Creative Positions for Lovers Review

Initial Expectations: I’m hoping for a little more advanced feature. There’s not a lot that can be done for extras, so I’m not expecting much there.

Initial Reaction: It’s extremely basic and even more dry.

Audio /Video Quality: The video has just enough grain to be noticed. The audio is very clear.

Music: Much of the video has very soft, extremely relaxing music in the background.

Disc Problems: There’s no time code, which I think is a must on any DVD.

Review: WARNING: The following product may cause drowsiness. Do not consume alcoholic beverages while watching this product (trust me). Do not attempt to operate heavy equipment while, or after, watching this product. This is the minor part. Here comes the dangerous part. WARNING: Watching the product may make you think of your parents having sex. Okay, hopefully I haven’t lost too many people there.

Like Better Sex Video Series Volume 1: Better Sexual Techniques , the feature is very clinical (translation: dry) and uses real people (translation: they look like real people and some appear to be pushing, or have left behind 50). This isn’t all a bad thing. If you have real problems talking about sex or dealing with things like trying new positions, it’s very comforting. You don’t feel like you’re competing with people like Jenna Jameson and Mark Davis. It also helps that everybody in the video, with the exception of a couple of the experts, look like they’re having fun. By being so clinical, it’s handled in a completely non-threatening way. On the negative side, it’s almost too clinical. It isn’t handled like people speak or think about sex. It’s male superior position rather than missionary position and rear entry rather than doggie style.

Creative Positions for Lovers covers most of the basic positions as well as locations and aids. Male superior (missionary) and some of it’s variations, female superior (cowgirl and reverse cowgirl), sitting positions, rear entry positions (doggie, or as Dr. Banner refers to it, primal, since doggie is insulting) and oral sex positions (69s). It also covers creative locations, such as the kitchen, dining room, shower, and bathroom as well as sex toys (such as the Dumblonde approved Love Swing).

In between each subject, there’s interviews with people on the street. They talk about the subject in very general terms and their experiences with it. None of it is at all graphic and is actually very vague. It’s very supportive and reassuring for anybody having problems dealing with the subject matter. I think it would have been a little better if the people on the street would have suggested a position or two to lead into the section rather than “Yeah we do that. We like it.”. Yes, I’m simplifying it a little, but not much.

Creative Positions for Lovers does have a few problems. One, as I stated earlier, is that it is extremely dry. Dry can be livable. In this case, all of the positions covered were extremely basic. There was very little creative about them. Roughly a third of the feature was devoted to male superior (missionary), female superior (cowgirl and reverse cowgirl), and rear entry (doggie style). This seems a little too basic to me as I think everybody knows about these positions. Yes, they probably should be covered, but they could have been covered in half the time or a few variations could have been mentioned. When covering the missionary position, the only variations were where the woman’s legs are. That’s a fine variation, but how about a little more creativity? How about the guy facing the opposite direction? It’s not a threatening position and it’s not something everybody thinks of. As it is, the subject matter combined with the dryness and extremely relaxing music put Mrs. astro to sleep within fifteen minutes of us starting to watch it. I even almost fell asleep several times. It wasn’t late and neither of us had a rough day either.

This isn’t to say that Creative Positions For Lovers is a complete waste of time. There’s a lot of good messages in it. New positions are great, but if it doesn’t benefit both partners, it isn’t that good. Also, comfortable is best. Sex isn’t fun if you think you might have to be put in traction afterwards. Okay, maybe it is sometimes, but that’s not everybody. There are also many tips for communicating how you want to change things around with your partner. Finally, one of the most important messages was to force yourself to do it in places other than your bed. Sex is something that should be enjoyed for a lifetime. If it’s only done in one place or one way, it’s eventually going to get boring. When it gets boring, it’s not going to be fun.

Extras: Chapters and sexual health info. The chapters are listed according to position, which is really nice. The sexual health info contains information about the Sinclair Intimacy Institute, a definition of sexual health, the history of explicit sexual health films, testimonials from sexual health professionals, and key points from consumer & customer research as well as professional research. For an educational feature, this seems like a great job with extras.

Raincoat Factor: Very low unless you thought Recessi-Annie was a sex toy in health class.

Overall: Currently, Creative Positions For Lovers can be found online for between $20 and $23. Unless you have extreme problems in communication and only know one or two positions, this is probably going to be too basic for you. If, however, this does describe you, it’s probably worth getting if you want to spice things up a little.

Note to Adam & Eve: This isn’t too bad for those who have a lot of problems discussing sex. For everybody else, it seems too basic. I hope to see a little more advanced educational DVDs in the future as I think they’ll go over a lot better.
