Initial Expectations: I enjoyed both A Witch’s Tail and A Wolf’s Tail, which seem to set this one up very nicely. I’m hoping for a big finish!

Initial Reaction: Although it has a couple minor flaws, it’s one of the best couples features to come along in a long time.

Audio /Video Quality: The audio is very clear and well balanced. The video is almost as good, and is very clear. There are a few shadows throughout the feature, but they normally fit the scenes they’re in and give them a little more of a romantic feel.

Music: Unlike most pornos, the music comes and goes throughout the scenes and the movie itself. It gives it a little more of a feel like a mainstream movie, and fits almost every scene it’s in. It’s balanced very well with the rest of the audio, and helps to enhance the scenes rather than just adding a little rhythm to them.

False Advertising: The cover states that there are 8 bonus scenes when I can only find three. Also missing is Wolves, the special on Simon Wolf and the Simon Wolf Compound. The Hot Shot feature, which allows you to jump directly to the pop shot, also appears to be missing. In the past you could hit the enter key to jump directly to the pop, but here there’s no hot shot icon to let you know about it. Thanks to the chapter breakdown you can easily scan ahead to the pop, but it’s not the same thing. Due to not having all it’s advertised to have, I’ve deducted a half point from both the extras and the overall rating it would have gotten if they had been included.

Menus: The menus are very well done and have some excellent animation leading into the main menu and between the menus. The chapter menu lets you choose a scene based on the scene number and a small clip of the scene. After selecting the chapter, you can also select a position or act to go to in that scene.

The Feature: Through A Witch’s Tail and A Wolf’s Tail Jennifer (Asia Carrera) was enlightened about the powers she possessed. She knows deep inside her that she has great power and that the wolf is her protector and spiritual guide, but she still doesn’t want to completely accept or believe it. Although James (George Kaplan) has tried to protect her and shield her from the dangers which may come her way, a powerful evil being (Steven St. Croix) has his sights set on her, knowing that Jennifer doesn’t believe fully in her powers. It’s up to James and Jennifer’s sleazy agent (Joel Lawrence) to make Jennifer fully realize her power and stop their adversary.

Dale DaBone starts things off by saving damsel in distress Ava Vincent in the old west as part of Asia Carrera’s latest novel. She starts to thank Dale by sucking his cock sensually in front of a wood stove, stroking it as she sucks and giving him plenty of eye contact. A Devil’s Tail wraps up The Tails Trilogy pretty well. The acting and sex is both superb. Asia, Joel, and George Kaplan all do a great job in their roles, but Steven St. Croix steals almost every scene he’s in. He has the charm to carry the role, while still having a hint of evil about him. The storyline flows nicely through most of the feature, but feels a little rushed towards the end. In a way it feels like it was striving to be a little more like the standard porno while trying to fit in a bigger story. It succeeds pretty well, but there are times when things happen suddenly and feel forced, especially near the end. It’s still better than most porn stories, but in the end left me still wanting a little more, feeling like the story wasn’t completed. The sex, however, never left me unfulfilled. I was expecting a couple of the scenes to be a little different than they were due to who was in them, but each and every scene was excellent in almost every way. A Devil’s Tail, although not perfect, is pretty close and one of the best couples features to come along in a long time.

Extras: There aren’t any extras on the main DVD, but a second DVD is devoted completely to extras. The DVD is so packed with extras that it takes four screens to present them all. They aren’t crammed onto each screen, so it would have been possible to reduce the number of screens, but this makes it look a lot nicer.

Director’s cuts are included for the final two scenes of the movie. The new cut of the group scene between Kristi Myst, Nikita Denise, Catalina, and Chris Cannon now lasts about twelve minutes rather than nineteen and the final scene between Asia Carrera and Joel Lawrence lasts almost ten minutes rather than the original thirteen. Although there’s supposedly new footage for both scenes, I never noticed anything new or noteworthy in either of the newly cut scenes. The group scene feels very cut while the Asia scene doesn’t really feel any different.

The blooper reel lasts about fourteen minutes. It’s a lot of fun and full of funny stuff. There’s plenty of the standard flubbed lines as well as some of the cast trying to mess up others. There’s also an entire section that’s dedicated to the cameras falling and other cameramen mistakes that are sure to give you a perspective of the stars that you’ve never seen unless you’ve watched porn while rolling down a staircase. There’s also some of the things that just go wrong on the set as well as a gallery of faces that seems to describe just about every emotion one could have on a set. Finally, it closes with The End, namely Ava Vincent’s end, which is one of the best around. It’s a great set of bloopers that makes a great extra.

The behind the scenes featurette lasts a little over twenty five minutes. Bud Lee introduces things very well while introducing all of the cast. Almost every star gives a short interview in which they talk about what happens in their scene. After the interviews you get to see a few clips of the movie cut with some behind the scenes footage. It gives you a different view of the scene that allows you to see and hear some of the crew that’s there to make the movie magic happen. There’s also a little bit of footage on working with the wolves and Asia and Bud’s feelings on the wolves. It’s a nice behind the scenes that does add a little to the overall package.

The first interview is a ten minute interview with Asia Carrera and Bud Lee. They talk about being involved with a trilogy and working with recurring characters and the talent associated with them. They also talk about working with the wolves as well as Simon Wolf and what they have planned together in the future. Unfortunately the interviews look like they were done at two different times, so you don’t get to see any of the interaction between them. It’s a nice interview, but I think the interaction between Asia and Bud would have really brought out some great things.

Biographies are included for Nicole Sheridan, Ava Vincent, Catalina, Bud Lee, Nikita Denise, Asia Carrera, and Kristi Myst. Rather than the standard bio that only gives a little personal information and a few stills, if you’re lucky, the bios here are done as interviews that range from about four and a half minutes with Kristi Myst all the way up to thirteen minutes with Bud Lee. Each person talks about how they got into the business, their first scene, and what they hope to do after porn. Most of them also talk about how they took their stage name, their favorite people to work with and positions to work in, and their hobbies. It’s a great way to handle the interviews because you get to see each star’s personality rather than just reading about them.

Three bonus scenes are also included (the cover states eight but I could only find these three). The first is a fourteen minute scene that comes from X-Girls with Shay Sweet and Silvia Saint. Shay Sweet and Silvia Saint appear to have been tied up in a basement and get loose to let loose. Although I’m turned into a drooling fool every time I see so much as a picture of Silvia, I’m normally not too impressed with Shay Sweet. I can’t say that here because she looks great. There’s also a trailer for The Tails Trilogy as an entirety. It’s an odd trailer as it’s silent. It does a good job of showing the features and making them look interesting, but without the sound it seems to lose quite a bit.

The sex reel lasts about ten and a half minutes and mixes together scenes from The 69th Sense, Carribean Undercover, Devoured, KSEX 2, The Quick & The Hard, A Slave to Fashion , and Taboo of Tarot in a widescreen format. It gives a nice feel of several of the movies, but none of them are labeled so you never know which clip you’re watching. If you’re just in the mood for a quick smattering of scenes, it’s a great featurette to check out.

Finally, there’s a few words from Bud Lee, which is basically a twelve minute interview with Bud asking all the questions. Bud talks about how things went on the shoot, directing with stars of the feature both dramatically and sexually, and working with the wolf. Bud also talks about working with Simon Wolf and some of the future projects they’re doing together such as Magic and the series Blue Angel, both of which sound extremely interesting. Finally Bud talks about the Simon Wolf Compound, a project Simon has developed to care for wolves so that they can live as close to a natural life as possible. It’s a great interview that adds quite a bit to the feature.

Overall: Currently, A Devil’s Tail isn’t available on line, but it will probably be offered online for between $17 and $25. Even at the high end this is a heck of a buy. Although the movie has a couple minor flaws , the story is very good. It’s also excellent sexually and technically and has equally great extras.

Note to Adam & Eve / Simon Wolf Productions: Please watch what you put on your covers so they accurately represent what’s on the DVD. You would have received a higher rating if everything advertised was included. Also, as I mentioned last time, please include your alternate scenes on the same DVD as the main feature with a seamless branching option to let the viewer watch a director’s cut of the feature as your competition has done on features such as Cap’n Mongo’s Porno Playhouse. Even without the seamless branching option, it’s nice to be able to compare the two versions of the scene without having to switch DVDs each time. As is, this is still a great set that should wake up a lot of people.

NOTE: A few days after submitting this review I was passed on a DVD from one of the head people at Simon Wolf Productions. He wanted to make sure that the blame for the cover mistakes rested solely on him rather than anybody at Adam & Eve, since he’s the one that approved it. Even in the porn industry it seems hard to find people willing to step up and take their spankings when they screw up, so I’m impressed with this. It doesn’t change the fact that there are some very misleading things on the cover, but it’s great to see somebody step up to take responsibility for it rather than just hiding from it. It’s another sign that the people at Simon Wolf Productions really care about what they’re doing and what to try and do things right.
