Review:
A fun-filled jaunt out into the desert goes horribly wrong for two young lesbians, Casey Calvert and Charlotte Sartre, when their car's tires are unknowingly sabotaged near an abandoned mining town. Of course, curiosity gets the best of them, as they head out into the dilapidated camp, and it isn't long before they're both captured and tortured--first Sartre, then Calvert--by a masked, flannel-clad madman. Such is the case in "Derelict", a very good, albeit extraordinarily creepy, 2019 release from Kink and director The Pope. As the women's torment progresses, both find themselves tied up, chained, dragged around the area (including being taken into the mine shafts), etc. by The Pope--who plays the disturbed psycho--sometimes together and sometimes separated. Along the way, they suffer all manner of indignity and abuse, as they're fingered (with a gloved hand), manipulated, spanked, caned, zapped, vibrated, whipped, and so on. The location plays into the proceedings quite well, offering up just the type of dark and gritty environment that's perfect for such a horrific, carnal offering. Likewise, the lighting and cinematic style capture the film's harsh, hopeless tone, as well, augmenting the already fear-inspiring visuals. While the action itself isn't overly intense or brutal, the mental and emotional components that it conveys certainly are, which is a testament to both the director's and the participants' abilities alike. A bit of the back-story for The Pope's character is also interspersed as flashbacks in the form of clips, adding an extra layer of dimensionality to him, as well, and an early, pre-capture, girl-on-girl sequence between Charlotte and Casey shouldn't go unmentioned, either. What ultimately results is a well-rounded, darkly erotic, S & M drenched offering that is strong enough on the plot and in its content to appeal not only to its targeted, niche community, but also to a broader, more mainstream one. As such, fans of horror films, the decrepit and abandoned, The Pope, either of the actresses, and/or who are simply looking for something unique (and disturbing) should check this one out. It's definitely worthy...and it's definitely different than standard, X-rated fare.
