The Movie

The Diary is essentially an all-sex gay hardcore film from writer and director Toby Ross. The Diary has a flimsy plot made to tie several sex scenes together and make the film resemble a feature film. The Diary has Jerry Stevens (Jake Stryker), who is missing his love Cliff (Richard Senix). He writes in his diary about his feelings, and his past loves and reminisces about each love. The viewer sees Jerry's reminiscing reenacted on the screen.

The Diary comes across as a collection of unconnected sex scenes that were made for other projects that Toby Ross decided to tie together into one film as an attempt to salvage the footage. Toby Ross has said that the scene with Blake Dawson and George Conover, which really stands out from the other scenes, was shot much later than the other scenes were to lengthen out the film.

However, that isn't the only scene to stand out as problematic. The office scene with Chevy Williams and Terry Connors, who plays Greg, can't decide on one of the characters names. In his diary, Jerry refers to Chevy's character as Jerry; however, Greg refers to Chevy's character as Robert.

Honestly, most of the narratives for the sex scenes don't really fit in with the diary theme as it is presented in the film. Viewers who like Toby Ross' twink sex scenes will likely enjoy watching the sex scenes; however, as a feature, The Diary is really a loss.

The Edition

The edition of The Diary screened is the streaming-only edition available on TobyRoss.com. BDF (Big Dik Factory) has done an acceptable job with their streaming-only edition of The Diary. The Diary was shot on 16mm film, and BDF has used a video source for this release. The Diary is presented in the Academy aspect ratio of 1.33:1 pillarboxed to 1.78:1. The image is murky with artifacts present. The colors in the film are washed out. The picture is watchable. There is a TobyRoss.com bug in the bottom right-hand corner of the screen.

The Diary is presented with an English monaural audio track. The audio is only presented for the left channel for some reason. The dialog in the film is clear and easy to understand; however, the sound could use improvement.

The only extra that Toby Ross and BDF have included for their streaming-only release of The Diary is a making-of piece. “The Making of The Diary With Toby Ross” is an 18-minute featurette with Toby Ross reflecting on the making of The Diary and his part in the making of Boys of L.A. (California Boys/L.A. Boys).

Final Thoughts

The Diary is essentially an all-sex gay hardcore film that was given some connective material to make the movie a feature. If you are a fan of Toby Ross' sex scenes featuring what would be considered to be twinks today, you will enjoy The Diary. However, if you are looking for more substance than just sex scenes, The Diary will be disappointing. Toby Ross and BDF (Big Dik Factory) have done an acceptable job with their streaming-only edition of The Diary on TobyRoss.com with poor video quality and acceptable audio quality.
