Audio/visual quality: The cinematography is generally excellent. All scenes but one (Franco Corelli's) are shot on film. They're not as well preserved as some of Colt's work—the print isn't clean in Ed Horst's scene, for example, and the colors are very faded in Bob Duffy's scene. Still, these flaws didn't impede my enjoyment. The audio consists of a variety of music with some sound effects. A good portion of the soundtrack has a Western flavor; the remainder is more generic.

Highlights:

1. The Bonus Mike Davis, Lil' Shadow, and Gunther Keller partner up in a vintage loop. Two cowboys are kissing at the stables when the third rides in with their pay. The uncut boss and a ranch hand keep their boots on for 69 in the hay. Both hands cum on the boss' butt, and then one jerks him off. The scene ends with a wry twist. Time: 13:18. Rating: 4.5 stars.

2. Relief Franco Corelli does shirtless pull-ups at a water tower. He wanks on a denim patchwork quilt in a tent and cleans up in an outdoor shower. He's a fan favorite, and his sexual performance is acceptable. But this scene's phony "cowboy" pretensions disappointed me. The video style is also noticeably different, with extreme close-ups and weird overhead angles (where I feel like I'm floating in an out-of-body experience). Time: 14:18. Rating: 3 stars.

3. Hayseed Ed Horst puts his wheelbarrow down and pops some chewin' tobacco in his mouth. He humps the floor of an old copper bathtub and shoots a full load. I love Ed's facial expressions, the hat that he wears, and the fact that he washes away some actual grime in the bath. Time: 10:16. Rating: 5 stars.

4. Oil Spill Bob Duffy feeds his horses and oils his riding gear. He gets worked up over all that rubbing and gyrates his hips appealingly during the masturbation. Bob might be the most attractive man on this disc; his assets include a youthful lean physique, excellent ab definition, and a light sprinkling of blond body hair. Time: 16:50. Rating: 4.5 stars.

5. Strip Along Cowboy Terry Bunz turns in another faux "cowboy" performance, but unlike Franco's scene, Terry's is intentionally amusing. He tosses his hat toward the camera while stripping in the pink light of a campy Western-themed set. He self-stimulates to a climax (shown both in slo-mo and at regular speed) and licks his fingers clean. God help me, but I found Terry's dance rather hot. I'm a sucker for guys who give lots of eye contact. Time: 12:38. Rating: 4 stars.

6. A Western Shrine Ward Austin, the cover model, plays dress-up while awaiting a job interview at an estate. He cums after some self-absorbed posing practice. I liked the voyeuristic views through barred windows, but this loop didn't do much for me. I've been spoiled by Erron's superior mirror scene in The Best of Colt 7 & 8. Time: 12:02. Rating: 3 stars.

7. The Farmhand's Workout Fred Slinger decides he'd rather pump iron than paint. His short shorts can't quite corral his big softy. He rinses himself with bottled water and scatters guy goo every which way. Time: 13:00. Rating: 3 stars.

Thumbs up: Cowboys. I like 'em. My warped childhood probably included too many spaghetti westerns. Anyhow, for those of us who like them, there are nine cowboys in this collection. Or at least, there are nine men costumed, more or less, like archetypical cowboys. Which is a good start.

Thumbs down: It's a stretch to refer to some of the locations as "cowboy country." Scenes one, three, and four are reasonably realistic and include convincing ranches and/or stables. The remainder are hokey. This volume falls short on realism, and realism is usually what I love best.

Themes: Masturbation (primary theme), threeway (just one scene, which includes blowjobs, a handjob, and kissing), undressing, cumeating, showering and bathing, weightlifting, cock rings, outdoor settings, bodybuilder physiques, athletic physiques, body hair (and, of course, cowboys!).

Condom use: None (n/a).

Juice-o-meter: High for the realistic scenes and the striptease. Medium-low for the rest.

Final analysis: Cowboy Country features a variety of guys getting off in Western gear. Only half of the performances play authentically to a cowboy fetish. Still, this DVD is alright as a sampler. I would've rated it a little higher if I didn't also feel cheated by the shorter-than-advertised running time.
