as we get an excellent view of Jarred controlling the action. At times it looks like he's sliding along a pole that attaches Jesse's dick to Jamie's ass. Then they separate into one-on-one's, the purpose of which is to produce the cumshots. Jamie lies back on the couch and Jarred kneels between his legs, fucking the cum out of Jamie. Actually, Jamie tries to jerk off to the point he can produce a "no-hands" shot, but he appears only to deprive himself of a good orgasm. Then Jarred climbs aboard Jesse, seated on the floor, and jerks out his load before he dismounts so Jesse can do the same. Jesse and Jamie hold hands nearly the entire time after the 3-way separates, as if they were really boyfriends or something.

Like/Dislikes: This scene was almost as good as the first and certainly was much better than the previous 3-way. It was nice to see, with one notable exception, that the guys were ready and definitely having fun. Jarred was especially fun to watch, though I would have preferred to see his eyes open a little more. There were a couple reminders of what I would call a less-than-adequate attention to detail in the production of this video. There is one sequence during the standing fuck train where the trailing fucker (Jesse) pulls too far back and we see that his dick is just hanging there. Now I'm not naive to think penetration is never simulated in porn, but come on, at least edit out those shots that make it obvious the sex is simulated. And when Jarred is fucking Jamie we notice both visually and audibly that an overhead light gets switched on. Who edited this thing?

Audio/Visual: The sound track was actually good as far as the choice of music. Only a couple scenes really let us hear the sounds of sex, but I couldn't tell whether the lack of noise in the rest of the video was an audio problem or just very quiet guys. The picture came through clear, and I liked the transition from the "dark" reality to the full-color dream. Shot selection was very good, especially the close-ups, even if in some cases the close-ups were held a bit too long. And the slow-motion and repetitive cumshots were definitely a strong point of the video (and last I checked, some of them were available on the studio's website).

DVD Features: This was the first DVD issued by this company, so I'm hoping that they'll get better in this department. There is one chapter selection per scene, and it doesn't even start at the beginning of the scene. The photo gallery of the action was more than I've seen in other DVDs, though it always raises questions when you show action shots that don't correspond with the video. For example, why did the promo pics of scene 5 show the anal action taking place outside and show Jamie topping? I would have preferred to see the fucking outdoors in the video. The photo galleries of the models absolutely sucked. Whenever the forward/backward buttons were on diagonal ends of the screen, I could not select the forward button and therefore could not see two-thirds of the models. Then there are the previews. The same four titles scroll by the screen, making me wonder whether I'd ever see any. Finally we get a mish-mash of unidentified scenes showing some of the director's now-familiar favorite action (lots of chains). The thing that struck me was that the preview screen implied the four videos were from GAI Studios, but they are actually Pacific Sun videos directed by di Masolo. The previews end with Mason Tyler giving a no-hands cumshot as he's getting fucked, and I felt short-changed since he couldn't muster anything as interesting in this video.

Bottom Line: At the beginning of the video, the narrator tells us about our dreams and fantasies involving a "hot, young stud." I found this term rather ironic as not one object of anyone's dreams in this video comes close to my definition of a hot, young stud. And if you're going to take some average-looking guys and put them through recipe sex (suck, fuck, each guy jerks himself off), then damn, the action better be hot. Unfortunately, the action at the beginning and the end does not make up for the lukewarm middle, and the annoying production mistakes just reinforce the negative. I can only hope the subsequent releases from this studio improve. I liked enough here to make me interested in seeing another GAI video, but it will take a lot of convincing to make me want to own one.
